Dragon Boat Altar: Zongzi, Mugwort, and Dragon Symbols

BY NICOLE LAU

Creating a Dragon Boat Festival altar is an act of invoking dragon protection, honoring Qu Yuan, and creating a sacred space for warding off negativity. Unlike altars dedicated to beauty or abundance, a Dragon Boat altar is powerful, protective, and yang-energized—it's a fortress of spiritual defense and a portal to dragon wisdom. Whether you're practicing solo or gathering with family, the altar serves as a focal point for protection rituals, a shrine to the dragon, and a declaration that you are guarded by ancient, cosmic forces.

The Purpose of a Dragon Boat Altar

A Dragon Boat altar serves as:

  • A protection shrine: Creating a sacred space that wards off evil and negativity.
  • A dragon portal: Connecting to dragon energy and invoking dragon guardianship.
  • A memorial to Qu Yuan: Honoring the poet-patriot and the values of loyalty and integrity.
  • A ritual workspace: Where you perform protection spells, divination, and offerings.
  • A yang energy anchor: Grounding and directing the powerful yang energy of the fifth month.

Core Symbols and Tools for a Dragon Boat Altar

1. Dragon Image or Figurine (Essential)

The dragon is the heart of the altar:

  • A dragon statue (ceramic, jade, metal, or wood)
  • A dragon painting or scroll
  • A dragon mask or head
  • Multiple dragons (representing the Nine Dragons) if desired

Place the dragon in a position of honor, facing the entrance to guard your space.

2. Zongzi (Sticky Rice Dumplings)

Zongzi represent:

  • Offerings to Qu Yuan and ancestors
  • Protection and nourishment
  • The binding of negative energy
  • Family unity and tradition

Place fresh zongzi on the altar as offerings, or use decorative zongzi replicas.

3. Mugwort and Calamus Bundles

Fresh or dried bundles of these protective herbs:

  • Mugwort (艾草): Yang protection, warding off evil
  • Calamus (菖蒲): Purification, clarity, peace

Tie them with red string and place them on the altar or hang them above it.

4. Red and Gold Candles

Fire represents yang energy and the dragon's power:

  • Red candles: Protection, vitality, warding off evil
  • Gold candles: Dragon energy, blessings, prosperity

Use multiple candles to create a strong yang presence.

5. Five-Colored Silk Threads

Drape or arrange five-colored threads (red, yellow, blue, white, black) on the altar:

  • Representing the five elements
  • Creating elemental balance
  • Symbolizing comprehensive protection

6. Incense

Burn protective and purifying incense:

  • Sandalwood (purification, sacredness)
  • Dragon's blood (power, protection)
  • Mugwort (warding, protection)
  • Frankincense (spiritual elevation)

7. Water Bowl

A bowl of clean water represents:

  • The dragon's domain (water)
  • Purity and cleansing
  • The Miluo River where Qu Yuan drowned

Change the water daily to keep energy fresh.

8. Offerings

Traditional Dragon Boat Festival offerings:

  • Zongzi: The primary offering
  • Rice wine: Libation for the dragon and Qu Yuan
  • Fresh fruit: Abundance and gratitude
  • Tea: Respect and hospitality
  • Realgar wine (symbolic only, due to toxicity): Protection against the Five Poisons

9. Images of the Five Poisons (Optional)

Some altars include images of the Five Poisons (snake, scorpion, centipede, toad, spider) as apotropaic magic—by depicting them, you neutralize their power.

10. Qu Yuan Image or Poetry (Optional)

Honor the poet-patriot:

  • A portrait or image of Qu Yuan
  • A copy of his poetry (especially Li Sao)
  • A scroll with his famous lines

Altar Layout and Design

There's no single "correct" way to arrange a Dragon Boat altar, but here's a suggested layout:

Center

  • Dragon statue or image (facing the entrance)
  • Incense burner
  • Water bowl

Left Side (East - Dragon Direction)

  • Red candles
  • Mugwort bundle
  • Five-colored threads

Right Side (West - Balance)

  • Gold candles
  • Calamus bundle
  • Qu Yuan image or poetry

Front

  • Offerings (zongzi, fruit, wine, tea)
  • Five Poisons images (if using)

Back

  • Red altar cloth with gold dragon embroidery (if available)
  • Additional dragon imagery or scrolls

Activating Your Dragon Boat Altar

Once your altar is set up, activate it with this ritual:

  1. Cleanse the space: Burn mugwort or sage to clear negative energy.
  2. Light the candles and incense, saying: "我点燃这火,点燃这香,以纪念端午节,以尊敬龙神。(I light this fire, I light this incense, to commemorate the Dragon Boat Festival, to honor the dragon deity.)"
  3. Invoke the dragon: Face the dragon image, bow three times, and say: "龙神在上,我呼唤您。请降临此坛,请保护此家。以您之力,驱魔除邪。以您之智,指引迷津。以您之福,降临我家。(Dragon deity above, I call upon you. Please descend to this altar, please protect this home. With your power, drive away demons and evil. With your wisdom, guide the lost. With your blessings, descend upon my home.)"
  4. Make offerings: Place zongzi, pour wine, and say: "我以粽子、美酒、鲜果供奉龙神和屈原。请接受我的敬意。(I offer zongzi, fine wine, and fresh fruit to the dragon deity and Qu Yuan. Please accept my respect.)"
  5. Declare your intention: "此坛是我的保护之地,我的龙之门。在此,我工作保护魔法,尊敬传统,呼唤龙力。端午吉祥!(This altar is my place of protection, my dragon portal. Here I work protection magic, honor tradition, and invoke dragon power. Blessed Dragon Boat Festival!)"

Using Your Altar During Dragon Boat Festival

During the festival (and throughout the fifth lunar month), use your altar to:

  • Make daily offerings: Fresh zongzi, tea, incense
  • Perform protection rituals: Cast spells, hang herbs, tie five-colored threads
  • Divine: Use I Ching, dragon oracle, or other divination methods
  • Meditate: Sit before the altar and connect with dragon energy
  • Honor Qu Yuan: Read his poetry, reflect on loyalty and integrity
  • Invoke blessings: Ask the dragon for protection, wisdom, and good fortune

Modern Additions to the Dragon Boat Altar

  • Photos of loved ones: Asking for dragon protection for family
  • Protective talismans: Chinese characters for protection (保佑), safety (平安), or blessing (福)
  • Crystals: Red jasper, tiger's eye, jade, obsidian
  • Drum or gong: Representing the dragon boat drum, used to invoke yang energy

Maintaining Your Altar

  • Keep it energized: Light candles and incense regularly, refresh offerings
  • Change water daily: Keep the dragon's water fresh and pure
  • Engage actively: An altar is most powerful when used frequently
  • Seasonal transition: After the fifth month, you can transition the altar or maintain it year-round for ongoing dragon protection
  • Dismantle mindfully: If you take it down, thank the dragon, thank Qu Yuan, and release the energy with gratitude

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
