Cursing vs. Binding: When the Sixth Pentacle Is More Appropriate Than the Second
Share
The Saturn series contains two seals that address adversaries through different mechanisms: the Second Pentacle compels obedience and binding, and the Sixth Pentacle curses through sustained spiritual affliction. Both are directed at specific persons; both draw on Saturnine power; both are instruments of the practitioner's will against an adversary. But they operate through fundamentally different mechanisms and are appropriate for fundamentally different situations. Understanding when cursing is more appropriate than binding — and when binding is more appropriate than cursing — is essential to choosing the right instrument for your specific adversarial situation.
The Second Pentacle: Binding and Compulsion
The Second Pentacle of Saturn compels obedience and submission. Its operation is one of binding — of restricting the adversary's freedom of action, compelling their compliance, and forcing their submission to the practitioner's will. The Second Pentacle does not necessarily cause the adversary harm; it constrains them, limits their ability to act against the practitioner, and compels their obedience.
The Second Pentacle is most appropriate when:
- The goal is to stop the adversary's harmful actions without necessarily causing them personal suffering
- Compliance and submission are what is required rather than affliction and torment
- The practitioner wants to constrain the adversary rather than harm them
- The situation may be resolved through the adversary's forced compliance
- The practitioner prefers a less harmful approach that still addresses the adversarial situation
The Sixth Pentacle: Cursing and Affliction
The Sixth Pentacle causes the adversary to be afflicted and tormented by evil spirits. Its operation is one of cursing — of directing adversarial intelligences against the specific person to produce sustained suffering, disturbance, and spiritual oppression. The Sixth Pentacle does not merely constrain the adversary; it actively harms them through sustained spiritual attack.
The Sixth Pentacle is most appropriate when:
- The adversary's harmful actions have been so severe that mere binding is insufficient
- The goal is the adversary's personal affliction and suffering rather than merely their compliance
- Binding has been tried and has proven insufficient to stop the harm
- The practitioner requires an instrument of active harm rather than passive constraint
- The situation demands that the adversary experience the consequences of their actions through sustained spiritual pressure
The Escalation Path
The natural escalation path in adversarial situations is: binding first (Second Pentacle), cursing second (Sixth Pentacle), seismic collapse last (Seventh Pentacle). Begin with the least harmful approach that addresses the situation; escalate only when the lesser approach has proven insufficient. This escalation path reflects the tradition's understanding that maximum force should be reserved for situations that genuinely require it.

Binding constrains. Cursing afflicts. The Second Pentacle stops the adversary; the Sixth Pentacle makes them suffer. Choose the scale of force that matches the scale of the harm they have caused.
