What Are Time Fractals?

A fractal is a pattern that repeats at different scales. A coastline looks jagged whether you view it from space or examine a single meter. A tree's branching pattern appears in its whole structure, each branch, and each twig. Fractals are self-similar across scale.

Time exhibits the same property. A day has a rhythm (morning, afternoon, evening, night). A year has the same rhythm (spring, summer, fall, winter). A lifetime has the same rhythm (childhood, adulthood, maturity, old age). The pattern repeats at different temporal scales.

To use the I Ching as a fractal time system:

1. Specify your scale: Are you asking about today, this month, this year, this decade?
2. Receive the pattern: The hexagram shows the fractal structure at that scale
3. Check other scales: Cast again for different timescales—do the patterns align or conflict?
4. Navigate harmonically: Align your actions with the dominant fractal pattern across scales

For example, if you're in Hexagram 12 (Standstill) at the daily scale but Hexagram 1 (Creative) at the yearly scale, you know today's stagnation is temporary—the larger pattern favors initiation.
