Seven Hermetic Principles: Universal Laws Explained
You want to understand how the universe actually works. You want the operating system of reality. You want the laws that govern everything from atoms to galaxies to your own life.
The Seven Hermetic Principles are those laws - ancient wisdom that modern physics is only now beginning to validate. These aren't beliefs or theories. They're observable patterns that repeat across all levels of existence.
This is your complete guide to the Seven Hermetic Principles and how to use them.
Where Do the Seven Hermetic Principles Come From?
The Seven Hermetic Principles originate from Hermetic philosophy, attributed to Hermes Trismegistus - the legendary "Thrice-Great Hermes," a synthesis of Greek Hermes and Egyptian Thoth.
The source text is the Emerald Tablet, an ancient cryptic document that contains the essence of Hermetic wisdom. Later, these principles were codified and explained in The Kybalion (1908), which made Hermetic philosophy accessible to modern seekers.
The Seven Hermetic Principles
1. The Principle of Mentalism
"THE ALL IS MIND; The Universe is Mental."
Consciousness is primary. The universe is a mental creation. Your thoughts create your experience. Mind is the builder.
Practical Application: Your thoughts shape your reality - choose them consciously. Visualization and mental imagery are real creative forces.
2. The Principle of Correspondence
"As above, so below; as below, so above."
Patterns repeat at every scale. The macrocosm mirrors the microcosm. Your inner world corresponds to your outer world.
Practical Application: Study yourself to understand the universe. Your external reality reflects your internal state.
3. The Principle of Vibration
"Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates."
Everything is energy in motion. Matter, thought, emotion - all are vibrations at different frequencies.
Practical Application: Raise your vibration through joy, gratitude, love. Match the frequency of what you want.
4. The Principle of Polarity
"Everything is Dual; everything has poles."
Opposites are identical in nature, different in degree. Hot and cold are the same thing at different points on the scale.
Practical Application: You can transmute negative to positive - they're the same pole at different degrees.
5. The Principle of Rhythm
"Everything flows; everything has its tides."
Everything moves in cycles - pendulum swings, seasons, breath. Rhythm compensates.
Practical Application: Accept natural cycles. When you're in a low phase, know the high is coming.
6. The Principle of Cause and Effect
"Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause."
Nothing happens by chance. You are either a cause (creator) or an effect (reactor).
Practical Application: Take responsibility - you are creating your reality. Be a cause, not an effect.
7. The Principle of Gender
"Gender is in everything."
Masculine (active, projective) and feminine (receptive, nurturing) principles exist in all things. Creation requires both.
Practical Application: Balance your inner masculine and feminine energies. Manifestation requires both intention and allowing.
How to Use the Seven Hermetic Principles
For manifestation, use all seven principles together:
- Mentalism: Hold clear mental image of what you want
- Correspondence: Align inner state with desired outer reality
- Vibration: Match the frequency of your desire
- Polarity: Transmute doubt into faith
- Rhythm: Work with natural timing
- Cause and Effect: Take action - be the cause
- Gender: Balance masculine action with feminine receptivity

You Are the Living Principle
The Seven Hermetic Principles aren't separate from you - they're operating through you right now.
Your mind creates your reality (Mentalism). Your inner world mirrors your outer world (Correspondence). Your thoughts vibrate (Vibration). You experience opposites (Polarity). Your life moves in cycles (Rhythm). Your actions create effects (Cause and Effect). You contain both masculine and feminine (Gender).
You are not learning the principles. You are remembering what you already are.
Bring the Seven Hermetic Principles into your daily practice with our Seven Hermetic Principles Tapestry and Hermetic Principles Journal.
When we truly embody these universal laws, we see them reflected in every ritual we build around our intentions. The Sacred Space Cleanse becomes a tangible expression of the Principle of Vibration, clearing stagnant energy to make room for higher frequencies. The 40 Manifestation Rituals walk us step-by-step through the interplay of Mentalism, Cause and Effect, and Gender as we weave intention with action and receptivity. And the 13 New Moon Rituals honor the Principle of Rhythm, aligning our personal creation cycles with the moon's eternal tides.
