The Arc Reading: How to Track Trajectory and Direction of Movement in a Spread
Share
Most tarot readings are designed to capture a moment: where is the situation now, what are the relevant forces, what might happen next. They are snapshots — detailed pictures of the system at a specific point in time.
The Arc Reading is designed to capture something different: the system's trajectory — the direction and speed of its movement through the state space, the arc of its evolution over time rather than its position at any single moment.
Understanding trajectory is often more practically useful than understanding position. Knowing where you are is necessary but not sufficient. Knowing where you are going — and how fast, and whether the direction is actually where you want to go — is what enables deliberate navigation.
What Trajectory Analysis Means in Tarot
In systems science, trajectory analysis examines the path a system has traced through the state space and uses that path to infer where it is heading. This requires at minimum two data points — where the system was and where it is now — to establish direction. More data points enable more precise trajectory identification.
In tarot, trajectory analysis uses the structure of the spread itself to establish multiple positions across time, and reads the movement between those positions as the system's arc:
- What state was the system in before? (Foundation/Past cards)
- What state is it in now? (Present cards)
- What state is it moving toward? (Future/Outcome cards)
- What is the character of the movement? (The relationship between the states)
The character of the movement is what distinguishes the Arc Reading from standard outcome-focused reading. It is not just "what happens next" but "what kind of arc is this system on?"
The Three Trajectory Types
The systems approach identifies three primary trajectory patterns that appear in tarot readings. Each has a distinct systemic signature and calls for a different type of response.
1. Convergent Trajectory
A convergent trajectory is one moving toward a stable attractor — a state of resolution, completion, or equilibrium. The past-to-present-to-future arc describes a system narrowing toward a definite outcome, with the forces in the spread aligning toward a common direction.
Signs of convergent trajectory: the suit of the present card matches the suit of the outcome card; the numbers generally increase from past to future; attractor cards appear in outcome positions; there is coherence and consistency in the thematic content across the arc.
Convergent trajectories call for alignment and trust: the system is moving toward a clear destination. The appropriate response is to understand what the attractor represents and choose whether to support or modify the convergence.
2. Oscillating Trajectory
An oscillating trajectory is one moving between two or more states in a recurring pattern — the system is in a limit cycle, returning repeatedly to the same dynamic rather than resolving into a new configuration.
Signs of oscillating trajectory: similar cards appearing in both the past and future positions; alternating suit or energy types across the arc; cards from opposing ends of a spectrum appearing together; the future cards describe states similar to past states rather than new territory.
Oscillating trajectories call for pattern recognition: the system is looping, not resolving. The appropriate response is to identify what is maintaining the loop — the self-reinforcing belief, the unexamined dynamic, the pattern being repeated — and address it rather than continuing to manage the symptoms.
3. Phase Transition Trajectory
A phase transition trajectory is one moving through a threshold — the system is crossing a critical point and will emerge in a qualitatively new configuration. The arc describes not just movement but reorganization.
Signs of phase transition trajectory: high-energy transition cards (Tower, Death, Wheel, Hanged Man, Moon) appearing in the present or immediate future; dramatic discontinuity between the past and future states; the future cards describe states that are qualitatively different from — not just further along from — the past.
Phase transition trajectories call for release and readiness: the system is reorganizing. The appropriate response is not to prevent the transition but to navigate it well — releasing what belongs to the old configuration and positioning for what is emerging.
Conducting the Arc Reading
The Arc Reading uses a specifically designed five-card spread: Origin, Catalyst, Current Position, Velocity, and Horizon. Each position captures a different dimension of the trajectory:
- Origin: Where the system came from — the attractor that shaped the current dynamic
- Catalyst: What initiated the current movement — the force that disrupted the previous equilibrium
- Current Position: Where the system is in the state space right now
- Velocity: The speed and character of current movement — accelerating, decelerating, or holding
- Horizon: The next attractor state the current trajectory is aimed at
The complete Arc Reading spread — with full instructions, all five position interpretations, and an extended worked example with full trajectory analysis — is in 78 Cards, Infinite Paths: A Systems Approach to Tarot. 53 pages. Theory Series Vol. 3.
