The Blank Slate Ritual: Clear the Ground and Begin Again with New Moon Tarot
Share
Before any genuine seeding can occur, the ground must be cleared. This is not metaphor; it is practical energetic reality. The intentions you plant at the new moon are competing with everything that is still occupying the energetic field of your life from the previous cycle — the unresolved completions, the lingering concerns, the half-finished energetic threads of what the previous month held. The Blank Slate ritual is the practice of deliberately, consciously clearing this ground so that what is planted next can actually grow.
The Blank Slate is the first of the thirteen new moon tarot rituals, and it is the most foundational: everything that follows — every seed intention, every desire, every new beginning — is planted in the ground that the Blank Slate clears. Without this clearing, the other new moon rituals are less effective, because the ground is still occupied by what has not been completed and released from the previous cycle. The Blank Slate is the practice of genuinely clearing that ground and arriving at the actual blank slate from which genuine new beginning is possible.
What the Blank Slate Is Not
The Blank Slate is not a practice of forgetting or denial. It does not pretend that what has come before did not happen, or that the challenges and complexities of the life have been magically resolved by the new moon's arrival. It is a practice of deliberate, conscious clearing: acknowledging what the previous cycle held, honoring what needs to be completed, and then — with intention — setting it aside in order to arrive at the genuine open ground from which the next cycle can begin.
The difference between pretending a blank slate exists and actually creating one is the difference between bypassing what is present and genuinely working with it. The Blank Slate ritual does the latter: it works directly with what remains from the previous cycle in order to create the actual cleared ground from which the next intention can be planted with genuine effectiveness.
Ritual Setup
Candle: Black for the new moon's fertile darkness and the clearing of what has been; or white for the blank page of genuine new beginning. Some practitioners use both: a black candle for the clearing and a white candle for the blank slate that the clearing creates.
Crystals: Black tourmaline or obsidian for the clearing of what remains from the previous cycle; selenite for the purification of the energetic field; clear quartz for the clarity of the blank slate. Arrange them in a clearing formation: the black stones at the edges, the clear quartz at the center, to represent the movement from the previous cycle's residue to the clear center of genuine new beginning.
Optional: A bowl of water with sea salt for the energetic clearing of the space; a piece of blank paper and a pen for the writing that is central to this ritual.
The Blank Slate Tarot Spread
Card 1 — What remains from the previous cycle: What is still occupying the energetic ground from the lunar cycle just completed? What has not yet been fully released, resolved, or completed? This card names the specific residue that most needs to be cleared before the new cycle's seeding can begin.
Card 2 — What needs to be acknowledged before release: What does the previous cycle's residue most need to be acknowledged for before it can be genuinely released? The Blank Slate ritual, like all genuine release work, honors before it clears: this card names what deserves acknowledgment before being set aside.
Card 3 — What is genuinely complete: What from the previous cycle is fully complete and ready to be released? This card names the completion that the new moon is confirming — the thing that does not need to be carried into the next cycle because it has genuinely finished.
Card 4 — The blank slate quality: What quality of openness, freshness, or new beginning is most available at this new moon once the ground has been cleared? This card names what the blank slate actually looks like — the specific quality of beginning that this particular new moon's darkness is offering.
Card 5 — What wants to emerge: Before any specific intention is set, what does the blank slate most naturally want to move toward? This card offers the first glimpse of what is genuinely wanting to be seeded — the direction that the cleared ground is naturally oriented toward.
The Three-Step Ritual Flow
Step 1: The Clearing Writing. On the blank paper, write everything that is still unresolved or incomplete from the previous cycle — every lingering concern, every unfinished thread, every thing you are still carrying that was not completed. Write it all out, and then — with deliberate intention — fold the paper and set it aside. Not destroyed (you may want to return to these items); simply set aside, outside the ritual space, to be worked with in a different context. The physical setting-aside is the clearing.
Step 2: The Blank Slate Moment. After the clearing writing has been set aside, sit for three minutes in the genuine experience of cleared ground. Feel what it is like to have the previous cycle's residue acknowledged and set aside. This moment — the actual experience of the blank slate — is the central experience of the ritual, and it deserves more than a moment of transitional thinking on the way to the next step.
Step 3: The First Emergence. Working with Card 5, write the first sentence of what wants to emerge from the blank slate: not the complete intention, not the full plan, but the first genuine movement of what is alive and wanting to begin in the cleared ground. This first emergence becomes the seed for the next ritual's more precise planting.
