10 Different Methods to Create Sigils (With Examples)
BY NICOLE LAU
Most people learn one method for creating sigils—usually the letter-reduction technique popularized by Austin Osman Spare—and assume that's the only way.
But sigil creation is far more diverse than that. Different methods resonate with different minds, different intentions, and different energetic states. What works beautifully for one practitioner might feel awkward for another.
In this article, we'll explore 10 distinct methods for creating sigils. Try them all. See which ones feel natural to you. Your ideal method might be the one you've never heard of.
Method 1: Letter Reduction (The Classic Spare Method)
This is the foundational technique that most practitioners start with, and for good reason—it's simple, effective, and works for almost any intention.
How It Works:
- Write your intention as a statement: "I AM FINANCIALLY ABUNDANT"
- Remove all vowels: "M F N N C L L Y B N D N T"
- Remove duplicate letters: "M F N C L Y B D T"
- Combine the remaining letters into a unique symbol
Example: For "I ATTRACT SUCCESS," you'd get: T R C S (after removing vowels and duplicates). These letters can be overlapped, rotated, and merged until they form a symbol that no longer looks like letters.
Best For: Beginners, clear intentions, when you want a structured approach
Tip: Don't overthink the design. Your first instinct for how to combine the letters is usually the right one.
Method 2: Word Method (Mantra Sigils)
Instead of breaking down a full sentence, use a single powerful word or short phrase as your sigil base.
How It Works:
- Choose a word that encapsulates your intention: ABUNDANCE, PROTECTION, LOVE
- Stylize the word itself into a symbol by connecting letters, overlapping them, or abstracting the shapes
- Continue modifying until it's more symbol than word
Example: Take the word HEAL. Connect the H and E, overlap the A and L, curve the lines, add flourishes until it becomes a flowing symbol rather than readable text.
Best For: Simple, focused intentions; when you want the sigil to retain some connection to the original word
Our Abundance Sigil, Protection Sigil, and Love Sigil designs use variations of this method—single-word intentions transformed into powerful symbols.
Method 3: Pictorial Method (Visual Representation)
For visual thinkers, creating a sigil that directly represents your intention through imagery can be more powerful than abstract symbols.
How It Works:
- Identify the core visual element of your intention (a heart for love, a coin for money, a shield for protection)
- Simplify and abstract that image
- Add geometric or symbolic elements
- Refine until it feels charged with meaning
Example: For career success, you might start with an upward arrow, add a crown or star at the top, incorporate your initials into the design, and surround it with a circle for completion.
Best For: Visual thinkers, intentions that have clear symbolic associations, when you want the sigil to be immediately evocative
Method 4: Kamea/Magic Square Method
This ancient technique uses number squares (kameas) associated with planetary energies to create sigils with specific vibrational qualities.
How It Works:
- Choose a kamea based on your intention (Saturn for protection, Venus for love, Jupiter for abundance)
- Convert your intention into numbers using numerology (A=1, B=2, etc.)
- Plot those numbers on the kamea grid
- Connect the points to create your sigil
Example: For LOVE (L=12, O=15, V=22, E=5), you'd plot these numbers on the Venus kamea (a 7x7 grid) and draw lines connecting them in sequence.
Best For: Practitioners interested in planetary magic, when you want to add astrological timing to your work, mathematically-minded people
We'll explore this method in depth in a dedicated article on Kamea sigil creation.
Method 5: Automatic Drawing (Channeled Sigils)
This intuitive method bypasses the conscious mind entirely, allowing your subconscious to create the sigil directly.
How It Works:
- Enter a meditative or trance state
- Hold your intention clearly in mind
- Let your hand draw without conscious direction
- When you feel complete, stop
- Refine the drawing if needed, or use it as-is
Example: Close your eyes, focus on "I am protected," and let your hand move across the paper. The resulting symbol might be geometric, organic, or completely abstract—trust what emerges.
Best For: Intuitive practitioners, when you want to bypass mental resistance, shadow work intentions
Tip: This method works especially well when combined with breathwork or rhythmic music to deepen the trance state.
Method 6: Geometric Construction
Build your sigil using sacred geometry principles—circles, triangles, squares, spirals, and their combinations.
How It Works:
- Choose geometric shapes that resonate with your intention
- Combine them in meaningful ways (overlapping, nesting, intersecting)
- Add lines, dots, or other elements to personalize
- Refine until the geometry feels balanced and charged
Example: For abundance, you might create a spiral (growth) inside a circle (wholeness) with triangles pointing upward (expansion) at the cardinal points.
