Courage Oil and Shadow Work Oil: Magical Oil Recipes for the Warrior and the Descent
Share
Courage and shadow work might appear to be opposites in the landscape of inner life — one the active, forward-moving force of the warrior who faces what must be faced, the other the slow, interior descent into what has been hidden, avoided, and denied. In practice, they are the same movement: genuine courage, in the magical tradition, is not the absence of fear but the willingness to move toward what is feared, and genuine shadow work requires more sustained courage than almost any other form of inner practice. The warrior and the one who descends into the dark are the same person at different stages of the same journey.
Courage Oil: The Warrior Blend
Purpose: To activate the inner warrior's energy — the fierce, forward-moving, fear-facing quality of genuine courage; to provide energetic support for the moments that require action in spite of fear, truth-telling in spite of its cost, or the decision that changes everything.
Essential oil formula (per 10ml carrier):
- Ginger: 4 drops — the most fiercely activating oil in the aromatic palette; ginger's hot, stimulating quality directly activates the solar plexus and the body's sense of personal power and capability
- Black pepper: 3 drops — the oil of the warrior in multiple traditions; its sharp, penetrating quality drives through hesitation and doubt
- Bergamot: 2 drops — adding the quality of genuine confidence rather than mere stimulation; bergamot's warm citrus supports the authentic self-assurance that sustainable courage is built on
- Rosemary: 1 drop — the oil of strength and the memory of who one genuinely is when fear has temporarily obscured it
Carrier oil: Jojoba or fractionated coconut oil.
Botanical additions: Red garnet chip (for the fierce life force of genuine courage), carnelian chip, a small piece of dried ginger root.
Best time to make: Tuesday (Mars's day, the planet of courage, action, and the warrior) or any morning before a day that requires particular courage. The waxing moon for building strength and capacity.
How to use: Apply to the solar plexus (seat of personal power) and the heart center before any courageous action. Apply to the throat if the courageous act is speaking a difficult truth. Inhale directly from the bottle or the anointed wrist in the moment that courage is most needed. Anoint red candles for courage ritual, moving from base toward wick.
Shadow Work Oil: The Descent Blend
Purpose: To support the deliberate, conscious practice of shadow work — the process of acknowledging, integrating, and transforming the disowned, suppressed, and denied aspects of the self; to create the energetic conditions for this most demanding of inner practices.
Essential oil formula (per 10ml carrier):
- Vetiver: 4 drops — the deepest, most rootward oil available; its heavy, earthy, almost underground quality is precisely appropriate for the descent into the shadow's domain
- Frankincense: 3 drops — the oil of the sacred witness; frankincense provides the quality of compassionate, clear-seeing attention that shadow work requires
- Myrrh: 2 drops — the oil of what has been lost and can be recovered; myrrh accompanies the descent as frankincense accompanies the witness
- Black spruce: 1 drop — the oil of the deep forest, of the dark places where genuine resources are found; black spruce is the oil of descent with genuine support
Carrier oil: Jojoba. For shadow work, a slightly heavier application is appropriate — the oil on the skin is a physical reminder of the body's presence and groundedness during the potentially destabilizing work of meeting the shadow.
Botanical additions: Smoky quartz chip (for grounding during the descent), black obsidian chip (the mirror of the shadow), labradorite (for the liminal space of shadow work).
Best time to make: The waning moon or the dark of the moon, when the energy of the shadow is most accessible. Saturday (Saturn's day of reckoning and depth).
How to use: Apply before any shadow work session: journaling about difficult material, working with the parts of the self that have been most consistently rejected, therapy, or any practice that deliberately encounters the denied self. Apply to the root chakra (base of spine or soles of feet) for grounding; to the solar plexus for the courage that shadow work requires; to the third eye for the clear-seeing that makes it productive rather than merely painful. Use consistently throughout a shadow work practice rather than occasionally — the oil becomes a ritual anchor for the practice itself.
