Calling the Quarters: Elemental Invocations

BY NICOLE LAU

The Four Elements Are Waiting to Support Your Magic—Here's How to Call Them

You stand in your ritual circle, ready to begin. But something feels incomplete. The space feels empty. You're doing the work alone.

This is what happens when you don't call the quarters.

Calling the quarters—invoking the four elements (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) and Spirit—is one of the most powerful parts of ritual. When you call the quarters, you're not alone. You have the support, witness, and power of the elemental forces. Your circle becomes balanced, protected, and charged with elemental energy.

But most people either skip this step or do it mechanically, without understanding what they're actually doing. When you understand the elements and how to invoke them properly, calling the quarters transforms from rote words into genuine power.

Welcome to the fourth article in our Ritual Design & Practice series. Today, we're mastering calling the quarters: what the quarters are, the four elements and their correspondences, why we call them, how to call them (basic and advanced), releasing the quarters, variations, and creating your own invocations.

The elements are waiting. Let's call them in.

What Are the Quarters?

The Definition:
The quarters are the four cardinal directions (East, South, West, North) and their corresponding elements (Air, Fire, Water, Earth). In many traditions, a fifth element—Spirit—is placed at the center.

Why We Call Them:

1. Elemental Balance
Each element represents a different type of energy and aspect of reality. Calling all four creates balance and wholeness in your ritual.

2. Witness and Support
The elements witness your work and lend their power. You're not doing magic alone—you have elemental allies.

3. Protection
The quarters create a protective boundary. Each element guards its direction, keeping your circle safe.

4. Energetic Amplification
Invoking the elements charges your circle with their power. Your magic is amplified by elemental energy.

5. Connection to Nature
Calling the quarters connects you to the natural world and the fundamental forces of existence.

How to Call the Quarters: Basic Method

Preparation:
- Stand in the center of your circle
- Have representations of each element on your altar or at each direction
- Ground and center yourself

The Process:

Step 1: Face East
Turn to face East. Raise your arms or point your wand/athame.

Say:
"I call upon the East, element of Air. Powers of clarity, communication, and new beginnings. Witness this rite and lend your power. Hail and welcome!"

Visualize: Yellow light or wind coming from the East, filling that quarter of your circle.

Step 2: Face South
Turn clockwise to face South.

Say:
"I call upon the South, element of Fire. Powers of transformation, passion, and courage. Witness this rite and lend your power. Hail and welcome!"

Visualize: Red flames or heat coming from the South.

Step 3: Face West
Turn clockwise to face West.

Say:
"I call upon the West, element of Water. Powers of healing, intuition, and flow. Witness this rite and lend your power. Hail and welcome!"

Visualize: Blue water or waves coming from the West.

Step 4: Face North
Turn clockwise to face North.

Say:
"I call upon the North, element of Earth. Powers of grounding, manifestation, and abundance. Witness this rite and lend your power. Hail and welcome!"

Visualize: Green earth or mountains coming from the North.

Step 5: Face Center (Optional but Powerful)
Return to center. Raise your arms or place hands on heart.

Say:
"I call upon Spirit, the fifth element. Divine presence that connects all things. Witness this rite and fill this circle. Hail and welcome!"

Visualize: White or violet light descending from above and rising from below, filling the center.

Step 6: Acknowledge the Circle is Complete
"The quarters are called. The circle is complete. We stand between the worlds. Let the ritual begin."

Advanced Invocations

Poetic Invocations:

East (Air):
"Guardians of the Eastern tower, winds of dawn and mental power,
Breath of life and thought made clear, I call you now to witness here.
Hail and welcome, powers of Air!"

South (Fire):
"Guardians of the Southern flame, passion's heat and sacred name,
Fire of will and transformation, I call you to this consecration.
Hail and welcome, powers of Fire!"

West (Water):
"Guardians of the Western sea, depths of feeling, flow to me,
Waters of emotion, healing, love, I call you from the realms above.
Hail and welcome, powers of Water!"

North (Earth):
"Guardians of the Northern stone, ancient earth and sacred bone,
Grounding force and fertile ground, I call you to this circle round.
Hail and welcome, powers of Earth!"

Deity-Specific Invocations:

You can call on specific deities or beings associated with each element:

West: Undines (water elementals), Archangel Gabriel, Venus, Aphrodite
North: Gnomes (earth elementals), Archangel Uriel, Saturn, Gaia

Personal Invocations:

Create your own based on what each element means to you. Speak from the heart.

Releasing the Quarters

When: At the end of ritual, during the Closing phase

How: Face each direction in reverse order (North, West, South, East) and thank/release

North:
"Powers of Earth, I thank you for your grounding and support. Go if you must, stay if you will. Hail and farewell!"

West:
"Powers of Water, I thank you for your healing and flow. Go if you must, stay if you will. Hail and farewell!"

South:
"Powers of Fire, I thank you for your transformation and passion. Go if you must, stay if you will. Hail and farewell!"

East:
"Powers of Air, I thank you for your clarity and inspiration. Go if you must, stay if you will. Hail and farewell!"

Spirit (if called):
"Spirit, divine presence, I thank you for filling this circle. Blessed be."

Important: Always release the quarters. Don't leave them hanging.

Variations and Adaptations

Variation 1: Silent Calling
If you can't speak aloud, call the quarters silently in your mind. Visualization and intention are what matter.

Variation 2: Gesture Only
Face each direction, make a gesture (arms raised, hand to heart, etc.), and visualize the element. No words needed.

Variation 3: Different Directional Correspondences
Some traditions use different directions for elements. Use what resonates with you or your tradition.

Variation 4: Calling Specific Aspects
Call on specific qualities you need:
- East: "I call upon Air for clarity in this decision"
- South: "I call upon Fire for courage to act"
- West: "I call upon Water for emotional healing"
- North: "I call upon Earth for grounding and stability"

Variation 5: Elemental Tools
Hold or touch the elemental tool as you call each quarter (incense for Air, candle for Fire, water bowl for Water, salt for Earth).

Conclusion: The Elements Are Your Allies

When you call the quarters, you're not just reciting words. You're invoking the fundamental forces of existence. You're inviting the elements to witness, support, and empower your work.

Air brings clarity. Fire brings transformation. Water brings healing. Earth brings manifestation. Spirit brings connection.

Together, they create balance, protection, and power.

So call them. Every ritual. With intention and respect.

Because the elements are waiting to support your magic. All you have to do is ask.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
