Ritual for the Sacred Marriage
Conjunction rituals create a sacred container for the union of opposites — for the inner sacred marriage that is the heart of the fourth alchemical stage. These rituals work with the element of Earth (embodiment, stability, the capacity to give form to the spiritual) and the energy of Venus (love, beauty, the magnetic attraction that draws opposites together).
The Core Conjunction Ritual: The Sacred Marriage Altar
This ritual creates a physical altar that represents and supports the inner sacred marriage.
What You Will Need
- Two candles — one red (the Red King, solar/masculine principle) and one white or silver (the White Queen, lunar/feminine principle)
- A green candle for the center (the union, the heart, Venus)
- Two objects representing the opposites you are integrating
- A central object representing the union (a crystal, a flower, a symbol)
- Rose petals or green herbs (Venus associations)
- Optional: rose essential oil, emerald or rose quartz crystals
The Ritual
Step 1: Prepare the altar. Place the red candle on the right side of your altar and the white candle on the left. Place the green candle at the center. Arrange your two objects representing the opposites on either side, with the central union object between them. Scatter rose petals around the altar.
Step 2: Name the opposites. Light the red candle and name the solar/masculine principle you are working with: "I honor the [strength/will/clarity/action] within me." Light the white candle and name the lunar/feminine principle: "I honor the [receptivity/feeling/intuition/flow] within me."
Step 3: The marriage. Light the green candle from both the red and white candles simultaneously (or light it from one and then the other). As you light it, declare: "In this flame, the opposites are united. In this light, the sacred marriage is complete. I am whole."
Step 4: The meditation. Sit before the altar and enter the Conjunction meditation — allowing the inner sacred marriage to unfold in the space created by the ritual.
Step 5: The vow. When the meditation is complete, make a vow to the sacred marriage: one concrete way you will honor both sides of the polarity in your daily life. Write this vow in your journal.
Step 6: Close. Allow the candles to burn for a while (safely supervised) before extinguishing them. Keep the altar in place for at least one lunar cycle as a reminder of the sacred marriage.
The Venus Day Ritual
Venus governs Conjunction. Friday is Venus's day. This simple weekly ritual honors the sacred marriage on Venus's day:
Each Friday, take a few minutes to check in with the sacred marriage within you. Ask: How are the opposites within me relating this week? Where is there harmony? Where is there tension? What does the sacred marriage need from me today? Light a green or pink candle, offer a flower, and spend 10 minutes in Conjunction meditation.
The Shadow Integration Ritual
This ritual specifically addresses the integration of the shadow — the rejected aspects of the self that are the primary material of Conjunction work.
Write a letter to your shadow: "Dear Shadow, I acknowledge that you exist. I acknowledge that I have rejected you. I am ready to hear what you have to say. What do you need me to know? What gifts do you carry that I have been refusing?" Then write the shadow's response — allowing it to speak without censorship. This dialogue is the beginning of the sacred marriage with the shadow.
