Two of the fifteen bibliomancy methods in the guide occupy opposite ends of the spectrum between brevity and richness: the Dictionary Method produces a single word as the oracle's response, while the Poetry Sortes produces a complete poem or substantial poetic passage. Both methods are extremely effective, and understanding what each is best suited for — and why — will help you choose between them when both seem appropriate.
The Dictionary Method: The Single-Word Oracle
The Dictionary Method is bibliomancy at its most compressed: a standard dictionary (not a thesaurus, not a specialized glossary, but a comprehensive language dictionary) opened at random, with the eye falling on a single word that serves as the oracle's complete response. The word is taken as the oracle's message about the question: not the definition, not the etymology, not the example sentences, but the word itself — the sound of it, its associations, its range of meanings, its connotations, the image or feeling it triggers in the questioning consciousness.
When to use the Dictionary Method: The Dictionary Method is most effective for questions that need a single clarifying concept rather than a nuanced narrative: "What is the essential quality of this situation?" "What is the most important thing I need to bring to this decision?" "What is the name of what I am feeling?" It is also useful for moments when the Classical Opening or another method has produced a passage that is complex or ambiguous and a single word of clarification is needed to anchor the interpretation.
It is less appropriate for complex questions with many dimensions, for emotional healing work, or for ceremonial purposes. For those, the other methods are better suited.
The complete Dictionary Method:
Step 1: Hold the dictionary closed and bring your question to full presence as for the Classical Opening.
Step 2: Open the dictionary at random and, without looking, place your finger on the open page.
Step 3: Open your eyes and read the word nearest your finger. This is the oracle's word. Read only the word; resist the impulse to immediately read its definition.
Step 4: Sit with the word for sixty seconds before doing anything else. Say it aloud. Notice its sound, its weight, its associations. What does it make you think of? What does it feel like in the body when you say it?
Step 5: Read the definition. Then return to the word itself. "If this word is the most accurate single description of my question, my situation, or the quality I most need right now, what is it saying?"
The Dictionary Method produces surprising results with a regularity that exceeds what chance alone should produce. The word that arrives often has the quality of a name for something that was present in the situation but unnamed — and naming it produces the specific clarification the questioner needed.
The Poetry Sortes: Poetry Collections as Oracular Decks
The Poetry Sortes treats a poetry collection as an oracular deck: each poem in the collection is a distinct card, and the randomly opened poem is the reading. This method occupies the richest end of the bibliomantic spectrum: where the Dictionary Method provides a single word, the Poetry Sortes provides a complete poetic argument, image, and emotional arc, organized by a poet whose entire attention was on saying something true about the human experience in concentrated language.

Step 1: Choose your collection. Prepare the question as for the Classical Opening.
Step 2: Open the collection at random. Read the complete poem that appears on the opened page — from title to final line, without stopping to interpret.
Step 3: Read the poem a second time, this time slowly and aloud. The difference between reading silently and aloud is significant in Poetry Sortes work; the sound of the poem activates a different quality of reception than the silent reading.
Step 4: Identify the line or image that caught your attention most fully during the two readings. This is the oracle's specific message within the poem's broader response.
Step 5: The Poetry Sortes interpretation prompt: "What is this poem saying about my question? And what is the specific line that the poem most wants me to hear?"
The Poetry Sortes is the bibliomantic method most suitable for practitioners who already have a deep relationship with poetry as a contemplative practice.
