Albedo: Purification and the Emergence of Inner Light

The albedo—the whitening stage of alchemy—represents the emergence from darkness into light, the purification that follows dissolution, and the dawning of clarity after the dark night. This is the lunar work, the washing away of impurities, the separation of essence from dross. After the nigredo's complete breakdown, the albedo begins the work of clarification and purification.

The Washing and Purification

Symbolized by: the white dove or swan, moonlight and silver, washing with water, the color white, spring after winter, and dawn after night. The albedo uses water (emotion, the unconscious) to wash away what the nigredo's fire broke down. This is the stage of reflection, of seeing clearly what remains after the dissolution.

Psychological Albedo

After the dark night comes clarity. The shadow material confronted in the nigredo is now being integrated. Old patterns are recognized and released. The psyche begins to reorganize around a new center. There's a sense of relief, of lightness, of emerging from the depths. But this is not yet completion—it's purification, not perfection.

The Lunar Work

The albedo is associated with the Moon—reflective rather than generative light, receptive rather than active. This is the feminine work of allowing, receiving, and clarifying. Where the nigredo was active dissolution, the albedo is receptive purification. The work is gentler but no less essential.

The Living Wisdom

The albedo teaches that after every dark night comes a dawn, that purification follows dissolution, and that the light we seek emerges from within after the darkness has done its work. This is the stage of hope renewed, of seeing the path forward, of the inner light beginning to shine. The work is not complete, but the worst is over, and the light is growing.
