Algiz: The Norse Rune of Divine Protection and How to Use It
Share
The Runes are not an alphabet in the modern sense. They are a magical system disguised as an alphabet. Originating among the Germanic and Norse peoples of Northern Europe, the Elder Futhark (the oldest form of the runic alphabet) consists of 24 symbols. In Old Norse, the word rún means “secret,” “whisper,” or “mystery.” According to myth, they were not invented by humans; they were discovered by Odin, the All-Father, who hung himself upside down from the World Tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days and nine nights, pierced by his own spear, in order to seize the wisdom of the Runes from the depths of the cosmos.
Because they were won through sacrifice, the Runes are not casual symbols. Each Rune is an ideogram — a visual representation of a specific, primal cosmic force. When you carve, draw, or wear a Rune, you are not writing a letter. You are invoking the specific force that the Rune represents.
Algiz: The Elk Sedge and the Divine Shield
When it comes to protection, one Rune stands above the rest: Algiz (also known as Elhaz). Visually, the symbol looks like an elk’s antlers reaching upward, a person standing with their arms raised to the sky, or the sedge grass that cuts the hand of anyone who tries to grasp it forcefully.
Algiz is the Rune of the divine shield. It does not provide the aggressive, weaponized defense of Thurisaz (the thorn), nor the absolute, frozen boundary of Isa (the ice). Algiz provides protection through connection. It is the channel between the human realm (Midgard) and the realm of the gods (Asgard). When you invoke Algiz, you are protected because you are linking your personal energy field to the vast, unshakeable stability of the divine.
The energy of Algiz is often described as a sanctuary. It wards off negative forces not by fighting them, but by elevating the practitioner’s frequency to a level where those lower frequencies simply cannot attach. It is the spiritual equivalent of moving to higher ground during a flood.
How to Use Runic Talismans
In the Norse tradition, magic (Seidr and Galdr) was deeply practical. Runes were carved into the hilts of swords for victory in battle, painted on the bows of ships for safe passage, and carved over the thresholds of homes for protection. The symbol must be made physical to ground its energy into the material world.
Today, working with Runes does not require carving them into wood or stone, though that is a powerful practice. The most common and effective modern method is the wearable talisman. When a Rune like Algiz is printed or embroidered on a piece of clothing, the garment itself becomes an active ward.
To activate a runic garment: Before wearing it for the first time, hold it in your hands. Trace the shape of the Rune with your finger. State clearly what you are commanding the symbol to do: “I activate this shield. I am closed to harm and open to wisdom. Only that which serves my highest good may cross this boundary.” When you put the garment on, visualize the shape of the Rune expanding to encase your entire aura.
