Building Your Own Symbolic Language: The Final Stage of Becoming a Reader

Building Your Own Symbolic Language: The Final Stage of Becoming a Reader

At some point in the development of every serious tarot reader, something shifts.

The shift is subtle. It doesn't announce itself. But one day you realize that when you look at a card, what you see is not the traditional meaning you learned from a book. It is something more specific, more personal, more alive — a meaning that has been built from your own experience with the card, your own history of encounters with it, your own accumulated understanding of what it is pointing at.

This is the beginning of your own symbolic language. And it is, I think, the final stage of becoming a genuine reader.

What a Personal Symbolic Language Is

Every serious practitioner of a symbolic system eventually develops a personal relationship with its symbols that goes beyond the traditional meanings. This is not a departure from the tradition. It is the tradition working as it is supposed to work — being internalized, tested against experience, and refined into something that is both rooted in the collective understanding and genuinely personal.

A personal symbolic language is not a set of idiosyncratic meanings that you have invented to replace the traditional ones. It is a set of nuances, associations, and specific understandings that you have developed through sustained engagement with the cards — that sit on top of the traditional meanings and make them more precise, more specific, more alive.

The Three of Swords traditionally means heartbreak, grief, painful truth. In your personal symbolic language, it might mean something more specific: the particular quality of grief that comes from finally seeing something you had been refusing to see. The grief of clarity. That nuance is not in the traditional meaning. It is something you have learned from your own encounters with the card — from the readings where it appeared, from the situations it described, from the quality of experience it kept pointing at.

That nuance is yours. It is part of your symbolic language. And it makes your reading of the Three of Swords more precise than any book meaning could be.

How Personal Meanings Develop

Personal meanings develop through the daily practice, through sustained attention to the cards over time, and through the willingness to notice when a card is saying something that the traditional meaning doesn't quite capture.

The daily card practice is the primary engine of this development. When you draw the same card repeatedly over a period of weeks or months, you accumulate a body of experience with it — a record of the situations it appeared in, the qualities it described, the aspects of experience it kept pointing at. Over time, this accumulated experience becomes a personal understanding of the card that is richer and more specific than any book meaning.

The journal is essential to this process. Without a record, the accumulated experience remains diffuse — a vague sense that you know this card, without the specific memories that constitute that knowing. With a record, you can go back and see exactly what the card was pointing at in each encounter, and the pattern that emerges from those encounters becomes the foundation of your personal meaning.

The willingness to notice when the traditional meaning doesn't quite fit is also essential. When a card appears and the traditional meaning feels slightly off — when it is pointing at something that the book meaning gestures toward but doesn't quite reach — that gap is where your personal meaning lives. Paying attention to the gap, sitting with it, asking what the card is actually saying rather than what it is supposed to say — this is how personal meanings develop.

The Cards That Become Yours

Every reader has cards that feel particularly theirs — cards that they have a specific, personal relationship with that goes beyond the traditional meaning. These are usually the cards that have appeared most frequently in their own readings, or the cards that have appeared at the most significant moments, or the cards that have consistently pointed at something central to their own experience.

These cards are the core of your personal symbolic language. They are the ones you know most deeply, the ones whose nuances you have most fully developed, the ones you can read with the greatest precision and confidence.

They are also, often, the cards that are most relevant to your own psychological landscape — the cards that keep appearing because they are pointing at something central to who you are and how you move through the world. The card that is most yours is often the card that is most about you.

This is not a problem. It is information. The cards that are most yours are the ones that have taught you the most about yourself — and that self-knowledge is what makes you a better reader for others. You can read the Three of Swords with precision because you know what it is pointing at from the inside. You can read The Hermit with depth because you have lived what it describes.

When Personal Meanings Diverge from Traditional Ones

Sometimes a personal meaning will diverge significantly from the traditional one. A card that traditionally carries negative associations may, in your personal symbolic language, carry a more nuanced or even positive meaning — because your experience with it has been different from what the tradition describes.

This is legitimate. The traditional meanings are not fixed laws. They are accumulated wisdom — the distilled experience of many readers over many generations. They are the starting point, not the ending point. Your personal experience with a card is also data, and if it consistently diverges from the traditional meaning, that divergence is worth taking seriously.

The caveat is this: make sure the divergence is coming from genuine experience rather than from wishful thinking. If a card traditionally associated with difficulty consistently appears positive in your readings, ask yourself honestly whether that is because your experience has genuinely revealed a different dimension of the card — or because you have been reading the card the way you want it to read.

The distinction matters. Personal meanings that develop from genuine experience deepen the tradition. Personal meanings that develop from projection distort it.

Sharing Your Symbolic Language

One of the most interesting things about personal symbolic languages is what happens when you share them.

When you read for someone else using your personal understanding of a card — when you say not "this card traditionally means X" but "in my experience, this card is pointing at Y" — something different happens. The reading becomes more specific, more alive, more genuinely useful. Because you are not reciting a meaning. You are sharing an understanding that has been built from real experience.

This is what distinguishes a reader who has developed their own symbolic language from one who is still working from the book. The book reader gives you the tradition's understanding of the card. The reader with a personal symbolic language gives you something that has been tested against reality, refined through experience, and made specific through sustained attention.

That specificity is what makes a reading genuinely useful. Not the breadth of the reader's knowledge. The depth of their relationship with the symbols.

And that relationship — built through years of daily practice, sustained attention, honest tracking of hits and misses, and the willingness to keep looking at the cards with fresh eyes — is what the whole journey has been building toward.

The Way to Deepen Your Practice: 6 Grounded Anchors

When a practice feels restless or distracted, it is rarely a lack of discipline. More often, your nervous system is simply waiting for a physical cue that it is safe to arrive.

Insight remains abstract until it touches your physical world. Reflecting As Above, So Below, a sacred practice begins wherever you set an intentional boundary—draping a woven cloth where noise stops, attuning to an acoustic frequency, or taking up raw materials to forge an implement with your own hands.

You do not need an entire sanctuary built at once. A single deliberate anchor is enough to call you back home to yourself.
