Cord Cutting Ritual: How to Release an Ex and Reclaim Your Energy
Share
When a relationship ends, not everything ends cleanly.
The person may be gone from your daily life. The formal connection may be severed. But there are threads — energetic, emotional, psychological — that can persist long after the practical relationship has concluded. The pattern of reaching for your phone to tell them something. The way certain songs or places still pull at you months later. The recurring thoughts, the dreams, the moments when you catch yourself still responding to them emotionally as though they were present.
These threads are what the Cord Cutting ritual is designed to address.
What Energetic Cords Are
The concept of energetic cords comes from multiple traditions — from Huna in Hawaii, from various shamanic practices, from Tantric and yogic traditions, and from modern energy healing frameworks. The basic concept is consistent across these traditions: when we form significant emotional and energetic bonds with other people, those bonds have a reality that persists beyond the practical relationship.
These cords are not inherently negative. The deep cords between loving parents and children, between long-term committed partners, between close friends — these are part of the fabric of relationship. What the Cord Cutting ritual addresses is not connection itself, but the specific threads that have become hooks: the connections that pull energy toward a relationship that no longer serves, that keep you emotionally entangled with someone you have decided to move on from, or that carry the residue of pain, resentment, or unfinished longing.
When to Use the Cord Cutting Ritual
The Cord Cutting ritual is most useful:
- After a romantic relationship ends, when you find yourself emotionally unable to move forward
- After any relationship (friendship, family, professional) that held a strong emotional charge and has ended in a way that left unresolved energy
- When you keep cycling through the same thoughts about a person long after you have consciously decided to let them go
- When you feel your energy is still significantly caught up in what was rather than what is
Cord cutting is not about eliminating love or erasing memory. It is about releasing the specific energetic hooks that keep you entangled in a way that is no longer serving your wellbeing or growth.
The Cord Cutting Ritual
What you need:
- A black candle and a white candle
- A length of string, yarn, or cord — long enough to tie around both candles with some slack in between
- Scissors or a knife for cutting the cord
- Optional: black tourmaline or obsidian for protection and clearing; salt for purification
The practice:
- Place the two candles facing each other, about a foot apart. The black candle represents the energy you are releasing. The white candle represents yourself, cleansed and reclaimed.
- Tie the cord loosely between the two candles.
- Light both candles.
- Sit quietly and bring to mind what you are releasing — not with anger or bitterness, but with honesty. Acknowledge what this connection was, what it gave you, and what it cost you.
- When you are ready, speak aloud: "I release all energetic cords between myself and [name/this connection]. I release with love and without bitterness. I reclaim my energy. I reclaim my wholeness. I am free."
- Cut the cord between the candles with the scissors or knife, in one clean, decisive cut.
- Let both candles burn until the cord ends have burned away completely, or snuff them safely.
- Take the cut cord remnants and bury them, flush them, or burn them — completing the physical release.
After the Cord Cutting
The days following a cord cutting ritual may bring a range of experiences: a sense of lightness and release, or occasionally a surge of emotion as the energetic change processes. Both are normal. Take care of yourself. Rest. Give your nervous system time to integrate the shift.
If you find yourself re-engaging mentally or emotionally with what you have released, acknowledge it without judgment and return your attention to yourself. The ritual begins the release; your ongoing choices complete it.
