Mystical Internal Locus: Inherent Divinity

Mystical Internal Locus: Inherent Divinity

BY NICOLE LAU

Series: Locus and Spirituality - Worth in Transcendence (Part 3 of 7)

"You are already whole."

"You are made in the image of God."

"You are already enlightenedβ€”you just need to remember."

This is the voice of mystical spirituality. And it is internal locus in theological form.

When divine love is unconditionalβ€”when you are sacred simply because you existβ€”worth becomes inherent. You do not earn it. You recognize it.

This article explores how mystical traditions across religions teach inherent divinity, unconditional love, and enlightenment as recognition rather than achievement.

Inherent Divinity: The Teaching

The Core Message

"You are already divine. You are not separate from God/Brahman/Buddha-nature/the Tao. You are sacred simply because you exist."

This is inherent divinity. And it creates spiritual internal locus.

The Locus Pattern

  1. I am valuable simply because I exist
  2. I am already whole, already divine, already worthy
  3. I do not need to earn worthβ€”I need to recognize it
  4. Spiritual practice is not about becomingβ€”it is about remembering

This is worth independence in spiritual form. Your value is inherent, not conditional on belief, behavior, or spiritual achievement.

Unconditional Divine Love

"God Loves Youβ€”Period"

Mystical traditions teach that divine love is unconditional. You do not earn it. You do not deserve it. You simply receive it.

Examples across traditions:

Christian Mysticism: Grace Freely Given

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of Godβ€”not the result of works, so that no one may boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9)

"God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them." (1 John 4:16)

The teaching: God's love is not earned. It is freely given. You are loved not because of what you do, but because of what you areβ€”a beloved child of God.

Sufism: Already One with Allah

"I was a hidden treasure, and I loved to be known, so I created the creation that I might be known." (Hadith Qudsi)

"Wherever you turn, there is the Face of God." (Quran 2:115)

The teaching: You are not separate from Allah. The divine is within you and around you. The journey is not about reaching Godβ€”it is about recognizing that you are already in God's presence.

Bhakti (Hindu Devotion): Unconditional Divine Love

"Even if you are the most sinful of all sinners, you will cross over all sin by the raft of knowledge alone." (Bhagavad Gita 4:36)

"I am the same to all beings; none is hateful or dear to me. But those who worship me with devotion are in me, and I am in them." (Bhagavad Gita 9:29)

The teaching: The divine loves you unconditionally. Your devotion is not about earning loveβ€”it is about opening to the love that is already there.

The Shift from Earning to Receiving

External locus (conditional love): "I must earn God's love through obedience, purity, or achievement."

Internal locus (unconditional love): "God's love is already given. I do not earn itβ€”I receive it. I am loved simply because I exist."

This shift is profound. It moves from striving to resting. From performance to presence. From fear to love.

Enlightenment as Recognition, Not Achievement

"You Are Already Enlightened"

Many mystical traditions teach that enlightenment is not something you achieveβ€”it is something you recognize.

You are already whole. You are already free. You just do not know it yet.

Examples Across Traditions

Advaita Vedanta: You Are Already Brahman

"Tat tvam asi" (You are That) - Chandogya Upanishad

"Brahman alone is real; the world is illusory; the individual soul is nothing but Brahman." - Adi Shankara

The teaching: You are not separate from ultimate reality (Brahman). You are already divine. Enlightenment is not becoming Brahmanβ€”it is recognizing that you already are Brahman.

Zen Buddhism: Original Buddha-Nature

"All beings are from the very beginning Buddhas." - Hakuin Ekaku

"If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him." - Linji Yixuan (meaning: do not seek Buddha outside yourself)

The teaching: You already have Buddha-nature. Enlightenment is not achieving something newβ€”it is seeing what has always been true.

Christian Mysticism: Already in God's Image

"So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them." (Genesis 1:27)

"The kingdom of God is within you." (Luke 17:21)

The teaching: You are made in God's image. The divine is already within you. Salvation is not about becoming worthyβ€”it is about recognizing your inherent worth.

Taoism: Already One with the Tao

"The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name." (Tao Te Ching 1)

"Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished." (Lao Tzu)

The teaching: You are already part of the Tao (the Way). You do not need to striveβ€”you need to align with what already is.

The Shift from Becoming to Remembering

External locus (achievement): "I must achieve enlightenment. I must become worthy. I must climb the spiritual ladder."

Internal locus (recognition): "I am already enlightened. I am already whole. I just need to remember. The spiritual path is not about becomingβ€”it is about uncovering what I already am."

Mystical Practices That Cultivate Internal Locus

1. Contemplative Prayer (Christian Mysticism)

Practice: Resting in God's presence without words, without striving. Simply being with the divine.

Locus teaching: You do not need to earn God's attention. You are already in God's presence. Just rest.

2. Dhikr (Sufi Remembrance)

Practice: Repeating the names of Allah or phrases like "La ilaha illallah" (There is no god but God) to remember divine presence.

Locus teaching: You are not separate from Allah. You are remembering what is already true.

3. Self-Inquiry (Advaita Vedanta)

Practice: Asking "Who am I?" to recognize that you are not the egoβ€”you are Brahman.

Locus teaching: You are already divine. You just need to see through the illusion of separation.

4. Zazen (Zen Meditation)

Practice: Sitting meditation without goal, without striving. Just sitting.

Locus teaching: You are already Buddha-nature. You do not need to achieve anything. Just be.

5. Bhakti Devotion (Hindu Love)

Practice: Loving devotion to the divine, not to earn love, but to express love.

Locus teaching: The divine already loves you. Your devotion is response, not transaction.

The Paradox of Mystical Practice

Here is the paradox: The less you strive for enlightenment, the more you realize you are already enlightened.

When you stop trying to become worthy and simply rest in being, you recognize:

  • You are already whole
  • You are already loved
  • You are already divine
  • You are already free

This is not passivity. This is recognition. And recognition is the foundation of transformation.

Case Example: From Shame to Sacred Worth

Maria's Story

Background: Maria, 42, grew up in a strict religious environment. She was taught she was a sinner, unworthy of God's love unless she was obedient and pure. She lived in constant shame and fear.

Crisis: After years of striving to be good enough, Maria experienced a spiritual crisis. She could not maintain the perfection. She felt like a failure, worthless in God's eyes.

Discovery: Maria encountered Christian mysticismβ€”writings by Julian of Norwich, Thomas Merton, Meister Eckhart. She read: "God loves you unconditionally. You are already whole. You are made in God's image."

Transformation:

  • Recognized the shame was learned, not truth
  • Shifted from "I must earn God's love" to "God's love is already given"
  • Practiced contemplative prayerβ€”resting in divine presence without striving
  • Built internal worth: "I am sacred simply because I exist"

Outcome: After 2 years, Maria's spirituality transformed. She no longer lived in fear and shame. She practiced from love, not fear. She knew she was worthyβ€”not because she was perfect, but because she was beloved.

Maria: "I spent 40 years trying to earn God's love. I was exhausted and ashamed. Then I learned: God's love is not earned. It is given. I am already loved. I am already whole. That truth set me free."

Practice: Cultivating Mystical Internal Locus

Reflection Questions

  1. Do I believe I am already divine, or must I achieve divinity?
  2. Do I believe God's love is conditional or unconditional?
  3. Do I practice spirituality to earn worth or to express worth?
  4. Can I rest in being, or must I constantly strive?

Practices for Inherent Worth

1. Contemplative Rest

Sit in silence. Do not pray for anything. Do not strive. Just rest in divine presence. Notice: you are already here. You are already loved.

2. Affirmation of Inherent Divinity

"I am made in God's image. I am already whole. I am sacred simply because I exist."

3. Explore Mystical Texts

Read mystics from your tradition or others: Julian of Norwich, Rumi, Ramana Maharshi, Thich Nhat Hanh, Lao Tzu.

4. Practice Without Goal

Meditate, pray, or practice without trying to achieve anything. Just be. Notice what arises when you stop striving.

5. Recognize Divine Love

"I am loved unconditionally. I do not earn this love. I receive it. I am worthy simply because I exist."
