Gender: 'Gender is in Everything' as Generation Functions and Operators
BY NICOLE LAU
The seventh and final Hermetic Principle, from The Kybalion:
"Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles; Gender manifests on all planes."
This is the most misunderstood Hermetic Principle. It's NOT about biological sex or social gender. It's about generative principles—the mathematical necessity of complementary operations for creation.
In this article, I'll prove that the Hermetic Principle of Gender is mathematically equivalent to generation functions, creation/annihilation operators, and the dialectical process of synthesis.
Not metaphorically. Exactly.
What "Gender" Actually Means in Hermetic Philosophy
First, let's clarify what the Hermeticists meant by "Gender":
NOT biological sex
NOT social gender roles
NOT male/female humans
BUT:
• Active vs. Passive principles
• Giving vs. Receiving
• Projecting vs. Receptive
• Yang vs. Yin
• Positive vs. Negative (in electrical sense)
• Creation vs. Annihilation
The Hermetic "Masculine" = Active, generative, projecting principle
The Hermetic "Feminine" = Receptive, nurturing, gestating principle
Key insight: Generation requires BOTH.
The Mathematical Translation: Creation and Annihilation Operators
Hermetic Version:
"Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles."
Mathematical Version:
In quantum field theory, every system has two complementary operators:
Creation operator: â†
Annihilation operator: â
Commutation relation:
[â, â†] = â↠- â†â = 1
These operators act on quantum states:
â†|n⟩ = √(n+1)|n+1⟩ (creates a particle)
â|n⟩ = √n|n-1⟩ (destroys a particle)
Every quantum field has both. You can't have creation without annihilation, or vice versa. They're complementary—like Hermetic "Gender."
Generation Functions: Encoding Sequences
A generating function encodes a sequence in a power series:
G(x) = Σ(n=0 to ∞) aₙxⁿ
Where {aₙ} is the sequence being generated.
Example: Fibonacci sequence
Generating function:
G(x) = x / (1 - x - x²)
Expanding this generates: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ...
The function (masculine/active) generates the sequence (feminine/receptive manifestation).
This is "Gender" in mathematical form: a generative rule + receptive substrate → manifestation.
Dialectical Synthesis: Thesis + Antithesis → Synthesis
Hegel's dialectic is a generative process:
Thesis (masculine/active principle)
Antithesis (feminine/receptive principle)
Synthesis (generated offspring)
Mathematical formulation:
S = f(T, A)
Where:
• T = thesis
• A = antithesis
• f = synthesis function
• S = synthesis (new creation)
Generation requires two complementary inputs. This is the Hermetic Gender principle.
Examples of Generative Complementarity
Example 1: Electricity
Electric current requires:
• Positive terminal (masculine/active/source)
• Negative terminal (feminine/receptive/sink)
• Together → Current flows (generation of work)
You can't have current with only positive or only negative. You need both poles.
Example 2: Thermodynamics
Heat engine requires:
• Hot reservoir (masculine/active/source)
• Cold reservoir (feminine/receptive/sink)
• Together → Work is generated
Carnot efficiency:
η = 1 - T_cold/T_hot
Work generation requires temperature difference—two complementary states.
Example 3: Chemistry
Chemical reaction requires:
• Reactants (masculine/active/giving electrons)
• Products (feminine/receptive/receiving electrons)
• Together → New compounds generated
Oxidation-reduction (redox) reactions explicitly involve electron donor (masculine) and electron acceptor (feminine).
Example 4: Biology
Sexual reproduction requires:
• Sperm (masculine/active/mobile)
• Egg (feminine/receptive/stationary)
• Together → Offspring generated
This is the biological manifestation of the Hermetic principle. But the principle is more general—it applies to ALL generative processes, not just biological sex.
Example 5: Computation
Computation requires:
• Input (masculine/active/data)
• Function (feminine/receptive/processing)
• Together → Output generated
Or alternatively:
• Algorithm (masculine/active/rules)
• Data structure (feminine/receptive/substrate)
• Together → Result generated
Yin-Yang: The Perfect Symbol
The Taoist yin-yang symbol encodes the Gender principle:
Yang (masculine principle):
• Active, bright, hot, hard, projecting
• Contains seed of yin (black dot in white)
Yin (feminine principle):
• Receptive, dark, cool, soft, receiving
• Contains seed of yang (white dot in black)
Key insights:
1. Neither exists without the other
2. Each contains the seed of its opposite
3. Together they form the Tao (complete whole)
4. They're in constant dynamic balance
This is the Hermetic Gender principle visualized: complementary generative forces in dynamic equilibrium.
