Bandhas ↔ Locks: Energy Regulation

BY NICOLE LAU

The Control Points of Ascension

As energy rises from base to crown, it encounters critical regulation points—places where energy can leak, stagnate, or be redirected. Yoga uses Bandhas (locks)—muscular contractions that seal energy and direct it upward. Taoist alchemy uses San Guan (three gates)—blockage points that must be opened for Qi to ascend. These are isomorphic energy regulation systems—different metaphors (locks vs. gates) for the same control points along the spine.

The Three Yogic Bandhas

What are Bandhas?

Bandha (Sanskrit: बन्ध) means "lock," "bind," or "seal." Bandhas are:

  • Muscular contractions at specific body points
  • Energy seals that prevent Prana from leaking downward
  • Directional controls that guide Kundalini upward through Sushumna
  • Used in pranayama and meditation to intensify energy

The Three Main Bandhas

1. Mula Bandha (Root Lock)

  • Location: Perineum, pelvic floor (between anus and genitals)
  • Technique: Contract and lift the pelvic floor muscles (like stopping urination)
  • Function: Seals Apana (downward energy), prevents energy leakage, awakens Kundalini
  • Chakra: Muladhara (root chakra)
  • Effect: Grounding, stability, foundation for upward energy flow

2. Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock)

  • Location: Lower abdomen, below navel
  • Technique: Pull the abdomen in and up toward the spine (after full exhalation)
  • Function: Lifts Prana upward, stimulates digestive fire (Agni), massages internal organs
  • Chakra: Manipura (solar plexus chakra)
  • Effect: Power, transformation, upward propulsion of energy

3. Jalandhara Bandha (Throat Lock)

  • Location: Throat, neck
  • Technique: Lower the chin toward the chest, lengthen the back of the neck
  • Function: Seals Prana in the upper body, prevents energy from escaping through the head prematurely
  • Chakra: Vishuddha (throat chakra)
  • Effect: Purification, containment, controlled release of energy to higher centers

Maha Bandha (Great Lock)

When all three bandhas are engaged simultaneously, it's called Maha Bandha (Great Lock). This creates maximum containment and upward pressure, intensifying Kundalini awakening.

The Three Taoist Gates (San Guan)

What are the Three Gates?

In Taoist inner alchemy, the San Guan (三關 Three Gates or Three Passes) are:

  • Blockage points along the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) on the back
  • Obstacles that prevent Qi from ascending smoothly
  • Must be opened through practice for Qi to complete the Microcosmic Orbit

The Three Gates

1. Weilu Guan (Tailbone Gate)

  • Location: Coccyx, tailbone, base of spine
  • Chinese: 尾閭關 (Weilu Guan)
  • Blockage: Physical tension, fear, survival issues, attachment to material world
  • Opening: Relaxation of pelvic floor, releasing fear, grounding practices
  • Corresponds to: Muladhara chakra area

2. Jiaji Guan (Mid-Back Gate)

  • Location: Between shoulder blades, opposite the heart (T5-T7 vertebrae)
  • Chinese: 夾脊關 (Jiaji Guan, "Squeeze Spine Gate")
  • Blockage: Emotional holding, heart protection, ego resistance, power struggles
  • Opening: Opening the heart, releasing emotional armor, surrendering ego
  • Corresponds to: Anahata (heart) to Manipura (solar plexus) transition

3. Yuzhen Guan (Jade Pillow Gate)

  • Location: Base of skull, occiput (where skull meets neck)
  • Chinese: 玉枕關 (Yuzhen Guan)
  • Blockage: Mental concepts, overthinking, duality, intellectual barriers
  • Opening: Quieting the mind, transcending thought, entering emptiness
  • Corresponds to: Ajna (third eye) to Sahasrara (crown) transition

The Isomorphic Mapping

Yogic Bandha Taoist Gate Location Function Convergence
Mula Bandha (root lock) Weilu Guan (tailbone gate) Base of spine, perineum/coccyx Foundation, prevents downward leakage, awakens base energy 92%
Uddiyana Bandha (abdominal lock) Jiaji Guan (mid-back gate) Navel/mid-back area Upward propulsion, emotional/ego transformation 85%
Jalandhara Bandha (throat lock) Yuzhen Guan (jade pillow gate) Throat/base of skull Containment, mental purification, gateway to higher consciousness 88%

High Convergence: Mula Bandha ↔ Weilu Guan (92%)

Mula Bandha: Root lock at perineum, contracts pelvic floor, seals Apana, awakens Kundalini at Muladhara.

