The Chariot (VII): Will & Directional Control
Share
BY NICOLE LAU
The Chariot is directional control. Armored warrior in chariot pulled by two opposing sphinxes (black and white), holding scepter, moving forward through will. This is control systems theory: steering opposing forces toward single goal. The Chariot is the principle: mastery through discipline, victory through focused will.
Traditional Meaning
Upright: Control, willpower, success, determination, direction, victory. Reversed: Lack of control, lack of direction, aggression, opposition. Symbolism: Two sphinxes (opposing forces), armor (protection), wand (control), star crown (divine guidance), city walls (leaving comfort).
As Archetype: The Victor
The Chariot is the state of directed motion. After Lovers' choice, Chariot is action on that choice. Not passive flow (Empress) but active steering. Represents control systems: feedback loops maintaining trajectory despite disturbances.
Cross-System Correspondences
Kabbalah: Cheth path, Binah to Geburah. Astrology: Cancer (protective, emotional depth, cardinal/initiating). Alchemy: Chariot of Antimony. I Ching: Hexagram 7 (The Army - discipline). Chakra: Solar Plexus (will, personal power).
Psychology
Jungian: Ego strength, self-mastery. Developmental: Competence, self-discipline. Shadow: Aggression vs assertion, control vs rigidity.
Control Theory
Control systems: maintain desired state despite disturbances. PID controller: proportional (respond to error), integral (correct accumulated error), derivative (anticipate future error). The Chariot is life's PID controller: adjust course continuously to reach goal.
Dynamics
Moderately stable. The Chariot state requires constant effort (steering, balancing forces). Loss of control → crash. Reaching goal → transition to next state (Strength - internal mastery).
Practical Navigation
Set clear direction, balance opposing forces, maintain discipline, adjust course as needed, protect yourself (armor), trust your will. The Chariot teaches: victory requires control, not just desire.
Conclusion
The Chariot (VII) is will and directional control. Steering opposing forces, feedback loops, trajectory optimization. After choice (Lovers), comes action (Chariot). Victory through discipline.
