The Syntax of Tarot and Runic Symbols

The Syntax of Tarot and Runic Symbols

BY NICOLE LAU

Language has syntax—rules for combining words into meaningful sentences.

"The cat sat on the mat" makes sense.

"Mat the on sat cat the" doesn't.

Symbolic systems also have syntax—rules for combining symbols into meaningful messages.

Tarot and Runes are not just collections of random symbols. They are complete symbolic languages with grammar, syntax, and combinatorial rules.

And when you understand their syntax, you can read them like sentences—constructing complex meanings from simple elements.

What Is Symbolic Syntax?

Syntax is the set of rules that govern how elements combine to create meaning.

In language:

  • Words are elements
  • Grammar rules determine how they combine
  • Subject + Verb + Object = Sentence
  • "The hero (subject) slays (verb) the dragon (object)"

In symbolic systems:

  • Symbols are elements
  • Syntactic rules determine how they combine
  • Archetype + Action + Context = Meaning
  • "The Fool (archetype) journeys (action) through the Major Arcana (context)"

Both create structured meaning through combination.

Tarot Syntax: The Grammar of 78 Cards

The Tarot deck is a complete symbolic language with 78 "words" organized into grammatical categories.

The Structure:

22 Major Arcana — Archetypal nouns (subjects, themes, major forces)

56 Minor Arcana — Divided into:

  • 4 Suits — Elemental verbs (actions, energies)
  • 10 Number Cards per suit — Stages of development (1-10)
  • 4 Court Cards per suit — Personality modifiers (Page, Knight, Queen, King)

The Syntax:

Major Arcana = Archetypal Subjects

These are the main themes, the big forces:

  • 0 - The Fool = Innocence, new beginning, leap of faith
  • I - The Magician = Skill, manifestation, will
  • XIII - Death = Transformation, ending, rebirth
  • XVI - The Tower = Sudden change, destruction, breakthrough

Think of these as nouns: "The Fool," "Death," "The Tower"

Suits = Elemental Verbs (Actions)

These are the energies in motion:

  • Wands (Fire) = Creating, initiating, willing, inspiring
  • Cups (Water) = Feeling, loving, intuiting, flowing
  • Swords (Air) = Thinking, analyzing, cutting, communicating
  • Pentacles (Earth) = Building, manifesting, grounding, possessing

Think of these as verbs: "creates," "feels," "thinks," "builds"

Numbers = Stages of Development

These are the phases of the action:

  • Ace = Seed, potential, beginning
  • 2 = Duality, choice, balance
  • 3 = Growth, expansion, creativity
  • 4 = Structure, stability, foundation
  • 5 = Conflict, challenge, change
  • 6 = Harmony, balance, integration
  • 7 = Reflection, assessment, mystery
  • 8 = Mastery, power, movement
  • 9 = Completion, fulfillment, wisdom
  • 10 = Culmination, ending, transition

Think of these as adverbs: "initially," "conflictually," "masterfully," "completely"

Court Cards = Personality Modifiers

These are the who and how:

  • Page = Student, beginner, messenger (learning the element)
  • Knight = Warrior, seeker, extremist (actively pursuing the element)
  • Queen = Nurturer, master, internalizer (embodying the element inwardly)
  • King = Leader, authority, externalizer (wielding the element outwardly)

Think of these as adjectives: "youthfully," "actively," "receptively," "authoritatively"

Reading Tarot as Sentences

When you draw multiple cards, you're constructing a sentence:

Example 1: Three-Card Spread

Cards drawn: The Fool + Five of Swords + Queen of Cups

Translation:

  • The Fool (subject) = New beginning, innocence, leap of faith
  • Five of Swords (verb + stage) = Thinking/communicating (Swords) through conflict (5)
  • Queen of Cups (modifier) = With emotional mastery and nurturing (Queen of Water)

Sentence: "A new beginning (Fool) requires navigating conflict through communication (5 of Swords), guided by emotional wisdom and compassion (Queen of Cups)."

Example 2: Celtic Cross Position

Position 1 (Present): Death
Position 2 (Challenge): Two of Pentacles

Translation:

  • Death (subject) = Major transformation, ending, rebirth
  • Two of Pentacles (challenge) = Balancing (2) material concerns (Pentacles)

Sentence: "You're undergoing major transformation (Death), and the challenge is maintaining balance in practical matters (2 of Pentacles) during this upheaval."

The cards combine syntactically to create complex meaning.

Runic Syntax: The Grammar of 24 Runes

The Elder Futhark (24 runes) is also a complete symbolic language.

The Structure:

24 Runes organized into 3 Aetts (families) of 8 runes each

Each rune is:

  • A phoneme (sound/letter)
  • A concept (meaning)
  • An energy (force)

The Three Aetts:

Freyr's Aett (First 8) — Material world, beginnings, foundation

  • ᚠ Fehu (F) = Cattle, wealth, abundance
  • ᚢ Uruz (U) = Aurochs, strength, vitality
  • ᚦ Thurisaz (Th) = Giant, force, breakthrough
  • ᚨ Ansuz (A) = God, communication, wisdom
  • ᚱ Raidho (R) = Journey, movement, rhythm
  • ᚲ Kenaz (K) = Torch, knowledge, illumination
  • ᚷ Gebo (G) = Gift, exchange, partnership
  • ᚹ Wunjo (W) = Joy, harmony, perfection