L-Systems: Generation from Simple Rules
Lindenmayer systems (L-systems) generate complex structures from simple rules:
Components:
• Axiom (initial state - feminine/receptive)
• Production rules (generative rules - masculine/active)
• Iteration (process of generation)
Example: Generating a plant
Axiom: A
Rules: A → AB, B → A
Iteration:
• n=0: A
• n=1: AB
• n=2: ABA
• n=3: ABAAB
• n=4: ABAABABA
The rule (masculine) acts on the substrate (feminine) to generate complexity.
This is mathematical Gender: generative rule + receptive substrate → creation.
Cellular Automata: Emergence from Complementary Principles
Conway's Game of Life:
Components:
• Initial state (feminine/receptive/substrate)
• Update rules (masculine/active/generative)
• Together → Complex patterns emerge
Rules:
• Birth: Dead cell with 3 live neighbors → becomes alive
• Survival: Live cell with 2-3 neighbors → stays alive
• Death: Otherwise → becomes dead
Simple rules (masculine) + initial configuration (feminine) → infinite complexity (generation).
The Mathematics of Generation
1. Operators Acting on States
General pattern:
Operator (masculine) × State (feminine) = New State (generated)
Examples:
• Matrix × Vector = New Vector
• Differential operator × Function = Derivative
• Hamiltonian × Wave function = Energy eigenstate
2. Functions and Arguments
f(x) = y
• f = function (masculine/active/rule)
• x = argument (feminine/receptive/input)
• y = output (generated result)
Generation requires both function and argument.
3. Tensor Products
In quantum mechanics, composite systems are tensor products:
|ψ⟩ ⊗ |φ⟩ = |ψφ⟩
Two states combine to generate a new composite state.
Why Generation Requires Complementarity
Reason 1: Information Theory
To generate new information, you need:
• Source (masculine/active)
• Receiver (feminine/receptive)
• Channel (medium of generation)
Shannon's communication model requires all three.
Reason 2: Thermodynamics
To do work (generate useful energy), you need:
• Energy source (high entropy → low entropy)
• Energy sink (low entropy → high entropy)
• Gradient between them
No gradient = no work = no generation.
Reason 3: Logic
To generate new knowledge, you need:
• Premises (feminine/receptive/given)
• Inference rules (masculine/active/generative)
• Conclusion (generated knowledge)
Deduction requires both premises and rules.
Practical Applications
1. Design and Engineering
Use complementary principles:
• Structure (feminine/receptive) + Force (masculine/active) → Stability
• Hardware (feminine/substrate) + Software (masculine/rules) → Computation
• Material (feminine/receptive) + Energy (masculine/active) → Transformation
2. Creativity
Creative process requires:
• Inspiration (masculine/active/spark)
• Execution (feminine/receptive/manifestation)
• Together → Art, innovation, discovery
3. Problem Solving
Solution generation requires:
• Problem (feminine/receptive/constraint)
• Method (masculine/active/algorithm)
• Together → Solution
4. Learning
Knowledge generation requires:
• Experience (feminine/receptive/data)
• Reasoning (masculine/active/processing)
• Together → Understanding
Objections and Responses
Objection 1: "This reinforces gender stereotypes."
Response: No. The Hermetic principle isn't about human gender. It's about complementary generative principles that exist in ALL systems—electrical, chemical, computational, biological. Using "masculine/feminine" is metaphorical language for "active/receptive."
Objection 2: "Not all generation requires two principles."
Response: At some level, it does. Even asexual reproduction requires DNA (template/feminine) + polymerase (active enzyme/masculine). Even spontaneous processes require initial state + physical law.
Objection 3: "This is just input/output."
Response: Exactly! That's the point. The Hermetic "Gender" principle is the recognition that generation requires complementary inputs. It's not mystical—it's the structure of generative processes.
The Hermetic Insight Validated
The Hermeticists claimed:
"Gender is in everything; everything has its Masculine and Feminine Principles."
Modern mathematics has discovered:
• Creation/annihilation operators: ↠and â
• Generating functions: G(x) = Σaₙxⁿ
• Dialectical synthesis: Thesis + Antithesis → Synthesis
• Operator-state duality: Operator × State = New State
• Complementary principles in all generative processes
The convergence is exact:
"Gender is in everything" = "Generation requires complementary operators"
Same claim. Different language. Perfect convergence.
Conclusion: Part 2 Complete!
The seventh Hermetic Principle—Gender—is not mysticism.
It's the mathematics of generation: complementary operators creating new states.
Validated by:
• Quantum field theory: ↠and â
• Generating functions
• Dialectical synthesis
• Thermodynamic gradients
• Information theory
Generation requires complementarity because:
• Information needs source and receiver
• Work needs energy gradient
• Logic needs premises and rules
• Creation needs active and receptive principles
The Hermeticists discovered the mathematics of generation 2,000 years before quantum field theory.
Hermetic Mathematics, validated.
Part 2: The Seven Principles - COMPLETE!
We've now proven all seven Hermetic Principles are mathematical:
