The Principle of Mentalism: "The All is Mind"
BY NICOLE LAU
"THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental." This opening declaration of The Kybalion is the first and most fundamental of the Seven Hermetic Principles. It states that reality itself is mental in natureβthat consciousness is not a byproduct of matter but the foundation from which all matter emerges. Understanding this principle transforms everything: how you perceive reality, how you create your experience, and how you engage with the universe.
This article explores the complete meaning of Mentalism, its philosophical and scientific foundations, and why recognizing the mental nature of reality is the key to all Hermetic practice.
The Principle Stated
The Kybalion's Teaching
"THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental. This Principle embodies the truth that 'All is Mind.' It explains that THE ALL (which is the Substantial Reality underlying all the outward manifestations and appearances which we know under the terms of 'The Material Universe'; the 'Phenomena of Life'; 'Matter'; 'Energy'; and, in short, all that is apparent to our material senses) is SPIRIT, which in itself is UNKNOWABLE and UNDEFINABLE, but which may be considered and thought of as AN UNIVERSAL, INFINITE, LIVING MIND."
Breaking It Down
"THE ALL" = The ultimate reality, the source, the infinite consciousness
"IS MIND" = Is fundamentally mental/consciousness in nature
"The Universe is Mental" = Everything that exists is a mental creation within THE ALL
What This Actually Means
Not Solipsism
Mentalism does NOT mean:
- "Reality is just in your head" (solipsism)
- "Nothing is real" (nihilism)
- "You can think anything into existence" (magical thinking)
What It DOES Mean
Mentalism means:
- Consciousness is primary: Mind precedes matter, not the reverse
- Reality is participatory: Consciousness shapes experience
- The universe is alive: Not dead matter but living mind
- We exist within THE ALL: Like thoughts within an infinite mind
The Three Levels of Mind
1. THE ALL (Universal Mind)
The infinite, eternal consciousness that is the source of all existence:
- Unknowable in its essence
- Infinite and eternal
- The "mind" within which the universe exists
- Analogous to: Brahman (Vedanta), Tao (Taoism), Ein Sof (Kabbalah)
2. Individual Minds (Human Consciousness)
Finite expressions of THE ALL:
- We are thoughts within the Universal Mind
- Individualized but not separate
- Capable of creating within our sphere
- Connected to THE ALL through consciousness
3. The Mental Universe (Manifest Reality)
The "material" world as mental creation:
- What we call "matter" is condensed thought
- Physical reality is THE ALL's mental creation
- Governed by mental laws (the other six principles)
- Responsive to consciousness
Philosophical Foundations
Idealism vs. Materialism
Materialism (mainstream science):
- Matter is primary, consciousness is secondary
- Mind emerges from brain activity
- Universe is dead, mechanical
- Consciousness is an epiphenomenon
Idealism (Hermetic philosophy):
- Consciousness is primary, matter is secondary
- Brain is the receiver, not the source of consciousness
- Universe is alive, mental
- Matter is condensed consciousness
Mentalism is radical idealism: Not just "mind matters" but "all is mind."
Historical Philosophical Support
Plato (428-348 BCE):
- The Forms (eternal ideas) are more real than physical objects
- Material world is a shadow of the ideal realm
- Mind/soul is immortal, matter is temporary
Berkeley (1685-1753):
- "Esse est percipi" (To be is to be perceived)
- Objects exist as ideas in minds
- Ultimate reality is mental
Hegel (1770-1831):
- Absolute Spirit unfolds through history
- Reality is the self-realization of Mind
- Matter is externalized thought
Scientific Parallels
Quantum Physics and Consciousness
The Observer Effect:
- Observation affects quantum systems
- Consciousness appears to collapse wave functions
- Reality is participatory, not objective
Max Planck (founder of quantum theory):
"I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness."
John Wheeler (physicist):
"The universe is a participatory universe." Observers are not outside but integral to reality.
The Hard Problem of Consciousness
Materialist neuroscience cannot explain:
- How physical brain activity creates subjective experience (qualia)
- Why there is "something it is like" to be conscious
- The unity of consciousness despite distributed brain activity
Mentalism's answer: Consciousness doesn't emerge from matter because consciousness is primary. The brain doesn't create consciousness; it focuses/filters it.
