Community and Internal Locus: Finding Your Tribe

BY NICOLE LAU

The Psychology of Internal Locus: Why Most Suffering is Optional - Module 3: Adolescent Internal Locus Building (Ages 13-18) - Part II: Relationships and Social

Everyone needs community. People who share your values, support your growth, celebrate your authentic self. Your tribe - the people who get you, accept you, love you as you are. But when your worth depends on belonging, you'll join any community that accepts you. When your value depends on fitting in, you'll sacrifice yourself to maintain membership. When your identity is your community, you'll lose yourself to stay included. This is external locus creating false belonging - joining communities that don't truly fit, performing to maintain membership, never finding your real tribe.

When your worth depends on community acceptance, you can't find your true tribe. You'll join the first group that accepts you, not the group that truly fits. You'll perform to belong, not be yourself. You'll stay in communities that don't serve you because leaving feels like losing worth. This creates loneliness in community - surrounded by people but not truly belonging.

But here's the truth: your tribe exists. When your worth is inherent, you can wait for the right community. When your value is constant, you can be yourself and attract aligned people. When your identity is solid, you can find community that celebrates authentic you. This is internal locus community - true belonging, authentic connection, finding your people.

External Locus Community

When worth depends on belonging:

Join Any Community: First group that accepts you. Not evaluating fit, just seeking belonging.

Perform to Belong: Hide authentic self. Show them what they want to see. Exhausting performance.

Stay in Wrong Community: Even when it doesn't fit, stay. Leaving feels like losing worth.

Lonely in Community: Surrounded by people but not truly known. Performing, not belonging.

Identity Confusion: Don't know who you are outside community. Identity is membership.

Fear of Leaving: Leaving community feels like losing self. Worth tied to belonging.

Internal Locus Community

When worth is inherent:

Choose Aligned Community: Wait for community that truly fits. Values alignment matters.

Be Authentic: Show up as real self. Community loves authentic you.

Leave if Doesn't Fit: Can leave communities that don't serve you. Worth intact.

True Belonging: Known and loved for who you are. Real connection.

Clear Identity: Know who you are with and without community. Solid self.

Freedom to Choose: Can join, leave, change communities. Worth doesn't depend on membership.

Finding Your Tribe

How to find your people:

1. Know Your Values: What matters to you? What do you care about? Your tribe shares these.

2. Be Yourself: Authentic self attracts authentic community. Performance attracts wrong people.

3. Try Different Communities: Explore. Try different groups. See what fits.

4. Look for Value Alignment: Do they share your values? Do you feel at home?

5. Notice How You Feel: Do you feel energized or drained? Accepted or performing?

6. Give It Time: Real belonging takes time. Don't rush. Let it develop.

7. Trust Your Gut: If it doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Keep looking.

Signs You've Found Your Tribe

What true belonging feels like:

Can Be Yourself: Don't have to perform. Accepted as you are.

Shared Values: Care about same things. Aligned priorities.

Mutual Support: Support each other's growth. Celebrate each other's wins.

Feel Energized: Time with them fills you up, doesn't drain you.

Safe to Be Vulnerable: Can share struggles. Safe to be real.

Celebrate Differences: Don't have to be identical. Differences are valued.

Feel at Home: This is where you belong. These are your people.

When to Leave a Community

Recognizing when it's time to go:

Values Misalignment: Don't share core values anymore. Fundamental disconnect.

Can't Be Authentic: Must perform to belong. Can't be real self.

Toxic Dynamics: Gossip, drama, cruelty. Unhealthy community.

Outgrown It: You've changed. Community doesn't fit anymore. That's okay.

Drains You: Time with them exhausts you. No longer life-giving.

Your Worth Intact: Can leave. Worth doesn't depend on this community.

Building Your Own Community

Creating tribe from scratch:

Start Small: One or two aligned people. Build from there.

Shared Activity: Community forms around shared interests, values, activities.

Be the Connector: Introduce aligned people to each other. Build network.

Your Tribe Exists

This is the message about community: Your tribe exists. People who will love authentic you. People who share your values. People who celebrate your growth. They're out there. Don't settle for false belonging. Don't perform to fit in. Be yourself. Your authentic self will attract your tribe. It might take time. You might feel lonely while searching. But your people exist. More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough β€”
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting β€”
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice β€” it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises β€” bergamot, frankincense β€” something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space β€” and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space β€” helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing β€” written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom β€” to take your understanding further.
