Hexagram 7: Shi (The Army, 师) - Organized Force and Disciplined Action
BY NICOLE LAU
Shi (师, The Army) is Hexagram 7 in the I Ching, following Song (Conflict). With binary encoding 000010, Shi represents organized force, disciplined collective action, and leadership that unifies many under one vision. This is not chaotic violence but structured power - the army under a capable general, the organization under strong leadership, the collective mobilized for a common purpose.
Traditional Interpretation
Classical I Ching texts describe Shi as "The Army" or "The Troops." The character 师 depicts a multitude organized under authority. Key attributes: Discipline (纪律) - order, structure, obedience to command. Unity (团结) - collective action, shared purpose. Leadership (领导) - capable commander, clear authority. Righteousness (正义) - just cause, moral foundation. The Judgment: "The Army needs perseverance and a strong man. Good fortune without blame." The Image: "In the middle of the earth is water: the image of the Army. Thus the superior person increases his masses by generosity toward the people."
Binary Encoding: 000010
In binary: 000010. In decimal: 2. Structure: Line 1 (bottom): Yin (0). Line 2: Yang (1) - single strong leader. Lines 3-6: Yin (0000) - the multitude. Single yang at position 2 - one leader among the people, not distant ruler. Yin dominance (5 yin, 1 yang) - the many follow the one. This is organized force: one leader commands many followers, positioned among them, not above them.
Yin-Yang Dynamics
Single yang among yin - leader's strength comes from unifying the multitude. Yang at position 2 - leader among the people. Water in Earth metaphor - Shi's upper trigram is Kun (Earth, ☷, 000), lower is Kan (Water, ☵, 010). Water hidden in earth = hidden reserves, nourishment, depth. Leader builds strength through generosity.
Modern Applications
Business: Corporate execution, project management, crisis response - all require clear leadership, disciplined teams, unified execution. Social Movements: Organized activism, community organizing, political campaigns - discipline and unity determine success. Personal: Self-discipline, goal execution, habit formation - your will organizing your behaviors.
Systems Science Framework
Shi is organized collective state - unified direction, disciplined execution, emergent power through structure. Solves collective action problem through leadership. Army's power emerges from organization, not individual strengths. Centralized control: efficient for coordination, vulnerable to leader failure.
Practical Guidance