Implications of Mentalism
1. Reality is Malleable
If reality is mental, it can be influenced by mind:
- Not arbitrarily (there are laws)
- But through understanding mental principles
- Thoughts shape experience more than we realize
- Consciousness is creative, not just receptive
2. We Are Connected
If all minds exist within THE ALL:
- Separation is illusion
- We are individualized but not isolated
- Collective consciousness is real
- What affects one affects all (at some level)
3. Death is Not the End
If consciousness is primary:
- Mind doesn't depend on brain for existence
- Physical death is transition, not annihilation
- Consciousness continues (in some form)
- We are eternal as expressions of THE ALL
4. The Universe is Alive
If THE ALL is living mind:
- The universe is not dead mechanism but living organism
- Everything has some degree of consciousness
- Nature is intelligent, not random
- We live within a conscious cosmos
Mentalism and the Other Six Principles
Mentalism is the foundation; the other six principles describe how the mental universe operates:
Correspondence: Mental patterns repeat across levels
Vibration: Mental energy vibrates at different frequencies
Polarity: Mental states have opposites
Rhythm: Mental states flow in cycles
Cause & Effect: Mental causes produce effects
Gender: Mental creation requires masculine and feminine principles
All six depend on the first: if reality weren't mental, these principles wouldn't apply.
Practical Applications
1. Conscious Creation
If reality is mental, your thoughts participate in creating your experience:
- Not magically, but through mental laws
- Persistent thought patterns shape reality
- Changing mind changes experience
Practice: Monitor your habitual thoughts. What mental patterns are you reinforcing? What reality are you creating?
2. Mental Discipline
If mind is primary, mastering your mind is essential:
- Meditation: observing and directing thought
- Concentration: focusing mental energy
- Visualization: using mental imagery deliberately
Practice: Daily meditation to develop mental mastery. Start with 10 minutes of focused attention.
3. Reframing Reality
If experience is mental, you can change experience by changing perspective:
- Same situation, different interpretation = different experience
- Meaning is assigned by mind, not inherent in events
- You have more power than you think
Practice: When facing challenges, ask: "How else could I interpret this? What meaning am I assigning?"
4. Connecting to THE ALL
If you exist within Universal Mind, you can consciously connect:
- Through meditation, prayer, contemplation
- By recognizing your true nature as consciousness
- By aligning individual mind with Universal Mind
Practice: Contemplate: "I am a thought within THE ALL. What is THE ALL thinking through me?"
Common Misunderstandings
Misunderstanding 1: "I Can Think Anything Into Existence"
Correction: The mental universe has laws. You can't violate them through wishful thinking. But you CAN work with mental laws to shape experience.
Misunderstanding 2: "Physical Reality Doesn't Matter"
Correction: The physical plane is real within the mental universe. It's mental in nature but still governed by laws. Spiritual bypassing (ignoring physical needs) misses the point.
Misunderstanding 3: "My Individual Mind Creates Everything"
Correction: THE ALL creates the universe. Your individual mind creates within your sphere of influence. You're co-creator, not sole creator.
The Constant Unification Perspective
Mentalism appears across traditions because it describes reality's actual structure:
Vedanta: "Brahman (consciousness) is the only reality"
Buddhism: "Mind precedes all phenomena"
Taoism: "The Tao (which is beyond form) creates all forms"
Quantum Physics: "Consciousness collapses the wave function"
These are not different beliefs but different calculation methods revealing the same constant: consciousness is primary, matter is derivative.
Meditation: Experiencing Mentalism
The "I Am" Meditation (15 minutes)
Step 1: Settle (3 min)
- Sit comfortably, close eyes
- Breathe naturally, relax body
- Let thoughts settle
Step 2: Observe Mind (5 min)
- Notice thoughts arising and passing
- Don't engage, just observe
- Recognize: "I am aware of thoughts, therefore I am not thoughts"
Step 3: Rest as Awareness (5 min)
- Shift attention from thoughts to the awareness observing them
- Rest as pure consciousness
- This awareness is your true natureβmind itself
Step 4: Expand (2 min)
- Recognize this awareness is not separate from THE ALL
- Your individual mind exists within Universal Mind
- Feel the connection
Conclusion: The Foundation of All
The Principle of Mentalism is not just the first of seven principlesβit's the foundation upon which all others rest. If you truly understand that "THE ALL IS MIND," everything changes:
- You recognize your power as a conscious being
- You understand that reality is participatory, not fixed
- You see yourself as connected to all existence through consciousness
- You realize that mastering your mind is mastering your reality
The universe is not dead matter floating in empty space. It is living mind, infinite consciousness, THE ALL thinking itself into existence moment by moment. And youβyour awareness, your consciousness, your mindβare an integral part of that cosmic thought.
As above (THE ALL's mind), so below (your individual mind). As within (consciousness), so without (manifest reality). The mental universe awaits your conscious participation.
