Mabon Divination: Equinox Tarot Spreads and Balance Readings

Mabon Divination: Equinox Tarot Spreads and Balance Readings

BY NICOLE LAU

The autumn equinox creates powerful conditions for divination centered on balance, gratitude, harvest, and preparation for winter's introspection. These spreads and oracle methods channel the equinox's wisdom and Libra's clarity.

The Balance Scales Spread (7 Cards)

Inspired by Libra's scales, this spread reveals what's in and out of balance.

Lay cards in a scales pattern:

Card 1 (Center/Fulcrum): You at the balance point
Cards 2-4 (Left Scale): What's excessive, overemphasized, or draining energy
Cards 5-7 (Right Scale): What's lacking, underemphasized, or needs more attention
Card 8 (Below): How to restore balance

Reading: Compare the two sides. Which scale is heavier? What needs to be released or reduced? What needs to be added or increased? The bottom card shows the path to equilibrium.

The Harvest Spread (9 Cards)

What have you harvested this year? What's ready to be gathered?

Arrange in three rows of three:

Top Row - First Harvest (Lammas/August):
Card 1: What you harvested in late summer
Card 2: Lessons learned
Card 3: How it sustains you now

Middle Row - Second Harvest (Mabon/Now):
Card 4: What you're harvesting now
Card 5: Current blessings and abundance
Card 6: What still needs to be gathered

Bottom Row - Third Harvest (Samhain/October):
Card 7: What will be harvested by winter
Card 8: Final preparations needed
Card 9: How to preserve your harvest through winter

The Gratitude Spread (5 Cards)

Simple but powerful for Mabon's thanksgiving energy.

Card 1: Material blessings to be grateful for
Card 2: Emotional/relationship blessings
Card 3: Spiritual growth and lessons
Card 4: Hidden blessings you haven't recognized
Card 5: How gratitude will attract more abundance

The Light and Dark Spread (6 Cards)

Honoring the equinox's balance between light and dark.

Lay in two columns:

Light Column (Left):
Card 1: What you're bringing from summer's light
Card 2: Conscious awareness and clarity
Card 3: What you're celebrating and grateful for

Dark Column (Right):
Card 4: What you're descending into (shadow work, introspection)
Card 5: Unconscious patterns to explore
Card 6: Wisdom waiting in the darkness

Card 7 (Center, between columns): How to balance light and dark

The Apple Star Spread (5 Cards)

Based on the apple's hidden pentacle, this spread reveals hidden wisdom.

Arrange in a five-pointed star:

Top Point: Spirit - your highest wisdom
Upper Right: Water - emotional truth
Lower Right: Earth - practical reality
Lower Left: Fire - passion and will
Upper Left: Air - mental clarity
Center: The hidden wisdom at the heart of it all

The Letting Go Spread (3 Cards)

What needs to be released, like trees releasing leaves?

Card 1: What you're holding onto that needs to be released
Card 2: Why you're holding on (fear, attachment, belief)
Card 3: What becomes possible when you let go

The Preparation Spread (4 Cards)

How to prepare for winter's introspection.

Card 1: What resources you've gathered (material, emotional, spiritual)
Card 2: What still needs to be gathered before winter
Card 3: What will sustain you through dark times
Card 4: How to prepare your inner landscape for introspection

Oracle Card Methods for Mabon

The Daily Gratitude Pull

Each day of Mabon week, pull one card asking: "What blessing should I recognize and be grateful for today?"

The Balance Check-In

Pull two cards: "What needs more energy?" and "What needs less energy?" Use this to adjust your focus.

The Harvest Question

Ask: "What am I harvesting from this year's efforts?" Pull 1-3 cards for the answer.

Pendulum Divination for Balance

Use a pendulum to check balance in different life areas.

The practice: Create a chart with life areas (work, relationships, health, spirituality, creativity, rest). Hold the pendulum over each area and ask: "Is this area in balance?" The pendulum's movement indicates yes/no/needs attention.

Scrying with Apples

Use apple seeds for divination.

The method: Cut an apple crosswise to reveal the star. Count the seeds. Each number has meaning:
5 seeds: Perfect balance, all elements aligned
6 seeds: Abundance coming
4 seeds: Stability, foundation
3 seeds: Growth, expansion
Fewer or more: Unusual circumstances, pay attention to intuition

Alternatively, cast the seeds like runes and read their pattern.

Bibliomancy with Harvest Texts

Use sacred texts or poetry for Mabon guidance.

The practice: Hold a book of wisdom (poetry, mythology, sacred text) to your heart. Ask your question. Open randomly and read the passage. This is your Mabon message.

Dream Divination at the Equinox

The equinox threshold makes dreams especially prophetic.

Dream incubation: Before sleep on the equinox, place autumn leaves under your pillow. Ask: "What do I need to know about the coming season?" Record dreams immediately upon waking. They often contain guidance for winter's journey.

Signs and Omens at Mabon

Watch for these natural signs:

  • Falling leaves: What's falling away in your life? What's ready to be released?
  • Migrating birds: Time for transition, movement, or journey
  • Harvest moon: Illumination of what you've accomplished
  • First frost: Endings, completion, preservation needed
  • Ripe fruit: Abundance, sweetness, rewards for effort
  • Balance in nature: Equal day and night reminds you to seek balance

Closing Your Divination Session

Always close properly:

  1. Thank the cards, spirits, or guides
  2. Ground yourself (eat, drink, touch earth)
  3. Journal your reading
  4. Take one concrete action based on the guidance
  5. Revisit the reading in a week to see how it's unfolding

The Wisdom of Equinox Divination

Mabon divination isn't about predicting the futureβ€”it's about understanding where you are, what you've harvested, what needs balance, and how to prepare for winter's introspective journey. The cards and signs don't tell you what will happen; they reveal what is, what's possible, and what wisdom you need to navigate the turning of the wheel.
