The concept of a universal repository containing the complete record of every thought, word, action, and experience in human history appears across multiple esoteric traditions. If the universe is an informational field, how does a human being access it? The brain, in this model, does not generate consciousness but acts as a receiver or transceiver, tuning into different frequencies of the universal informational field.
When the brain is operating in the beta wave frequencies of ordinary waking consciousness, it is tuned to the immediate physical environment and the tasks of survival and social interaction. When the brain shifts into theta and delta frequencies — the states achieved in deep meditation, hypnagogia, and shamanic trance — the receiver tunes to a different bandwidth. In this state, the non-local information of the quantum field (the Akashic Records) becomes accessible to human perception, usually translating itself into the language the mind can understand: visual imagery (the metaphor of the library or the book), auditory messages, or sudden, fully-formed blocks of knowing.
