Conjunction Meditation: Uniting Inner Opposites in the Sacred Marriage

Meditating with the Sacred Marriage
Conjunction meditation is the practice of consciously bringing inner opposites into relationship — of creating the inner conditions for the sacred marriage that is the heart of the fourth alchemical stage. This is not a passive practice; it requires the active engagement of the imagination, the willingness to hold the tension of opposites without collapsing into either one, and the courage to embrace aspects of the self that have been rejected or denied.
The fundamental gesture of Conjunction meditation is embrace: the willingness to hold both sides of a polarity simultaneously, to find the truth in both, and to allow a new synthesis to emerge from their union. This is the alchemical operation of conjunction: not the victory of one opposite over the other, but the creative union of both.
The Conjunction Meditation: Step by Step
Phase 1: Establishing the Heart Center (5-10 minutes)
Begin in a comfortable seated position. Take a few deep breaths, allowing the body to settle. Bring your attention to the heart center — the seat of Conjunction, the place where opposites meet and are united.
Visualize a green light at the heart center — the color of Venus, of growth, of the living integration of opposites. Allow this light to expand with each breath, filling the chest, the body, the space around you.
Phase 2: Identifying the Opposites (10 minutes)
Bring to mind a pair of opposites that are active in your inner life. This might be:
- The part of you that wants to be seen and the part that wants to hide
- The part that is strong and the part that is vulnerable
- The part that is certain and the part that is confused
- The masculine and feminine aspects of your nature
- The wounded child and the wise adult
- The shadow (what you have rejected) and the persona (what you present to the world)
Allow both sides of the polarity to be present simultaneously. Notice the tension between them — the pull toward one and away from the other. Simply hold this tension in the spacious awareness of the heart center.
Phase 3: The Sacred Marriage (15-20 minutes)
Now, in your visualization, allow the two sides of the polarity to take form as figures — the Red King and the White Queen, or whatever images arise naturally. See them standing on opposite sides of a sacred space, facing each other.
Allow them to approach each other slowly. Notice what arises as they draw closer: resistance, fear, longing, recognition. Hold all of it in the spacious awareness of the heart center.
When they are ready — in their own time, not forced — allow them to meet. Allow the meeting to take whatever form it naturally takes: a handshake, an embrace, a dance, a merging of light. Trust the process.
As the two figures unite, notice what is produced by their union: a new quality, a new energy, a new possibility that neither could produce alone. This is the filius philosophorum — the philosophical child, the new self born from the sacred marriage.
Phase 4: Embodying the Union (5-10 minutes)
Allow the energy of the sacred marriage to settle into the body. Feel it in the heart center, in the chest, in the belly. This is not merely an inner vision — it is a real energetic event, a genuine shift in the organization of the psyche.
Ask: What does this union make possible that was not possible before? How does this integration want to express itself in my life?
Phase 5: Integration (5 minutes)
Slowly return to ordinary awareness. Journal immediately about your experience: What opposites did you work with? What arose during the meditation? What new possibility emerged from the union?
Working with the Anima/Animus
For those working with the Jungian framework, Conjunction meditation can be specifically directed toward the integration of the anima (inner feminine in men) or animus (inner masculine in women). This involves developing a conscious, respectful relationship with the contrasexual figure in the psyche — learning to listen to its wisdom, to honor its perspective, and to integrate its qualities into conscious expression.
