Black Magic: Candles, Crystals, Herbs & Rituals for Protection and Shadow Work
This is Part 29 of 37 in the Color Magic series. For the spiritual foundations of black, see: Black: The Complete Spiritual Guide.
Black in the Magical Tradition
Black magic β in the genuine sense, not the distorted popular sense β is the most powerful and the most misunderstood of the color magics. It is the magic of the dark moon, of the fertile void, of the descent into the underworld that is the prerequisite for genuine transformation. It is the magic of protection, of banishing, of the honest examination of what has been hidden in the shadow, and of the alchemical work of turning the lead of the rejected self into the gold of genuine wholeness.
In contemporary magical practice, black is the color of:
- Protection β the most powerful energetic shielding, the absorption of what is harmful
- Banishing β the removal of what does not serve, of what has overstayed its welcome
- Shadow work β the honest examination and integration of the rejected self
- Dark moon magic β the most powerful time for endings, releases, and the work of the deep dark
- Binding β the containment of harmful energy or behavior
- Transformation β the alchemical Nigredo, the dissolution that precedes genuine renewal
- Truth-seeing β the obsidian mirror that reveals what is actually there
Black Candle Magic
What Black Candles Are For
Black candles carry the energy of the fertile void, of the dark moon, of the most powerful protective and transformative forces in the magical tradition. They are used for workings that require genuine power β for protection that goes deep, for banishing that is complete, for the shadow work that transforms rather than merely adjusts.
Use black candles for:
- Protection workings β the most powerful energetic shielding
- Banishing β removing what does not serve from your life and energy field
- Shadow work rituals β the honest examination of what has been hidden
- Dark moon rituals β endings, releases, the work of the deep dark
- Binding β the containment of harmful energy
- Transformation workings β when you need genuine change at the deepest level
- Saturday workings β Saturn's day amplifies all black intentions
Black Candle Correspondences
- Planet: Saturn (structure, discipline, the long view) and Pluto (transformation, death and rebirth)
- Day: Saturday (Saturn)
- Element: Earth and Spirit
- Number: 8 (Saturn's number, the number of power and transformation) and 0 (the void, the infinite potential)
- Moon phase: Dark moon (the most powerful time for black magic); waning moon for banishing and release
- Best timing: Midnight, the dark moon, Saturday
Dressing a Black Candle
Anoint black candles with black pepper oil (protection, banishing), patchouli (earth magic, the deep dark), or myrrh (transformation, the sacred dark). Roll the dressed candle in black salt (protection, banishing), dried mugwort (the dark moon herb), or crushed black pepper. Carve your intention: PROTECT, BANISH, RELEASE, TRANSFORM, TRUTH, SHADOW, VOID.
Black Salt: The Essential Tool
Black salt β made by combining sea salt with activated charcoal, black pepper, and ash from protective herbs β is one of the most powerful tools in black magic. It absorbs and neutralizes negative energy, creates powerful protective boundaries, and is used in banishing workings to drive away what is harmful.
Uses of black salt:
- Sprinkle across doorways and windowsills to prevent negative energy from entering
- Create a protective circle around your altar or ritual space
- Add to banishing spell bags
- Sprinkle around the perimeter of your home for protection
- Use in banishing baths to remove attached negative energy
Black Herbs, Resins, and Botanicals
Black Pepper
The herb of protection and banishing β black pepper drives away negative energy, breaks hexes, and creates a powerful protective boundary. Use it in black candle dressings, in protective sachets, and in banishing workings.
Myrrh
The resin of transformation and the sacred dark β myrrh has been used in sacred ritual across cultures for thousands of years. It promotes the kind of deep, transformative work that black magic requires. Burn it as incense during shadow work rituals and transformation workings.
Elderberry
The berry of the elder tree β the tree of the threshold between worlds, of the ancestors, of the wisdom of the dark. Elderberry is used in black magic for protection, for connection to the ancestors, and for the kind of deep wisdom that comes from genuine encounter with the dark.
Wormwood
The herb of the underworld β wormwood is used in black magic for banishing, for protection, and for the activation of psychic perception in the dark. Use it with care; it is a powerful herb that should be used in small amounts.
Mullein
The herb of protection and the dark β mullein is used in black magic for protection workings and for the activation of the inner senses in the darkness. Mullein torches were used in ancient ritual to light the way through the dark.
Complete Black Magic Rituals
Ritual 1: Dark Moon Protection Working
Best timing: Dark moon, Saturday, midnight
You will need: Black candle, black tourmaline, black salt, myrrh incense, black pepper
Method: Create a circle of black salt around your altar. Light the myrrh incense. Light the black candle.
Hold the black tourmaline in both hands. Feel its weight β dense, grounding, absorbing. Visualize it drawing all harmful energy toward itself and neutralizing it completely.
Speak: I am protected. Nothing that is not in alignment with my highest good can reach me. I am surrounded by the protective darkness of the fertile void. I am held by the earth. I am safe in the dark.
Place the black tourmaline at the entrance of your home. Sprinkle black salt across the threshold. Renew this working at each dark moon.
Ritual 2: Banishing What Does Not Serve
Best timing: Waning moon, dark moon, Saturday
You will need: Black candle, obsidian, black pepper, paper and pen, fireproof bowl
Method: Write on the paper: what you are banishing. Be specific β a pattern, a relationship dynamic, a belief, a habit, an energy that has been draining you. Write it completely and honestly.
Light the black candle. Hold the obsidian and look into its surface. See the truth of what you are releasing β clearly, without sentimentality, without the softening that makes it easier to hold on.
Speak: I release this. It no longer serves me. It no longer has a place in my life or my energy field. I banish it completely and permanently. It is done.
Burn the paper in the fireproof bowl. Watch it become ash. The banishing is complete.
Ritual 3: Shadow Work Descent
Best timing: Dark moon, any time you are ready for genuine shadow work
You will need: Black candle, obsidian, journal, complete privacy and time
Method: This ritual requires genuine courage and genuine honesty. It is not for the faint of heart β but it is for anyone who is ready to claim the full complexity of who they are.
Light the black candle. Hold the obsidian. Close your eyes. Ask: what am I most afraid to look at in myself? What have I most consistently refused to acknowledge? What is living in my shadow?
Wait. Notice what arises β the impulse to look away, the discomfort, the resistance. Stay with it. The shadow reveals itself to those who are willing to look.
When something arises β an impulse, a quality, a part of yourself that you have rejected β speak to it: I see you. I acknowledge you. You are part of me. I am no longer willing to pretend you do not exist. I am claiming you as part of the whole of who I am.
Write in your journal: what you found. What it means. What it would look like to integrate this part of yourself rather than continuing to suppress it.
