The Desire Ritual: Get Honest About What You Actually Want at the New Moon
Share
Most people do not know what they actually want. They know what they think they should want, what they have been told is worth wanting, what sounds good to say they want, and what they want to want — but the genuine desire, the one that is actually alive in them beneath the layers of should and ought and must, is frequently neither accessed nor acknowledged in the ordinary course of the life. The Desire ritual is the new moon practice of getting honest about this genuine desire: stripping away the performed version and arriving at what is actually, truly, honestly wanted.
This honesty is not indulgence. It is the prerequisite for effective intention-setting. An intention planted at the new moon that is rooted in genuine desire has the energy of that desire available to power its growth through the waxing weeks. An intention planted at the new moon that is rooted in "should" or borrowed aspiration has no such energy behind it, which is why so many carefully set new moon intentions wither without growing: they were never genuinely wanted in the first place.
The Layers of Desire
Desire exists at multiple layers, and the Desire ritual works through all of them. The surface layer is what you say you want when someone asks: the socially acceptable, aspirationally appropriate version. Beneath that is what you privately hope for: the desire that is real but feels too vulnerable to express publicly. Beneath that is the genuine desire: the one that is embarrassingly simple or surprisingly large or completely at odds with the life you have constructed, the one that, if you are honest, has been present for a long time beneath everything else.
The Desire ritual is specifically designed to reach the genuine desire — not the surface version, and not the layer below the surface, but the actual bottom layer where the genuine wanting lives. The new moon's dark, interior quality supports this depth of access, and the tarot provides the mirror that reveals what the genuine desire actually is when the surface layers are removed.
Ritual Setup
Candle: Red or deep orange for the genuine vitality of desire; or pink for the heart's honest wanting. Some practitioners use red for the first part of the ritual (the honesty about genuine desire) and shift to gold for the second part (the planting of the desire as a genuine seed).
Crystals: Carnelian (for the genuine vitality and creative fire of desire), garnet (for the grounding of desire in the body rather than only the mind), rose quartz (for the heart's honest wanting), and labradorite (for seeing beneath the surface to what is genuinely present).
The Desire Tarot Spread
Card 1 — The surface desire: What do you say you want at this new moon? This card names the surface-layer desire — what is spoken, what is socially appropriate, what is already articulated. It is the starting point of the ritual, not its destination.
Card 2 — The desire beneath the desire: What is the desire beneath the surface desire? What is the genuine wanting that the surface desire is pointing toward but not quite naming? This card moves one layer deeper than the surface articulation.
Card 3 — The genuine desire: What is the honest, unperformed, actual desire that is alive in you at this new moon? This card names the bottom layer — the genuine wanting that may be simpler, larger, more vulnerable, or more surprising than the surface desire would suggest.
Card 4 — Why this desire has been unexpressed: Why has the genuine desire remained beneath the surface? What has made it feel too vulnerable, too large, too simple, or too much to acknowledge and plant as a genuine intention? This card names the specific resistance that has been keeping the genuine desire in the shadow of the performed desire.
Card 5 — What genuine desire makes possible: When the genuine desire is acknowledged and planted as a genuine intention, what becomes possible that was not possible while the surface desire was receiving all the attention? This card names what the honest desire opens.
The Three-Step Ritual Flow
Step 1: The Desire Inventory. Write three lists, in order: what you say you want, what you privately hope for, and what you actually want if you are completely honest. The three lists are almost never identical, and the differences between them are some of the most useful information the Desire ritual produces.
Step 2: The Genuine Desire Statement. Working with Card 3 and the bottom of your desire inventory, write the genuine desire in one honest sentence: "What I actually want is [honest statement of genuine desire]." Write it without qualification, without justification, and without the apology that often accompanies genuine desire when it is first honestly acknowledged.
Step 3: The Planting. Speak the genuine desire statement aloud in the dark moon's silence: three times, with increasing confidence and decreasing apology. The third time, say it as a genuine declaration of what is true in you, without hedging, without the qualification that has been keeping the genuine desire from being fully planted. This declaration, spoken in the new moon's dark and amplifying energy, is the planting of the genuine desire as the new moon's most honest seed.
