The Emerald Tablet: 'As Above, So Below' Decoded

BY NICOLE LAU

"That which is below corresponds to that which is above, and that which is above corresponds to that which is below, to accomplish the miracle of the One Thing."

This is the most famous line from the Emerald Tabletβ€”a short, cryptic text that is the foundation of Western alchemy, Hermeticism, and esoteric philosophy.

The Emerald Tablet is said to have been written by Hermes Trismegistus (Thrice-Great Hermes) and inscribed on a tablet of emerald. According to legend, it was discovered in a cave, clutched in the hands of the corpse of Hermes himself.

The text is only about 14 lines long. But within those lines is contained the secret of secretsβ€”the master key to understanding reality, the formula for transformation, the method of creating the Philosopher's Stone.

The central axiomβ€”"As above, so below"β€”is not just a poetic phrase. It is a law of correspondence, a principle of magic, a key to understanding how the universe works.

This is the Emerald Tablet decoded.

The Legend of the Emerald Tablet

The Discovery

According to legend, the Emerald Tablet was discovered by Apollonius of Tyana (or in some versions, Alexander the Great, or Sarah, the wife of Abraham) in a cave or tomb.

Inside, they found the body of Hermes Trismegistus, seated on a throne, holding a tablet of emerald. On the tablet was inscribed the secret of alchemy, the key to transformation.

The discoverer copied the text and brought it to the world.

The Authorship

The Emerald Tablet is attributed to Hermes Trismegistusβ€”the legendary sage who is a synthesis of:

  • Thoth: The Egyptian god of wisdom, writing, and magic
  • Hermes: The Greek god of communication, alchemy, and the psychopomp

Hermes Trismegistus ("Thrice-Great") is said to be:

  • Great as a philosopher
  • Great as a priest
  • Great as a king

He is the founder of Hermeticism, the author of the Hermetic texts, the master of alchemy.

The History

The earliest known version of the Emerald Tablet appears in Arabic texts from the 6th-8th century CE. It was translated into Latin in the 12th century and became foundational to medieval and Renaissance alchemy.

The text has been translated, interpreted, and commented upon by countless alchemists, philosophers, and mystics over the centuries.

The Text of the Emerald Tablet

Here is a translation of the Emerald Tablet (based on the Latin version by Isaac Newton):

1. True, without falsehood, certain and most true:

2. That which is below corresponds to that which is above, and that which is above corresponds to that which is below, to accomplish the miracle of the One Thing.

3. And just as all things have come from this One Thing, through the meditation of One Mind, so do all created things originate from this One Thing, through transformation.

4. Its father is the Sun, its mother is the Moon.

5. The Wind carries it in its belly; its nurse is the Earth.

6. It is the origin of all, the consecration of the universe.

7. Its inherent strength is perfected if it is turned into Earth.

8. Separate the Earth from Fire, the subtle from the gross, gently and with great ingenuity.

9. It rises from Earth to Heaven and descends again to Earth, thereby combining within itself the powers of both the above and the below.

10. Thus you will obtain the glory of the whole universe. All obscurity will be clear to you.

11. This is the greatest force of all powers, because it overcomes every subtle thing and penetrates every solid thing.

12. In this way was the universe created.

13. From this comes many wondrous applications, because this is the pattern.

14. Therefore am I called Hermes Trismegistus, having all three parts of the wisdom of the whole universe. Herein have I completely explained the operation of the Sun.

Decoding the Emerald Tablet

Line 1: "True, without falsehood, certain and most true"

This is an affirmation of truth. What follows is not metaphor, not allegory, not poetry. It is truthβ€”the fundamental operating principle of reality.

Line 2: "As Above, So Below"

This is the master keyβ€”the principle of correspondence.

"That which is below corresponds to that which is above":

  • The microcosm (the small, the individual, the human) corresponds to the macrocosm (the large, the universal, the cosmic)
  • The earthly corresponds to the celestial
  • The material corresponds to the spiritual
  • The inner corresponds to the outer

"And that which is above corresponds to that which is below":

  • The correspondence works both ways
  • The divine is reflected in the human
  • The cosmic is reflected in the personal

"To accomplish the miracle of the One Thing":

  • The purpose of this correspondence is to create the One Thingβ€”the Philosopher's Stone, the unified consciousness, the integration of above and below

Line 3: The One Thing

All things come from the One Thingβ€”the primordial unity, the source, THE ALL.

Through the "meditation of One Mind" (the consciousness of THE ALL), all things are created.

All created things originate from this One Thing through transformationβ€”the alchemical process of change, evolution, becoming.

Lines 4-5: The Alchemical Family

"Its father is the Sun, its mother is the Moon":

  • The Sun = masculine, active, spirit, sulfur (in alchemy)
  • The Moon = feminine, receptive, soul, mercury (in alchemy)
  • The One Thing is born from the union of opposites

"The Wind carries it in its belly":

  • The Wind = air, breath, spirit, the medium of transformation
  • The One Thing is gestated in the spiritual realm

"Its nurse is the Earth":

  • The Earth = matter, body, the physical realm
  • The One Thing is nurtured and brought to manifestation in the material world

Lines 6-7: The Power of the One Thing

The One Thing is:

  • The origin of all
  • The consecration (the making sacred) of the universe
  • Perfected when it is "turned into Earth" (made manifest, embodied, grounded)

Line 8: The Alchemical Process

"Separate the Earth from Fire, the subtle from the gross":

This is the alchemical process of separation and purification:

  • Separate spirit (fire, subtle) from matter (earth, gross)
  • Purify each element
  • Then reunite them in a higher form

This must be done "gently and with great ingenuity"β€”alchemy is an art, not a brute force.

