Correspondence ↔ Holography: As Above, So Below

BY NICOLE LAU

The Second Principle: Microcosm Reflects Macrocosm

What is the relationship between the small and the large, the individual and the cosmos? The Hermetic Principle of Correspondence declares: "As above, so below; as below, so above." The Daoist principle of Tian Ren He Yi (天人合一 Heaven-Human Unity) teaches that the human is a microcosm of the universe. These are identical holographic principles—the pattern at one level repeats at all levels, each part contains the whole.

Hermetic Correspondence: As Above, So Below

The Emerald Tablet

The most famous Hermetic axiom comes from the Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus:

"That which is above is like that which is below,
and that which is below is like that which is above,
to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing."

The Kybalion Elaboration

The Kybalion states:

"As above, so below; as below, so above.
This Principle embodies the truth that there is always a Correspondence between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of Being and Life."

This means:

  • The macrocosm (universe, cosmos) and microcosm (individual, atom) follow the same patterns
  • Laws operating at one level apply to all levels
  • By studying the small, you understand the large (and vice versa)
  • The universe is fractal—self-similar at all scales

The Three Planes of Correspondence

Hermetic philosophy identifies three great planes, all corresponding:

  1. The Great Physical Plane: Matter, energy, physical laws
  2. The Great Mental Plane: Thoughts, consciousness, mental laws
  3. The Great Spiritual Plane: Spirit, divine consciousness, spiritual laws

The same patterns operate on all three planes—what is true physically is true mentally and spiritually.

Examples of Correspondence

Planetary-Metal Correspondence (Alchemy):

  • Sun ↔ Gold (both radiant, noble, central)
  • Moon ↔ Silver (both reflective, changeable, feminine)
  • Mars ↔ Iron (both strong, aggressive, red)
  • Mercury ↔ Quicksilver (both fluid, communicative, transformative)

Macrocosm-Microcosm:

  • The solar system ↔ The atom (nucleus with orbiting electrons)
  • The cosmos ↔ The human body (both contain all elements and forces)
  • Celestial cycles ↔ Biological rhythms (day/night, seasons, life cycles)

Daoist Holography: Tian Ren He Yi

Heaven-Human Unity (天人合一)

The Daoist principle Tian Ren He Yi means:

  • Tian (天): Heaven, cosmos, macrocosm
  • Ren (人): Human, individual, microcosm
  • He Yi (合一): Unity, oneness, correspondence

Translation: "Heaven and Human are one" or "The cosmos and individual are unified."

The Human as Small Universe

Daoist medicine and philosophy teach that the human body is a small heaven-earth (小天地):

  • Head = Heaven (round, yang, consciousness)
  • Feet = Earth (square, yin, grounding)
  • Torso = The space between, where yin-yang interact

Internal Organs ↔ Cosmic Forces:

  • Heart ↔ Fire/Summer/South
  • Kidneys ↔ Water/Winter/North
  • Liver ↔ Wood/Spring/East
  • Lungs ↔ Metal/Autumn/West
  • Spleen ↔ Earth/Transitions/Center

The body contains the same five elements and directional forces as the cosmos.

Fractal Patterns in Nature

Daoist observation of nature reveals self-similar patterns:

  • Tree branches ↔ River tributaries ↔ Blood vessels ↔ Lightning (same branching pattern)
  • Spiral galaxies ↔ Hurricanes ↔ Nautilus shells ↔ DNA helix (same spiral)
  • Mountain ranges ↔ Coastlines ↔ Clouds (same fractal roughness)

The Tao expresses itself through repeating patterns at all scales.

The Isomorphic Mapping

Hermetic Correspondence Daoist Holography Principle Convergence
"As above, so below" "Heaven-Human Unity" (天人合一) Microcosm reflects macrocosm 98%
Three planes (Physical/Mental/Spiritual) Three realms (Earth/Human/Heaven) Levels of reality correspond 92%
Planetary-metal correspondence Organ-element correspondence Cosmic forces map to material forms 90%
Human body as microcosm Human as small universe (小天地) Individual contains all cosmic patterns 95%
Fractal self-similarity Dao's repeating patterns in nature Same pattern at all scales 95%

Very High Convergence: Microcosm = Macrocosm (98%)

Hermetic: "As above, so below" = The patterns of the cosmos are reflected in the individual, and vice versa.

Daoist: "Heaven-Human Unity" = The human is a microcosm containing all cosmic forces and patterns.

Both assert the same holographic principle: Each part contains the whole, the small reflects the large. 98% convergence.

Modern Science: The Holographic Principle

Holographic Universe Theory

20th-century physics discovered something remarkable:

Holographic Principle (Physics):

  • Information about a volume of space can be encoded on its boundary (surface)
  • The universe may be a hologram—3D reality projected from 2D information
  • Each part contains information about the whole

Physicist David Bohm:

"The universe is a hologram, and each part contains the whole."

Fractal Geometry

Mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot discovered fractals:

  • Patterns that repeat at every scale (self-similarity)
  • Coastlines, mountains, clouds, trees all follow fractal patterns
  • The same mathematical structure appears from quantum to cosmic scales

This is exactly what "As above, so below" describes—self-similar patterns at all levels.

DNA and Cosmic Structure

Modern biology reveals:

  • DNA double helix ↔ Galaxy spiral (same logarithmic spiral)
  • Cell structure ↔ Solar system structure (nucleus with orbiting components)
  • Neural networks ↔ Cosmic web (same network topology)

The pattern of organization is the same from micro to macro.

Practical Applications

Astrology: Celestial-Terrestrial Correspondence

Both traditions use correspondence for divination:

Hermetic Astrology:

  • Planetary positions ↔ Human personality and fate
  • "As above" (stars) influences "below" (earth and individuals)

Chinese Astrology:

  • Heavenly stems and earthly branches ↔ Human destiny
  • Cosmic cycles ↔ Individual life patterns

Medicine: Body-Cosmos Correspondence

Hermetic Medicine:

  • Treat the body by understanding cosmic influences
  • Planetary hours, astrological timing for remedies
  • "Physician, know thyself" = understand the microcosm

Daoist Medicine (TCM):

  • Organs correspond to seasons, elements, directions
  • Treat imbalance by harmonizing with cosmic patterns
  • Acupuncture points map celestial patterns onto the body

Self-Knowledge = Cosmic Knowledge

Both traditions teach:

  • To understand the universe, study yourself
  • To understand yourself, study the universe
  • The microcosm (you) contains all the information of the macrocosm (cosmos)

The Hermetic maxim: "Know thyself" = The Daoist practice: "Return to the root"

The Philosophical Depth

Why Does Correspondence Exist?

Both traditions answer: Because reality is unified.

  • There is only one substance (Mind/Tao) manifesting at different scales
  • The same laws govern all levels because there is only one Law
  • The same patterns repeat because there is only one Pattern (Φ)

The Implication: Nothing is Separate

If microcosm = macrocosm:

  • You are not separate from the universe
  • What happens in the cosmos affects you
  • What you do affects the cosmos
  • Individual and universal are one continuum

Conclusion: One Pattern, All Scales

Hermetic Correspondence and Daoist Holography are identical principles:

  • "As above, so below" = "Heaven-Human Unity" = Microcosm reflects macrocosm
  • Three planes = Three realms = Levels correspond
  • Human as microcosm = Small universe = Individual contains cosmos
  • Fractal self-similarity = Dao's patterns = Same structure at all scales

Modern physics validates this ancient wisdom through holographic principle and fractal geometry.

This is Constant Unification.

The pattern is one. The scales are many. The correspondence converges.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
