Can't Understand Hermetic Principles? Simplified

BY NICOLE LAU

The Hermetic Principles sound complicated. Ancient. Esoteric. But they're actually simple universal laws that explain how reality works. Once you understand them, you can work with reality instead of against it. Here's the simplified version.

What Are the Hermetic Principles?

The Seven Hermetic Principles come from "The Kybalion," a text based on ancient Hermetic teachings attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. These are universal laws that govern reality.

The 7 Hermetic Principles (Simplified)

1. The Principle of Mentalism

"The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental."

Simplified: Reality is created by consciousness. Your mind shapes your experience.

Practical use: Change your thoughts β†’ change your reality. What you focus on expands.

2. The Principle of Correspondence

"As above, so below; as below, so above."

Simplified: Patterns repeat at all levels. What's true in the cosmos is true in you.

Practical use: Study yourself to understand the universe. Study the universe to understand yourself.

3. The Principle of Vibration

"Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates."

Simplified: Everything is energy in motion. Different vibrations create different realities.

Practical use: Raise your vibration (thoughts, emotions, actions) to attract higher experiences.

4. The Principle of Polarity

"Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites."

Simplified: Opposites are the same thing at different degrees. Hot/cold are both temperature. Love/hate are both passion.

Practical use: You can shift from one pole to another (fear to courage, poverty to wealth) because they're the same spectrum.

5. The Principle of Rhythm

"Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides."

Simplified: Life moves in cycles. What goes up must come down. What goes out must come back.

Practical use: Don't resist the rhythm. When you're in a low cycle, know it will rise again. Ride the wave.

6. The Principle of Cause and Effect

"Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause."

Simplified: Nothing happens by chance. Everything is caused by something.

Practical use: You're not a victim of random events. You're creating effects through your causes (thoughts, actions, energy).

7. The Principle of Gender

"Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles."

Simplified: Creation requires both masculine (active, projecting) and feminine (receptive, nurturing) energies.

Practical use: Balance doing (masculine) with being (feminine). Both are needed for manifestation.

How to Use the Hermetic Principles

For Manifestation:

  1. Mentalism: Hold the mental image of what you want
  2. Vibration: Raise your energy to match it
  3. Polarity: Shift from lack to abundance mindset
  4. Gender: Take action (masculine) and receive (feminine)
  5. Cause & Effect: Your thoughts/actions are the cause, manifestation is the effect

For Understanding Life:

  • Correspondence: Your outer world reflects your inner world
  • Rhythm: Bad times pass, good times come
  • Polarity: Problems contain solutions (same spectrum)

Common Misunderstandings

"As Above, So Below" Doesn't Mean:

"What happens in heaven happens on earth."

It means: The same patterns exist at all scales. Atoms mirror solar systems. Your body mirrors the cosmos.

"Everything is Mental" Doesn't Mean:

"Physical reality doesn't exist."

It means: Consciousness is primary. Matter is consciousness in form.

"Gender" Doesn't Mean:

"Biological sex."

It means: Active/receptive, projective/nurturing energies that exist in everything.

Daily Hermetic Practice

Morning:

Review one principle. Ask: "How does this apply to my life today?"

Throughout the Day:

Notice the principles in action. See correspondence, rhythm, polarity everywhere.

Evening:

Journal in your Hermetic Principles Journal. How did you see the principles today?

The Principles Work Together

You don't use one principle alone. They're interconnected:

  • Your mental state creates a vibration
  • That vibration attracts corresponding experiences
  • Which move in rhythms and polarities
  • Creating effects from your mental causes
  • Through balanced gender energies (action + reception)

You're Already Using Them

You've been using these principles your whole lifeβ€”you just didn't know it.

Every time you:

  • Changed your mindset and your life changed (Mentalism)
  • Noticed your mood affecting your day (Vibration)
  • Saw patterns repeat (Correspondence)
  • Experienced ups and downs (Rhythm)
  • Shifted from negative to positive (Polarity)
  • Created results through actions (Cause & Effect)
  • Balanced doing and being (Gender)

Now you can use them consciously.

The Hermetic Principles aren't mystical secrets. They're the operating system of reality. Learn them, and you learn to work with the universe instead of against it.

For me, weaving these laws into daily life has been a deeply grounding practice, especially through tools that keep me tethered to their wisdom. The 40 Manifestation Rituals guide has been a steady companion in applying the Principle of Cause and Effect, while the 13 New Moon Rituals beautifully aligns with the Principle of Rhythm and its cyclical flow. And when I want to deepen my understanding of how my inner world mirrors the outer, the Jung and the Archetype work is a treasure trove of insight on Correspondence.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
