Hematite: Warriors' Stone

Hematite ("blood stone" from Greek "haima") - metallic iron oxide that bleeds red when powdered. Roman soldiers wore hematite amulets for courage, protection, invincibility in battle. Mixed accurate observation with mythology and superstition. Became authoritative gemstone reference for 1500+ years, influencing medieval lapidaries and Renaissance scholars.

Gemstone Seals and Signet Rings

Greeks and Romans carved gemstones into seals - personal signatures pressed into wax. Intaglios (carved inward) and cameos (carved outward) depicted gods, heroes, portraits, symbols. Carnelian, onyx, agate, jasper commonly used. Seals served as identification, authentication, talismans. Art form reached supreme mastery.

Medical Uses

Greek physician Dioscorides (40-90 CE) prescribed gemstones medicinally: hematite for blood disorders, jasper for stomach ailments, emerald for eye problems, amethyst for headaches. Ground into powders, worn as amulets, placed on body. Some treatments had basis (copper in malachite is antibacterial), others purely symbolic.

Mythological Associations
