The Greater Ritual of the Pentagram: Advanced Elemental Work

BY NICOLE LAU

Once you've mastered the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP), you're ready for its more powerful sibling: the Greater Ritual of the Pentagram (GRP).

Where the LBRP clears and protects, the Greater Ritual actively invokes or banishes specific elemental forces. It's a precision tool for working with Fire, Water, Air, and Earth energies in ceremonial magic.

This is not a daily practiceβ€”it's a working ritual used when you need to call upon or dismiss elemental power for specific magical purposes.

Lesser vs Greater: What's the Difference?

The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP):

  • Uses one type of pentagram (banishing Earth)
  • Clears all energies equally
  • Creates general protection
  • Safe for daily use
  • Beginner-friendly

The Greater Ritual of the Pentagram (GRP):

  • Uses four different pentagrams (one for each element)
  • Invokes or banishes specific elemental forces
  • Creates targeted magical effects
  • Used for specific workings, not daily practice
  • Requires understanding of elemental theory

Think of the LBRP as a general cleanse, and the GRP as a surgical strike.

The Four Elements in Magic

Before performing the Greater Ritual, you need to understand what you're invoking:

πŸ”₯ Fire (South)

Qualities: Hot, dry, active, transformative
Magical Uses: Passion, courage, willpower, destruction, purification, energy
Divine Name: ELOHIM (El-Oh-HEEM)
Archangel: Michael
Color: Red

πŸ’§ Water (West)

Qualities: Cold, moist, receptive, flowing
Magical Uses: Emotion, intuition, healing, love, dreams, psychic work
Divine Name: EL (El)
Archangel: Gabriel
Color: Blue

🌬️ Air (East)

Qualities: Hot, moist, active, intellectual
Magical Uses: Communication, learning, travel, clarity, new beginnings
Divine Name: YHVH (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh)
Archangel: Raphael
Color: Yellow

🌍 Earth (North)

Qualities: Cold, dry, receptive, stable
Magical Uses: Grounding, manifestation, prosperity, stability, physical health
Divine Name: AGLA (Ah-Gah-LAH)
Archangel: Uriel
Color: Green or earthy tones

The Four Types of Pentagrams

Each element has its own invoking and banishing pentagram. The difference is in the starting point and direction of the tracing.

Invoking vs Banishing

Invoking pentagrams: Draw toward the elemental point (calling the energy in)
Banishing pentagrams: Draw away from the elemental point (sending the energy out)

The Elemental Points on the Pentagram

Imagine a pentagram with one point up:

  • Top point: Spirit
  • Upper right: Water
  • Lower right: Fire
  • Lower left: Earth
  • Upper left: Air

How to Draw Each Pentagram

Invoking Earth: Start at top (Spirit), draw down to lower left (Earth), continue around
Banishing Earth: Start at lower left (Earth), draw up to top (Spirit), continue around

Invoking Air: Start at top (Spirit), draw down to upper left (Air), continue around
Banishing Air: Start at upper left (Air), draw up to top (Spirit), continue around

Invoking Water: Start at top (Spirit), draw down to upper right (Water), continue around
Banishing Water: Start at upper right (Water), draw up to top (Spirit), continue around

Invoking Fire: Start at top (Spirit), draw down to lower right (Fire), continue around
Banishing Fire: Start at lower right (Fire), draw up to top (Spirit), continue around

Note: "Continue around" means completing the pentagram in the standard order: top β†’ lower right β†’ upper left β†’ upper right β†’ lower left β†’ back to starting point.

The Greater Ritual: Step-by-Step (Invoking Version)

Preparation:

  • Perform the LBRP first to clear the space
  • Know which element(s) you're invoking and why
  • Have your wand, athame, or use your finger

Part 1: Qabalistic Cross

Perform the Qabalistic Cross as in the LBRP:

"ATAH... MALKUTH... VE-GEBURAH... VE-GEDULAH... LE-OLAHM, AMEN."

Part 2: The Elemental Pentagrams

Go to the East (Air). Draw the invoking Air pentagram in yellow light.

Thrust through the center and vibrate:

"YHVH" (Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh)

Make the sign of the element (for Air: arms raised in a V, palms forward).

Turn to the South (Fire). Draw the invoking Fire pentagram in red light.

Thrust through and vibrate:

"ELOHIM" (El-Oh-HEEM)

Make the sign of Fire (arms raised overhead in a triangle, fingertips touching).

Turn to the West (Water). Draw the invoking Water pentagram in blue light.

Thrust through and vibrate:

"EL" (El)

Make the sign of Water (arms crossed over chest, hands on opposite shoulders).

Turn to the North (Earth). Draw the invoking Earth pentagram in green light.

Thrust through and vibrate:

"AGLA" (Ah-Gah-LAH)

Make the sign of Earth (arms extended downward in a V, palms down).

Return to the East, completing the circle.

Part 3: The Archangels

Stand in the center, arms outstretched, and invoke the four archangels as in the LBRP:

"Before me, RAPHAEL... Behind me, GABRIEL... On my right hand, MICHAEL... On my left hand, URIEL..."

"For about me flames the Pentagram, and in the column shines the Six-Rayed Star."

Part 4: Closing Qabalistic Cross

Repeat the Qabalistic Cross to seal the ritual.

When to Use the Greater Ritual

Invoking Greater Ritual:

  • Before elemental magic (e.g., invoking Fire for a passion spell)
  • To charge talismans with elemental energy
  • To attune yourself to a specific element for meditation or pathworking
  • To call elemental forces into your ritual space

Banishing Greater Ritual:

  • After elemental work to dismiss the forces
  • To remove excess elemental energy (e.g., too much Fire causing anger)
  • To balance yourself if one element is dominating
  • To close a working and return to neutral

Working with Individual Elements

You don't have to invoke all four elements. You can perform the Greater Ritual for just one element:

Example: Invoking Fire for Courage

  1. Perform the Qabalistic Cross
  2. Go to the South
  3. Draw the invoking Fire pentagram in red
  4. Vibrate "ELOHIM"
  5. Make the Fire sign
  6. Invoke Archangel Michael: "MICHAEL, bring me the courage of Fire!"
  7. Meditate on the Fire energy filling you
  8. When done, perform the banishing Fire pentagram to release excess energy
  9. Close with the Qabalistic Cross

Safety and Balance

Important: What you invoke, you must banish.

If you invoke Fire, you must banish Fire when you're done. Otherwise, you'll carry excess elemental energy, which can cause imbalance:

  • Too much Fire: Anger, aggression, burnout
  • Too much Water: Emotional overwhelm, lethargy
  • Too much Air: Scattered thoughts, anxiety, disconnection
  • Too much Earth: Stagnation, stubbornness, heaviness

Always close your workings properly.

The Greater Ritual as Training

Beyond its practical uses, the Greater Ritual trains you to:

  • Understand elemental theory deeply
  • Visualize different colored pentagrams
  • Work with precision and intention
  • Sense and direct elemental energies
  • Build relationships with the archangels

It's a foundational skill for all advanced ceremonial work.

Final Thoughts

The Greater Ritual of the Pentagram is a step up from the LBRPβ€”more powerful, more precise, and more demanding.

It's not a daily practice, but a working tool for when you need to call upon the raw forces of Fire, Water, Air, or Earth.

Master it, and you'll have the ability to shape elemental energy with surgical precision.