Heimdall's Aett (Second 8) — Challenges, transformation, testing

  • ᚺ Hagalaz (H) = Hail, disruption, crisis
  • ᚾ Nauthiz (N) = Need, constraint, necessity
  • ᛁ Isa (I) = Ice, stillness, stasis
  • ᛃ Jera (J) = Year, harvest, cycles
  • ᛇ Eihwaz (Ei) = Yew, death/rebirth, endurance
  • ᛈ Perthro (P) = Lot cup, fate, mystery
  • ᛉ Algiz (Z) = Elk, protection, connection to divine
  • ᛊ Sowilo (S) = Sun, success, wholeness

Tyr's Aett (Third 8) — Spiritual development, mastery, completion

  • ᛏ Tiwaz (T) = Tyr, justice, sacrifice
  • ᛒ Berkano (B) = Birch, growth, nurturing
  • ᛖ Ehwaz (E) = Horse, partnership, movement
  • ᛗ Mannaz (M) = Human, self, consciousness
  • ᛚ Laguz (L) = Water, flow, intuition
  • ᛜ Ingwaz (Ng) = Ing, fertility, completion
  • ᛞ Dagaz (D) = Day, breakthrough, awakening
  • ᛟ Othala (O) = Ancestral property, heritage, home

The Syntax:

Runes combine in several ways:

1. Sequential Reading (Left to Right)

Like reading a sentence, runes flow from cause to effect:

Example: ᚠ Fehu + ᚱ Raidho + ᚹ Wunjo

Translation:

  • ᚠ Fehu = Wealth, resources
  • ᚱ Raidho = Journey, movement
  • ᚹ Wunjo = Joy, success

Sentence: "Resources (Fehu) set in motion (Raidho) lead to joy and success (Wunjo)."

2. Bindrunes (Combination)

Multiple runes merged into one symbol, creating a compound word:

Example: ᚠ Fehu + ᚢ Uruz combined

Translation: Wealth (Fehu) + Strength (Uruz) = "Powerful abundance" or "Strong resources"

Like combining "sun" + "flower" = "sunflower" (a new, unified concept)

3. Galdr (Runic Formulas)

Runes chanted in sequence, creating a magical sentence:

Example: ᚨᛚᚢ (Ansuz + Laguz + Uruz)

Translation:

  • ᚨ Ansuz = Divine communication
  • ᛚ Laguz = Intuitive flow
  • ᚢ Uruz = Vital strength

Formula: "Divine wisdom (Ansuz) flowing intuitively (Laguz) with vital power (Uruz)" = A formula for inspired strength

Comparing Tarot and Runic Syntax

Aspect Tarot Runes
Elements 78 cards 24 runes
Organization Major/Minor Arcana, 4 suits, numbers, courts 3 aetts (families) of 8
Grammar Nouns (Major), Verbs (Suits), Modifiers (Courts, Numbers) Phonemes + Concepts + Energies
Combination Spreads (positional syntax) Sequential, bindrunes, galdr
Reading Cards in positions create sentences Runes in sequence create formulas
Emphasis Psychological, archetypal, narrative Energetic, phonetic, magical

Both are complete languages with different syntactic structures.

Why Syntax Matters

Understanding syntax allows you to:

1. Construct Complex Meanings

You can combine simple symbols to create nuanced messages:

  • Tarot: "The Magician + Three of Wands + King of Pentacles" = "Skillful manifestation (Magician) through creative expansion (3 of Wands) with material mastery (King of Pentacles)"
  • Runes: "ᚲ Kenaz + ᚨ Ansuz + ᛗ Mannaz" = "Knowledge (Kenaz) communicated divinely (Ansuz) to awaken consciousness (Mannaz)"

2. Read Fluently

You don't just see individual symbols—you read sentences.

3. Create Intentionally

You can construct your own formulas:

  • Tarot spreads designed for specific questions
  • Bindrunes crafted for specific intentions

Why This Matters for Practice

Understanding symbolic syntax gives you:

1. Symbol Literacy
You can read symbolic languages fluently, not just memorize individual meanings.

2. Creative Combination
You can construct new meanings by combining symbols according to syntactic rules.

3. Deeper Interpretation
You understand that symbols interact—their meanings shift based on combination and context.

The Operational Truth

Here's what symbolic syntax reveals:

  • Tarot and Runes are complete symbolic languages with syntax
  • Tarot: 78 cards organized as nouns (Major), verbs (Suits), modifiers (Courts/Numbers)
  • Runes: 24 runes organized in 3 aetts, combining as phonemes + concepts + energies
  • Both use combinatorial rules to create complex meanings
  • Understanding syntax = reading symbols as sentences

This is not mysticism. This is the linguistics of symbolic systems.

Practice: Syntactic Reading

Tarot Practice:

Draw three cards and construct a sentence:

Card 1: ___ (What is the subject/theme?)

Card 2: ___ (What is the action/energy?)

Card 3: ___ (What is the modifier/outcome?)

Sentence: "[Card 1] is [Card 2] through/with [Card 3]."

Runic Practice:

Draw three runes and construct a formula:

Rune 1: ___ (What is the starting energy?)

Rune 2: ___ (What is the transforming force?)

Rune 3: ___ (What is the outcome?)

Formula: "[Rune 1] transforms through [Rune 2] into [Rune 3]."

Tarot and Runes are not random symbol collections.

They are complete symbolic languages with grammar and syntax.

And when you learn their syntax, you can read them like books.
