When Good Timing Becomes Perfect Timing
You know to do love spells on Friday during Venus hours. You know to work with the waxing moon for attraction. But what if I told you there's a level beyond this—a way to choose timing so precise, so perfectly aligned, that your ritual becomes almost inevitable in its success?
This is electional astrology—the ancient art of choosing the optimal moment to begin any important endeavor. It's what medieval kings used to crown themselves, what Renaissance magicians used to consecrate talismans, and what modern practitioners use to time weddings, business launches, surgeries, and major magical workings.
Electional astrology isn't just "pick a good day." It's constructing a birth chart for your intention—choosing the exact moment when the cosmos aligns to support your goal with maximum power and minimum resistance.
Welcome to the fourth article in our Temporal Magic series. Today, we're going deep into astrological elections: what they are, how they work, the rules and principles, and how to elect perfect timing for your most important rituals and life events.
What is Electional Astrology?
The Concept:
Electional astrology (also called "elections" or "inceptional astrology") is the branch of astrology that determines the most auspicious time to begin an activity. The idea: the moment something begins determines its nature and outcome.
The Philosophy:
Just as a person born at a specific moment has a natal chart that describes their character and fate, anything begun at a specific moment has a "birth chart" that describes its character and fate.
- Start a business at a moment with Jupiter rising? The business will expand and prosper.
- Get married when Venus is afflicted by Saturn? The marriage will face restriction and coldness.
- Launch a website when Mercury is retrograde? Expect technical problems and miscommunication.
The Power:
While you can't choose your natal chart (you're born when you're born), you can choose the "natal chart" of your projects, rituals, and endeavors. This gives you tremendous power to shape outcomes.
The Difference: Elections vs. Transits vs. Progressions
Let's clarify the types of astrological timing:
Natal Astrology: Your birth chart—fixed, unchanging
Transit Astrology: Where planets are NOW and how they aspect your natal chart
Progressed Astrology: Your evolving chart over time
Electional Astrology: Choosing the best moment to START something new
Example:
- Natal: You were born with Venus in Scorpio (intense, passionate love nature)
- Transit: Venus is currently in Libra (good time for relationships in general)
- Election: You choose to get married when Venus is in Libra in the 7th house, trine Jupiter (perfect timing for a harmonious, expansive marriage)
The Core Principles of Electional Astrology
Principle 1: The Ascendant (Rising Sign) Matters Most
The Ascendant represents the beginning, the birth, the emergence. Choose an Ascendant that aligns with your goal.
Examples:
- Love spell: Libra or Taurus rising (Venus-ruled)
- Protection ritual: Aries or Scorpio rising (Mars-ruled)
- Money spell: Taurus or Capricorn rising (earth signs, material success)
Principle 2: The Moon is the Co-Ruler
After the Ascendant, the Moon is the most important factor. The Moon represents the flow, the emotional tone, the public reception.
Moon Considerations:
- Phase: Waxing for growth, waning for release
- Sign: Choose a sign that supports your goal
- Aspects: Avoid harsh aspects (squares, oppositions) to malefics (Mars, Saturn)
- Void of Course: NEVER elect during void of course Moon
Principle 3: Strengthen the Significator
The significator is the planet that rules your intention. Strengthen it by:
- Placing it in a strong house (1st, 10th, 11th)
- Putting it in its domicile or exaltation
- Giving it positive aspects (trines, sextiles) to benefics (Venus, Jupiter)
- Avoiding negative aspects to malefics (Mars, Saturn)
Significators by Goal:
- Love: Venus
- Money: Jupiter (expansion) or Venus (attraction)
- Career: Sun (authority) or Saturn (structure)
- Communication: Mercury
- Protection: Mars
- Spirituality: Neptune or Jupiter
Principle 4: Avoid Afflictions
Certain placements are universally bad for elections:
- Void of Course Moon
- Mercury retrograde (for new beginnings)
- Malefics (Mars, Saturn) in angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th)
- Harsh aspects to the Ascendant or Moon
- Planets in their detriment or fall
The Houses: Where to Place Your Planets
In electional astrology, house placement is crucial. Here's what each house governs:
1st House (Ascendant): The self, beginnings, vitality, appearance
2nd House: Money, possessions, values, resources
3rd House: Communication, siblings, short trips, learning
4th House (IC): Home, family, roots, real estate, endings
5th House: Creativity, romance, children, pleasure, gambling
6th House: Work, health, service, daily routines, pets
7th House (Descendant): Partnerships, marriage, contracts, open enemies
8th House: Transformation, death, sex, shared resources, occult
9th House: Higher learning, travel, philosophy, religion, publishing
10th House (Midheaven): Career, reputation, public life, authority
11th House: Friends, groups, hopes, wishes, social causes
12th House: Spirituality, secrets, hidden enemies, self-undoing, isolation
Angular Houses (1, 4, 7, 10): Most powerful—planets here have maximum impact
Succedent Houses (2, 5, 8, 11): Moderate power—stable, enduring
