BY NICOLE LAU
Citrine, with its golden yellow to amber hue, has symbolized abundance, prosperity, and success for centuries. Named from French "citron" (lemon) for its color, citrine is yellow quartz colored by iron impurities. Merchants carried citrine for business success, earning it nickname "merchant's stone." From ancient Roman wealth talismans to modern manifestation grids, citrine remains ultimate prosperity crystal - attracting abundance, success, joy, and solar energy.
Natural vs Heat-Treated Citrine
Important distinction: Most commercial "citrine" is heat-treated amethyst or smoky quartz. Natural citrine is rare, pale yellow to golden. Heat-treated citrine is more common, deeper orange-amber, more affordable. Both carry citrine energy, but natural citrine is prized by collectors and purists.
Natural Citrine: Pale yellow to golden, naturally colored by iron and natural radiation. Rare, expensive, mostly from Brazil, Madagascar, Russia.
Heat-Treated: Amethyst or smoky quartz heated to 400-500°C, turning purple/brown to yellow/orange. Common, affordable, still effective for crystal healing.
Ancient Rome: Wealth and Protection
Romans valued citrine (then called yellow quartz) for its sunny color resembling gold. Carved citrine into intaglios, signet rings, decorative objects. Associated with Mercury (commerce god) and Apollo (sun god). Merchants wore citrine for business success, protection from theft, clear thinking in negotiations.
Roman soldiers carried citrine amulets for protection and courage. Believed citrine's golden light repelled darkness, evil, danger.
Medieval Trade: Merchant's Companion
Medieval merchants and traders adopted citrine as prosperity talisman. Carried citrine in money pouches, wore citrine rings, kept citrine in shops. Belief: citrine attracts wealth, prevents financial loss, ensures fair deals. "Merchant's stone" nickname emerged from this tradition.
Medieval lapidaries described citrine's virtues: promotes success in business, protects travelers (especially merchants on trade routes), aids digestion (believed to strengthen stomach and liver), dispels nightmares and negative thoughts.
Renaissance and Victorian Eras: Jewelry and Status
Renaissance nobility wore citrine jewelry as status symbol. Golden color associated with wealth, power, sun's life-giving energy. Citrine brooches, necklaces, rings adorned European aristocracy.
Victorian era saw citrine popularity surge. Scottish citrine (from Cairngorm mountains) became fashionable. Queen Victoria loved Scottish jewelry including citrine. Citrine's warm color suited Victorian romantic aesthetic.

Citrine Never Needs Cleansing?
Popular belief: citrine never needs energetic cleansing because it doesn't absorb negative energy - it transmutes it. While most crystals require regular cleansing (moonlight, sage, sound), citrine allegedly self-cleanses. Some practitioners disagree, cleansing all crystals regularly. Try both approaches, see what feels right.
