The Blue Moon Ceremony: What to Do When the Second Full Moon Arrives
Share
A blue moon occurs approximately once every two to three years — the second full moon within a single calendar month, arriving because the lunar cycle of 29.5 days occasionally fits two complete cycles into one month's span. Once in a blue moon is a common expression precisely because this is genuinely rare. And in lunar practice, rarity translates directly to amplification: the blue moon carries an energy that no other full moon in the cycle carries, an unusual intensity and an unusual openness to what practitioners describe as the bold, the unexpected, and the genuinely transformative.
The regular full moon is for completion, release, and the closing of the cycle. The blue moon is for something different: the bold intentions, the wishes that feel too large for ordinary months, the commitments to transformation that require more than the usual lunar amplification. If you have been waiting for the right moment to declare something significant — a direction change, a major commitment, a wish that has been circling you for longer than you want to admit — the blue moon is that moment.
Why the Blue Moon Is Different
In lunar practice, the blue moon represents what exists outside the ordinary cycle — the unexpected gift, the additional space, the month that was given something extra. Because it falls outside the regular rhythm, the energy is less structured and more open, less about completion of the known pattern and more about the arrival of what the pattern could not predict. Practitioners who work consistently with the lunar cycle often describe blue moon ceremonies as producing shifts that feel qualitatively different from regular full moon work — faster, more surprising, more genuinely transformative in ways that arrive from unexpected directions.
The Blue Moon Ceremony
What you need: Blue or silver candle (the colors of rare and of the unexpected). A piece of paper. A blue or silver pen if you have one, black otherwise. A jar with a lid. Moon water from this blue moon (charged overnight — blue moon water is the rarest and most amplified of all moon waters; make more than you think you need).
Write your bold intentions: Not the intentions you already know you are working toward — those are for the regular full moon. The blue moon intentions are the ones that feel almost too large to write. The transformation you want but have been afraid to commit to formally. The wish that keeps returning despite your efforts to be realistic. The direction that some part of you knows is the true one but that you have not yet said aloud in the full moon's presence. Write them in the present tense, as if they are already in motion.
Speak them under the moon: Go outside if you can. Read what you wrote to the moon directly — not as a request but as a declaration. The blue moon ceremony works with a different quality of agency than asking; it is a statement of what you are moving toward and what you are calling toward you simultaneously.
Seal them: Fold the paper and place it in the jar. Cover it with blue moon water. Seal the jar. Place it somewhere you will see it — not hidden away but present. The sealed wish in water is a traditional form of the wish that is “set” — fixed in intention, held in the lunar medium, working between the visible and the invisible.
The seal holds for one year — until the next blue moon or until the intention has manifested, whichever comes first. Open it then. Read what you wrote. Notice what has changed.
The Rarest Moon Water
Blue moon water is the most potent moon water you can make. The second full moon in a month carries the accumulated energy of both cycles — the one that began the month and the one that closes it with this unusual, extra peak. Use it for your most significant ritual work, your most important crystal charging, and the intentions you are most serious about. Make a full jar and a small sealed bottle to keep for the coming year.