Cadent Houses (3, 6, 9, 12): Weakest—planets here have less impact
Planetary Dignities: Essential and Accidental
Essential Dignities (Sign Placement):
Domicile (Rulership): Planet in the sign it rules—strongest position
- Sun in Leo, Moon in Cancer, Mercury in Gemini/Virgo, Venus in Taurus/Libra, Mars in Aries/Scorpio, Jupiter in Sagittarius/Pisces, Saturn in Capricorn/Aquarius
Exaltation: Planet in its exalted sign—very strong, honored
- Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mercury in Virgo, Venus in Pisces, Mars in Capricorn, Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Libra
Detriment: Planet opposite its domicile—weakened, uncomfortable
- Sun in Aquarius, Moon in Capricorn, Mercury in Sagittarius/Pisces, Venus in Aries/Scorpio, Mars in Taurus/Libra, Jupiter in Gemini/Virgo, Saturn in Cancer/Leo
Fall: Planet opposite its exaltation—weakest, debilitated
- Sun in Libra, Moon in Scorpio, Mercury in Pisces, Venus in Virgo, Mars in Cancer, Jupiter in Capricorn, Saturn in Aries
Accidental Dignities (House Placement):
- Angular houses (1, 4, 7, 10): Strong
- Succedent houses (2, 5, 8, 11): Moderate
- Cadent houses (3, 6, 9, 12): Weak
The Aspects: Harmonious vs. Challenging
Benefic Aspects (Easy, Flowing):
- Trine (120°): Harmony, ease, natural talent
- Sextile (60°): Opportunity, cooperation, mild benefit
Malefic Aspects (Challenging, Dynamic):
- Square (90°): Tension, conflict, obstacles (but can motivate action)
- Opposition (180°): Polarity, awareness, external challenges
Neutral/Variable:
- Conjunction (0°): Fusion, intensity—benefic if with benefics, malefic if with malefics
In Elections:
- Seek trines and sextiles to benefics (Venus, Jupiter)
- Avoid squares and oppositions to malefics (Mars, Saturn)
- Conjunctions depend on the planets involved
Step-by-Step: How to Elect Perfect Timing
Step 1: Define Your Goal
Be specific. "I want love" is vague. "I want to attract a committed romantic partner" is specific.
Step 2: Identify the Significator
Which planet rules your goal? (Love = Venus, Money = Jupiter, etc.)
Step 3: Choose the Timeframe
When do you need this to happen? Next week? Next month? This gives you a window to work within.
Step 4: Check for Prohibitions
Eliminate times when:
- Mercury is retrograde (for new beginnings)
- The Moon is void of course
- Your significator is retrograde
- Major malefic transits are active
Step 5: Find Optimal Planetary Positions
Look for times when:
- Your significator is in domicile or exaltation
- Your significator is in a strong house (1st, 10th, 11th)
- Your significator has positive aspects to benefics
- The Moon is in a supportive sign and phase
Step 6: Choose the Ascendant
Select a rising sign that supports your goal and puts your significator in a strong house.
Step 7: Fine-Tune with Planetary Hours
Within your elected day and time, choose a planetary hour that matches your significator.
Step 8: Verify and Adjust
Double-check for any overlooked afflictions. Adjust as needed.

When to Hire a Professional Electional Astrologer
For major life events, consider hiring a professional:
Events Worth Professional Elections:
- Marriage (the chart of the marriage determines its fate)
- Business incorporation or launch
- Buying property or signing major contracts
- Surgery (elect to avoid Mars afflictions)
- Conception (if you have control over timing)
- Major magical consecrations or initiations
Why Hire a Pro:
Electional astrology is complex. A professional can navigate the nuances, balance competing factors, and find the optimal window you might miss.
The Limits of Electional Astrology
Reality Check:
Electional astrology is powerful, but it's not magic (well, it IS magic, but it's not omnipotent).
Limitations:
1. You can't override natal charts: If your natal chart shows challenges in relationships, a perfect wedding election helps but doesn't erase your patterns.
2. Perfect elections are rare: You might have to compromise. A "good enough" election is better than waiting forever for perfection.
3. Free will matters: Elections set the stage, but you still have to act. A perfect business launch election won't save a terrible business plan.
4. Timing windows are limited: Sometimes you can't wait for the perfect moment. Do the best you can within your constraints.
Your Electional Astrology Practice
This Week:
1. Choose one upcoming event or ritual
2. Identify the significator planet
3. Use astro.com to find a time when that planet is well-placed
4. Check the Moon phase and void of course times
5. Elect your timing and perform the work
6. Journal the results
Advanced Practice:
Start tracking major life events and their "birth charts." Notice patterns. Did you start your current job when Mercury was retrograde? (Communication problems?) Did you move into your home when the Moon was void? (Feeling unsettled?)
Conclusion: Timing is Everything
You wouldn't plant seeds in winter and expect them to grow. You wouldn't swim against a riptide and expect to make progress. So why would you start important endeavors when the cosmos is working against you?
Electional astrology is the art of planting seeds in spring, swimming with the current, and launching your ship when the wind is at your back.
It's not about controlling fate—it's about aligning with it.
In the next article, we'll explore the Void of Course Moon—the most important timing prohibition in all of magic and astrology.
