Algiz Rune Meditation: Connecting with Your Divine Guardian & Sacred Protection
Share
By Nicole Lau
Algiz (ᛉ) is the rune of divine protection — of the guardian that stands between you and harm, of the connection to the higher powers that watch over those who are aligned with the sacred. To meditate with Algiz is to consciously connect with this divine guardianship: to feel the presence of your guardian, to activate the protective field that is always available to you, and to align yourself with the sacred powers that are your birthright as a being of the cosmos. This is not a passive meditation; Algiz asks you to actively reach upward, to invoke, to claim the protection that is yours.
This meditation is particularly powerful for: connecting with your personal guardian spirit (fylgja), activating divine protection during periods of genuine danger or vulnerability, healing the sense of being unprotected or abandoned by the divine, developing the felt sense of sacred guardianship as a constant presence in your life, and any practice that involves working with protective energy.
Before You Begin
Light a white or silver candle. Cleanse your space with smoke or sound — Algiz works best in a purified environment. If you have representations of your guardian spirits, ancestors, or deities, place them before you. Have a bowl of clean water nearby. If you have an Algiz rune stone or amulet, hold it in your dominant hand — the hand that reaches upward toward the divine.
Take three purifying breaths — inhale deeply, exhale completely, releasing any sense of threat, vulnerability, or spiritual isolation. You are about to connect with your guardian; arrive at this connection as clean and open as possible.
Part One: The Gesture of Algiz
Close your eyes. Slowly raise both arms above your head, palms facing outward — the physical gesture of Algiz, the arms reaching upward toward the divine, the body becoming the rune. Feel the stretch through your entire body: from the soles of your feet rooted in the earth, through your spine, through your arms, to your fingertips reaching toward the sky.
This gesture is both an invocation and a warding: you are reaching upward to receive divine protection, and simultaneously creating a field of protective energy around you with the shape of your body. Hold this position for as long as is comfortable, feeling the energy of Algiz activating in your body.
Then lower your arms slowly and rest your hands in your lap. The gesture has been made; the connection has been initiated. Now simply receive.
Part Two: Meeting Your Guardian
In your mind's eye, become aware of a presence above and behind you — your guardian. This may be a specific deity, an ancestor, an animal spirit, or simply a quality of luminous, protective presence that you cannot quite name. Do not force a specific form; allow whatever guardian is most present for you right now to make itself known.
Feel the quality of this presence: its warmth, its strength, its absolute commitment to your wellbeing. Your guardian has been with you always — you may not have always been aware of it, but it has never left. It is the presence that has guided you away from harm, that has placed the right people in your path at the right moments, that has protected you in ways you will never fully know.
Ask your guardian: "How have you been protecting me that I have not recognized? What protection is available to me right now that I have not been claiming?" Receive whatever comes — images, feelings, words, a quality of knowing. Your guardian communicates in the language of the heart rather than the language of the analytical mind.
Part Three: The Protective Field
With your guardian present, feel a field of protective energy forming around you — beginning at your skin and extending outward in all directions, like a sphere of silver-white light. This is Algiz's protective field: not a wall that isolates you from the world, but a permeable membrane that allows what is aligned with your highest good to pass through while deflecting what is not.
Feel the quality of this field: its strength, its clarity, its intelligence. It knows what to allow and what to deflect; you do not need to manage it consciously. Simply feel it as a living, intelligent presence that is working on your behalf.
Now bring to mind any specific area of your life where you feel vulnerable or unprotected. Hold it within the protective field and ask Algiz: "What protection is needed here? What guardian energy is most relevant to this vulnerability?" Feel the field responding — strengthening in the area of vulnerability, bringing the specific quality of protection that is needed.
Part Four: The Fylgja
In Norse tradition, every person has a fylgja — a personal guardian spirit that accompanies them through life, often taking the form of an animal. The fylgja is not separate from you; it is an aspect of your own deeper nature, the part of you that is always connected to the divine and always working for your highest good.
Ask to meet your fylgja. In your mind's eye, allow an animal to appear — whatever comes, without judgment or preference. This animal is your fylgja: your personal guardian, your deeper nature in animal form. Spend a few moments with it. Feel its energy, its qualities, its specific form of protection. Ask it: "What do you want me to know? How can I work with you more consciously?"
The fylgja is always present; this meditation simply makes the connection conscious. After this meditation, you may begin to notice your fylgja's presence in your daily life — in the animals you encounter, in the qualities that arise in you when you most need them.
Part Five: The Algiz Galdr
With your guardian present and your protective field fully activated, begin the Galdr. Take a deep, clear breath. On the exhale, chant: "Alllll-giz" — clear, strong, upward-reaching. The “Al” should open your chest and throat; the “giz” should reach upward, like the rune's branches reaching toward the divine. Feel the sound creating a vibration in your protective field, strengthening and clarifying it.
Chant nine times. With each repetition, feel the protective field growing stronger, clearer, and more fully charged with divine guardianship. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of settled safety — the deep, unshakeable sense of being genuinely protected by something larger than yourself.
Part Six: Closing
After the Galdr, spend a few minutes simply resting in the presence of your guardian and the protective field. Feel the quality of Algiz's protection — not the anxious vigilance of someone who is afraid, but the calm confidence of someone who knows they are genuinely guarded.
Thank your guardian. Then take three grounding breaths and open your eyes. The protective field remains active; the guardian remains present. You carry Algiz's protection with you as you return to your ordinary life.
Algiz Meditation for Specific Situations
Before entering dangerous situations: A brief Algiz practice — the gesture, the invocation of your guardian, and three Galdr chants — before any situation that feels dangerous or spiritually vulnerable activates the protective field and consciously connects you to your guardian's presence.
For healing the sense of abandonment: If you carry a deep sense of being unprotected or abandoned by the divine, perform the full meditation daily for 21 days. The consistent practice of consciously connecting with your guardian gradually heals the wound of perceived abandonment and establishes the felt sense of divine protection as a constant reality.
For protecting others: Perform Part Three of this meditation with a specific person held in mind — a child, a loved one, someone in danger. Extend the protective field to include them, asking Algiz's guardianship to be active in their life as well as your own.
