Beltane Altar: Fire, Fertility, and the Peak of Spring
Share
Beltane falls on May 1st, halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice, and it is the most exuberant and most life-affirming of all the Sabbats — the festival of fire, fertility, passion, and the peak of spring's creative energy. Where Ostara celebrated the arrival of spring, Beltane celebrates spring at its height: the earth is fully alive, the flowers are in full bloom, the days are long and warm, and the energy of life, love, and creative expression is at its most potent and most irresistible.
Beltane is the great fire festival of the Celtic year — the night on which the Beltane fires were lit on the hilltops, the cattle were driven between the fires for purification and blessing, and the community came together to celebrate the fullness of life and the power of the creative force. The Beltane altar carries this fire energy: it is the most passionate and most vibrant altar of the year, filled with the colors and symbols of fire, fertility, and the full expression of life's creative power.
Colors
The Beltane altar works with red, orange, yellow, and bright green — the colors of fire and the peak of spring's vitality. Red for passion, desire, and the fire of life at its most intense. Orange for the creative fire and the joy of full expression. Yellow for the sun at its growing strength. Bright green for the earth at its most fertile and most alive.
Symbols and Objects
Beltane symbols include a central candle or fire for the Beltane flame; flowers in full bloom, especially hawthorn (the May tree); ribbons in the Beltane colors for the maypole energy; a chalice and wand for the sacred union of feminine and masculine; and fresh herbs for the season's peak vitality.
Crystals
Beltane crystals include carnelian for the creative fire and passionate energy of the season; rose quartz for love and the heart's full opening; sunstone for the solar energy at its growing peak; and garnet for the vital force and the passionate intensity of Beltane's energy.
Plants and Botanicals
Beltane botanicals include hawthorn blossoms for the sacred May tree; rose for love and passion; honeysuckle for the sweetness of life at its peak; and woodruff for the traditional Beltane wine and the joy of the season.