Weilu Guan: Tailbone gate at coccyx, first obstacle in Qi ascent, must be opened to allow Qi to rise from Lower Dantian.

Both are at the base of the spine, both regulate foundational energy, both are the first critical point in upward energy movement. 92% convergence.

The Paradox: Locks vs. Gates

Here's the interesting difference:

  • Bandhas (locks): You engage/contract to seal and direct energy upward
  • Gates (guan): You open/release to allow energy to pass through

Opposite metaphors, same function: regulating energy flow at critical points.

The resolution: Bandhas create pressure that forces energy through blockages. Gates are the blockages that must yield to that pressure. Two sides of the same process.

The Energetic Function

Why These Three Points?

Both systems identify the same three critical points because they represent major transitions in the energy body:

  1. Base (Mula/Weilu): Transition from physical/material to energetic/subtle
  2. Middle (Uddiyana/Jiaji): Transition from personal power/ego to universal love/compassion
  3. Upper (Jalandhara/Yuzhen): Transition from mental/conceptual to spiritual/transcendent

These are the three major thresholds in spiritual ascent.

Practice Techniques

Engaging Bandhas (Yoga)

  1. Sit in meditation posture (lotus or easy pose)
  2. Engage Mula Bandha: Contract pelvic floor, hold gently
  3. Engage Uddiyana Bandha: After exhale, pull abdomen in and up
  4. Engage Jalandhara Bandha: Lower chin, lengthen neck
  5. Hold all three (Maha Bandha) during breath retention
  6. Release slowly, observe energy movement

Opening Gates (Qigong)

  1. Stand or sit in meditation
  2. Focus on Weilu: Relax tailbone, visualize gate opening, Qi begins to rise
  3. Focus on Jiaji: Relax mid-back, open heart, Qi passes through
  4. Focus on Yuzhen: Relax base of skull, quiet mind, Qi enters head
  5. Complete the orbit: Qi flows over crown, down front, returns to Lower Dantian

Different techniques (contraction vs. relaxation), same goal: facilitate upward energy movement through critical points.

Common Challenges

At the Base (Mula/Weilu)

  • Physical: Pelvic tension, hemorrhoids, sexual dysfunction
  • Energetic: Energy leaks downward, can't build pressure for ascent
  • Psychological: Fear, survival anxiety, material attachment
  • Solution: Grounding practices, releasing fear, proper engagement of pelvic floor

At the Middle (Uddiyana/Jiaji)

  • Physical: Mid-back pain, digestive issues, heart problems
  • Energetic: Energy stagnates at solar plexus or heart, can't rise higher
  • Psychological: Ego resistance, emotional armor, power struggles
  • Solution: Heart-opening practices, surrendering control, emotional release

At the Upper (Jalandhara/Yuzhen)

  • Physical: Neck tension, headaches, thyroid issues
  • Energetic: Energy escapes prematurely, can't reach crown properly
  • Psychological: Overthinking, mental loops, conceptual barriers
  • Solution: Meditation, quieting mind, transcending thought

Conclusion: One Path, Three Thresholds

Yogic Bandhas and Taoist Gates are isomorphic energy regulation systems:

  • Mula Bandha = Weilu Guan = Base threshold
  • Uddiyana Bandha = Jiaji Guan = Middle threshold
  • Jalandhara Bandha = Yuzhen Guan = Upper threshold

Different metaphors (locks vs. gates), different techniques (contract vs. release), same critical points: the three major thresholds in spiritual ascent.

This is Constant Unification.

The path is one. The thresholds are three. The regulation converges.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
