Cord Cutting Bath Ritual: Release Toxic Connections
Share
Not all connections nourish us. Some drain. Some bind. Some keep us tethered to people, situations, and versions of ourselves that we have outgrown — invisible threads of energy that continue to pull at us long after the relationship has ended or the situation has changed.
In energy work and spiritual traditions worldwide, these connections are called cords — energetic attachments that form between people through shared experience, emotional intensity, trauma bonding, unresolved conflict, or deep love. Cords are not inherently negative. The cords between a parent and child, between close friends, between long-term partners, are part of what makes those relationships feel so real and so sustaining.
But some cords become toxic. The cord to an ex-partner who still occupies your thoughts years after the relationship ended. The cord to a parent whose criticism still echoes in your head. The cord to a friend who consistently takes more than they give. The cord to a past version of yourself — a role, an identity, a story about who you are — that no longer fits.
The cord cutting bath ritual is a powerful practice for consciously dissolving these toxic connections and reclaiming the energy that has been flowing out through them.
Understanding Energetic Cords
Energetic cords are not a metaphor. They are a description of a real phenomenon that energy workers, healers, and sensitive individuals have observed and worked with for centuries. In many traditions, they are understood as literal threads of energy that connect the energy bodies of two people, allowing energy to flow between them.
Healthy cords are characterized by reciprocal, balanced energy flow — both people give and receive, both are nourished by the connection. Toxic cords are characterized by imbalanced or draining energy flow — one person consistently loses energy through the cord, while the other gains it, or both people are locked in a pattern of mutual depletion.
Signs that you may have toxic cords that need cutting: You think obsessively about a specific person, even when you do not want to. You feel drained after interactions with a specific person. You feel a persistent heaviness or sadness that you associate with a specific relationship. You have ended a relationship but still feel emotionally entangled with the person. You find yourself repeating the same patterns in relationships, as if pulled by an invisible force. You feel like you cannot fully move forward in your life because something is holding you back.
The Cord Cutting Bath Recipe
Salts: 1 cup Epsom salt — the primary releasing salt, draws out energetic residue and supports the physical release of what the body is holding. 1 cup sea salt — for purification and the creation of energetic boundaries, the traditional salt of protection and severance in folk magic traditions worldwide. 1/4 cup black salt (if available) — sea salt mixed with activated charcoal or ash, used in protective magic for banishing and severance.
Essential oils for cord cutting: Clary sage (4 drops) — the oil of clarity and release, supports the emotional courage required for cord cutting. Juniper berry (3 drops) — for purification and protection, clears negative energy and creates a protective boundary after the cord is cut. Frankincense (2 drops) — for spiritual elevation and the perspective to see the cord from a higher vantage point. Black pepper (1 drop) — for the strength and courage to cut what needs to be cut.
Herbs for cord cutting: Rosemary for purification and clarity. Dried sage for energetic clearing. Bay leaves — write the name of the cord you are cutting on a bay leaf and float it in the bath.
Tools: A black candle for banishing and release. A white candle for purification and new beginnings. A piece of black tourmaline or obsidian placed at the edge of the bath for protection.
The Cord Cutting Bath Ritual: Step by Step
Step 1: Identify the cord. Before drawing the bath, sit quietly and identify clearly what cord you are cutting. Be specific — is it the cord to a specific person, a relationship pattern, a version of yourself, a belief? Write it down: "I am cutting the cord to [name/pattern/belief]."
Step 2: Prepare the bath. Draw the bath. Add your salts and oils. Write the name of the cord on a bay leaf and place it in the bath. Light your black and white candles. Speak aloud: "I prepare this water for the work of release. I call on the power of salt and water to dissolve what binds me. I am ready to be free."
Step 3: Enter with intention. Enter the bath slowly and deliberately. As you lower yourself into the water, feel the salt water beginning to work — drawing out the energetic residue of the cord, softening the places where it is attached.
Step 4: The cord cutting visualization. Close your eyes. Take several deep breaths. Visualize the person or pattern you are cutting the cord to. Notice where in your body you feel the cord — most commonly in the solar plexus, the heart, or the lower abdomen. Visualize the cord clearly — its color, its texture, its thickness. Now visualize a tool of severance — a sword of golden light, a pair of sacred scissors, a flame that burns cleanly. On the exhale, visualize cutting the cord cleanly and completely. See it dissolve into light. See the energy that was flowing through it return to you — your energy, reclaimed.
Speak aloud: "I release you. I release myself. What was between us is complete. I reclaim my energy. I reclaim my freedom. I reclaim myself."
Step 5: The sealing practice. After cutting the cord, visualize a golden light filling the place in your body where the cord was connected — healing the wound, sealing the opening, restoring your wholeness. Say: "I am sealed. I am whole. I am protected."
Step 6: Soak and integrate. Stay in the bath for 20-30 minutes after the cord cutting visualization. Allow the salt water to continue drawing out any remaining energetic residue.
Step 7: The closing. Before leaving the bath, take the bay leaf from the water. Say the name of what you have released one final time. Then say: "It is done. I am free." After the bath, burn the bay leaf safely.
After the Cord Cutting Bath: What to Expect
Emotional release: Tears, anger, grief, or relief may arise during or after the bath. Allow all of it — this is the cord releasing. Physical sensations: Tingling, warmth, or a sense of lightness in the area where the cord was attached. Dreams: The cord cutting may continue in the dream state — you may dream of the person or situation you released. A sense of spaciousness: Many people report feeling noticeably lighter and more spacious after cord cutting work. Temporary resurgence: Sometimes thoughts of the person may intensify briefly before subsiding — this is the cord making one final attempt to reattach. Hold your intention. The release is real.
Cord Cutting as an Act of Love
Cord cutting is not an act of hatred or rejection. It is an act of love — for yourself and for the other person. When you cut a toxic cord, you are not erasing the relationship or denying that it mattered. You are releasing both yourself and the other person from an energetic pattern that is no longer serving either of you.
True love does not bind. It frees. The cord cutting bath is an act of that deeper love — the love that says: "I release you to your path. I release myself to mine. What we shared was real. And now we are both free."