Line 9: The Circulation

"It rises from Earth to Heaven and descends again to Earth":

This is the circulationβ€”the alchemical process of:

  • Ascent (spiritualization, sublimation, rising from matter to spirit)
  • Descent (materialization, coagulation, bringing spirit into matter)

Through this circulation, the One Thing "combines within itself the powers of both the above and the below"β€”it integrates spirit and matter, heaven and earth, the divine and the human.

Lines 10-11: The Result

When you accomplish this, you obtain:

  • "The glory of the whole universe": Enlightenment, gnosis, union with THE ALL
  • "All obscurity will be clear": Understanding, wisdom, clarity
  • "The greatest force of all powers": The Philosopher's Stone, the power to transform anything

This force "overcomes every subtle thing and penetrates every solid thing"β€”it works on all levels, spiritual and material.

Lines 12-14: The Conclusion

This is how the universe was created. This is the pattern. This is the operation of the Sun (the divine creative force).

Hermes Trismegistus has revealed the secret.

The Meaning of "As Above, So Below"

The axiom "As above, so below" is the master key to Hermetic philosophy, alchemy, and magic.

1. The Macrocosm and Microcosm

The universe (macrocosm) is reflected in the human (microcosm). You are a miniature universe. Everything that exists in the cosmos exists within you.

Implication: To understand the universe, study yourself. To understand yourself, study the universe.

2. The Spiritual and Material

The spiritual realm (above) is reflected in the material realm (below). What happens in spirit manifests in matter. What happens in matter reflects spirit.

Implication: Change your inner world (thoughts, beliefs, consciousness), and your outer world (circumstances, experiences, reality) will change.

3. The Divine and Human

The divine (above) is reflected in the human (below). You are made in the image of God. You contain divinity.

Implication: You are not separate from the divine. You are divine. You have the power to create, to transform, to manifest.

4. The Pattern of Creation

The same patterns repeat at all levelsβ€”atoms, cells, organisms, planets, solar systems, galaxies. The pattern is fractal, holographic.

Implication: By understanding the pattern at one level, you understand it at all levels.

Working with "As Above, So Below"

1. Inner Work Creates Outer Change

If you want to change your outer world, start with your inner world:

  • Change your thoughts β†’ your reality changes
  • Change your beliefs β†’ your experiences change
  • Change your consciousness β†’ your world changes

2. Study Correspondences

Learn the systems that map correspondences:

  • Astrology: The planets (above) correspond to aspects of the psyche (below)
  • Tarot: The cards map the journey of the soul
  • Kabbalah: The Tree of Life maps the structure of reality
  • Alchemy: The transformation of metals corresponds to the transformation of the soul

3. Use the Principle in Magic

In magic, you work with correspondences:

  • You create a symbol (below) to represent a desire (above)
  • You perform a ritual (below) to invoke a spiritual force (above)
  • You change your inner state (below) to attract an outer manifestation (above)

4. Recognize Your Divinity

You are not separate from the divine. You are a reflection of the divine. You contain the divine.

As above (God), so below (you). You are made in the image of the divine. You have the power to create.

5. Integrate Above and Below

The goal is not to escape the material for the spiritual. The goal is to integrate themβ€”to bring spirit into matter, to embody the divine, to create heaven on earth.

This is the "miracle of the One Thing"β€”the union of above and below, spirit and matter, heaven and earth.

The Emerald Tablet in Alchemy

In alchemy, the Emerald Tablet is the formula for creating the Philosopher's Stone.

The Alchemical Reading:

  • The One Thing: The Philosopher's Stone, the Elixir of Life
  • The Sun and Moon: Sulfur (masculine, spirit) and Mercury (feminine, soul)
  • Separate Earth from Fire: Purify matter and spirit
  • It rises and descends: The circulationβ€”sublimation and coagulation
  • The result: The Stoneβ€”the substance that can transform lead into gold, cure all diseases, grant immortality

The Spiritual Reading:

  • The One Thing: Enlightenment, gnosis, union with the divine
  • The Sun and Moon: The integration of masculine and feminine, conscious and unconscious
  • Separate Earth from Fire: Purify the ego, refine consciousness
  • It rises and descends: Ascend to spirit, then bring spirit into matter
  • The result: The transformed selfβ€”the divine human, the embodied spirit

The Gift of the Emerald Tablet: The Master Key

The Emerald Tablet is the master key to understanding reality and transforming yourself.

It teaches:

  • As above, so below: The inner and outer are connected. Change one, change the other.
  • You are the microcosm: The universe is within you. You contain everything.
  • You are divine: You are made in the image of the divine. You have the power to create.
  • Integration is the goal: Unite above and below, spirit and matter, heaven and earth.
  • Transformation is possible: Through the alchemical process, you can transform yourself, transform reality, create the Philosopher's Stone.

This is the secret of secrets. This is the operation of the Sun. This is the wisdom of Hermes Trismegistus.

As above, so below. As within, so without. As the universe, so the soul.

You are the alchemist. You are the laboratory. You are the Philosopher's Stone.

Transform yourself. Transform the world. Accomplish the miracle of the One Thing.