Best For: People who resonate with sacred geometry, intentions related to balance and harmony, when you want aesthetically pleasing sigils
Many of our Crystal Grid designs incorporate this principle—sacred geometry as a foundation for intention.
Method 7: Numerical Reduction
Similar to the kamea method but simpler—reduce your intention to a single number, then create a sigil based on that number's shape and symbolism.
How It Works:
- Convert your intention to numbers (A=1, B=2, etc.)
- Add all numbers together
- Reduce to a single digit (e.g., 47 becomes 4+7=11, then 1+1=2)
- Create a sigil incorporating that number's shape or symbolism
Example: If your intention reduces to 3, you might create a sigil with three points, three circles, or incorporate triangle symbolism.
Best For: People who work with numerology, when you want to add numerical power to your sigils
Method 8: Elemental Method
Create sigils based on elemental correspondences—Fire, Water, Air, Earth, and Spirit.
How It Works:
- Determine which element best represents your intention
- Use shapes associated with that element (triangles for fire, circles for water, etc.)
- Incorporate elemental symbols or colors
- Build your sigil from these elemental foundations
Example: For a passion-related intention (Fire), use upward-pointing triangles, sharp angles, and dynamic lines. For emotional healing (Water), use flowing curves, circles, and wave-like patterns.
Best For: Practitioners who work with elemental magic, when your intention has a clear elemental association
Method 9: Alphabet Substitution
Create or use an existing magical alphabet (Theban, Enochian, Runes, etc.) to write your intention, then combine the letters into a sigil.
How It Works:
- Choose a magical alphabet
- Write your intention in that alphabet
- Combine the letters into a unified symbol
- Simplify and refine
Example: Write "WEALTH" in Theban script, then overlap and merge the letters until they form a single cohesive symbol.
Best For: Practitioners who work with specific magical traditions, when you want to add layers of symbolic meaning
Our Elder Futhark Runes Journal can be used for this method if you're working with Norse magical traditions.
Method 10: Hybrid/Freestyle Method
Combine multiple methods to create sigils that work specifically for your unique consciousness.
How It Works:
- Start with any method that appeals to you
- Add elements from other methods as you feel drawn
- Trust your intuition about what to include
- Refine until it feels complete
Example: Begin with letter reduction, add geometric elements for balance, incorporate a pictorial symbol that represents your intention, and finish with automatic drawing to add intuitive flourishes.
Best For: Experienced practitioners, complex intentions, when you want maximum personalization
This is often where practitioners end up after experimenting with all the other methods—creating their own unique approach that combines their favorite elements.
Choosing Your Method
How do you know which method to use? Here are some guidelines:
If you're analytical and logical: Try letter reduction, kamea, or numerical methods
If you're visual and artistic: Try pictorial, geometric, or automatic drawing methods
If you're intuitive and spiritual: Try automatic drawing, elemental, or alphabet substitution
If you're new to sigils: Start with letter reduction, then experiment with others
If you're experienced: Try the hybrid method or challenge yourself with techniques you haven't used before
The Method Doesn't Matter (But It Also Does)
Here's the paradox: the creation method doesn't determine whether your sigil works. A sigil created with any of these methods, when properly activated, will be effective.
But the method does matter for your personal engagement with the process. If a method feels natural and enjoyable, you'll create sigils more often and with more focus. That consistency and focus is what actually makes the difference.
The best method is the one you'll actually use.
Experimentation is Key
Don't just read about these methods—try them. Create the same intention using three different methods and see which one feels most powerful to you.
Keep a sigil journal to track which methods work best for which types of intentions. You might discover that you prefer letter reduction for career goals but automatic drawing for emotional healing.
There's no universal "best" method. There's only what works best for you, for this intention, at this time.
Beyond the Basics
These 10 methods are just the beginning. As you practice, you'll likely develop your own variations and innovations. That's not just acceptable—it's encouraged.
Sigil magic is a living practice, not a rigid system. Every practitioner who engages with it deeply eventually creates their own unique approach.
Your consciousness is unique. Your sigils should be too.
In our next article, we'll dive deep into the Austin Osman Spare Method—the original sigil technique that started it all. We'll explore not just the mechanics, but the philosophy and psychology behind why it works so effectively.
