Ehwaz Rune Meditation: Riding with Your Higher Self & Sacred Partnership

Ehwaz Rune Meditation: Riding with Your Higher Self & Sacred Partnership

By Nicole Lau

Ehwaz (ᛖ) is the rune of the horse — of the sacred bond between horse and rider, of the swift and harmonious movement that becomes possible when two beings are perfectly attuned to each other. To meditate with Ehwaz is to experience this attunement: to feel the fluid, forward-moving energy of the perfect partnership, to connect with the horse as a symbol of the unconscious mind and the body's wisdom, and to discover the quality of movement that becomes possible when the conscious and unconscious aspects of yourself are moving together in perfect harmony.

This meditation is particularly powerful for: strengthening the bond between the conscious and unconscious minds, developing the sensitivity and trust that make genuine partnership possible, accessing the body's wisdom and the unconscious mind's guidance, preparing for any significant journey or forward movement, and working with the shamanic tradition of the horse as the vehicle of the soul's journey.

Before You Begin

Light a white or golden candle. If you have a small amount of oats or grain, place it before you as an offering to the horse energy. If you have a Ehwaz rune stone or amulet, hold it in both hands. Sit in a position that allows you to feel your hips and thighs — the rider's points of contact with the horse. Take a moment to feel the weight of your body, the solidity of your seat — you are the rider, preparing to meet your horse.

Take three rhythmic breaths — like the steady rhythm of hoofbeats, like the breath of the horse at a steady canter. Feel the rhythm in your body. This is Ehwaz's entry point: the rhythm that connects, the steady forward movement that is the rune's fundamental nature.

Part One: Meeting the Horse

Close your eyes. In your mind's eye, find yourself standing in a Norse meadow at dawn — the grass still wet with dew, the air fresh and clear. Before you stands a horse — your horse, the horse that is the embodiment of your unconscious mind, your body's wisdom, your deeper self.

Take a moment to simply see this horse. What does it look like? What is its color, its size, its quality of presence? Is it calm or restless, eager or wary? The horse's appearance and demeanor tell you something about the current state of your unconscious mind and your relationship with your deeper self.

Approach the horse slowly, with the open, non-threatening body language of the experienced horseperson. Breathe slowly and steadily. Extend your hand, palm up, and let the horse come to you rather than reaching for it. This is the first lesson of Ehwaz: in genuine partnership, you do not force; you invite.

Feel the horse's breath on your hand — warm, moist, alive. This is the breath of your deeper self, acknowledging your presence. Breathe back — long, slow, warm — the way you would breathe into a horse's nostrils to establish trust. Feel the bond forming between you: the recognition of two beings who belong together.

Part Two: The Ride

When the horse is ready — when you feel the invitation in its stillness — mount. Feel yourself on the horse's back: the warmth of the animal beneath you, the subtle movement of its breathing, the aliveness of the being you are now partnered with.

Begin to move. At first, a walk — slow, deliberate, feeling the horse's movement beneath you and learning to move with it rather than against it. The rider who fights the horse's movement is uncomfortable and ineffective; the rider who flows with it becomes part of the horse's movement, and the two move as one.

Feel yourself learning to flow with your horse — with your deeper self, your unconscious mind, your body's wisdom. Where have you been fighting this deeper self? Where have you been trying to force a direction that your deeper nature does not want to go? Feel the horse's gentle resistance to these forced directions, and feel what happens when you release the force and simply ask.

Now — a canter. Feel the rhythm of the three-beat gait, the surge of forward movement, the wind in your face. This is Ehwaz at full expression: the conscious and unconscious minds moving together in perfect harmony, covering ground swiftly and effortlessly, going somewhere together that neither could reach alone.

Part Three: The Destination

As you ride, ask your horse: "Where do you want to take me? What direction does my deeper self want to move in?" Let the horse choose the direction — feel where it wants to go, what it is drawn toward. This is the unconscious mind's guidance: not the analytical mind's plan, but the deeper self's knowing of where the soul needs to go.

Follow the horse's lead. Trust the direction it chooses, even if it is not the direction your analytical mind would have chosen. The horse knows the terrain of the inner world in ways that the rider cannot; its instincts are reliable guides to what the soul most needs.

Where does the horse take you? What do you find at the destination? Receive whatever arises — images, feelings, knowings, encounters. This is the shamanic dimension of Ehwaz: the horse as the vehicle of the soul's journey to places that the ordinary mind cannot reach.

Part Four: The Return

When the journey feels complete, turn the horse back toward the starting point. Feel the quality of the return — the satisfaction of the journey completed, the bond between horse and rider deepened by the shared experience. Thank your horse for the journey, for its trust, for its guidance.

Dismount slowly and deliberately. Stand beside your horse for a moment — feel the warmth of its presence, the aliveness of the bond between you. This bond does not end when the meditation ends; your horse — your deeper self — is always present, always available, always ready to carry you where you need to go.

Part Five: The Ehwaz Galdr

With the horse energy fully present and the partnership bond clearly felt, begin the Galdr. Take a rhythmic breath — like hoofbeats. On the exhale, chant: "Ehhhh-waz" — rhythmic, forward-moving, like the steady canter of the horse. The “Eh” should resonate in your chest; the “waz” should move forward, like the horse's stride carrying you toward the horizon.

Chant nine times. With each repetition, feel the partnership bond growing stronger, the attunement between conscious and unconscious deepening, the forward movement becoming more fluid and effortless. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of harmonious momentum — the feeling of moving swiftly and surely toward where you need to go, carried by a partnership that is greater than either part alone.

Part Six: Closing

After the Galdr, sit quietly for a few minutes. Feel the quality of Ehwaz's energy — the rhythmic forward movement, the warmth of the partnership bond, the fluid attunement of two beings moving as one. Let this feeling settle into your body as a reference point for what genuine partnership feels like.

Open your eyes slowly. Carry the horse energy with you — the sensitivity, the trust, the forward momentum of the perfect partnership.

Ehwaz Meditation for Specific Situations

For strengthening partnerships: Perform the full meditation with a specific partner in mind — imagining them as a second rider on the horse, or as the horse itself. Feel the quality of the partnership, where it flows easily and where it is resistant, and ask Ehwaz what is needed to bring it into greater harmony.

Before journeys: A brief Ehwaz practice — Part Two and the Galdr — before any significant journey activates the swift, harmonious movement energy that Ehwaz carries and aligns you with the forward momentum of the journey.

For accessing unconscious wisdom: When you need guidance from your deeper self, perform Part Three of this meditation — letting the horse choose the direction. The unconscious mind's guidance is often more accurate than the analytical mind's plans, and Ehwaz provides a reliable vehicle for accessing it.

Deepen your Ehwaz meditation with the Seidr Trance: Norse Shamanic Journey Audio — which guides you into the deep trance states where the horse as shamanic vehicle is most fully accessible. For the ancestral dimension of Norse horse traditions, Ancestral Runes: Viking Lineage Connection Audio connects you with the wisdom of your Norse ancestors who honored the horse as a sacred animal and divine companion. There is a deep resonance in this rune that calls to something ancient within us — the Void Whisper Audio carries the same hushed, primordial frequency of the subconscious depths that the horse traverses, while the Emotional Filter Ritual Kit offers a way to clear the inner landscape so that the partnership between self and soul can move without obstruction. For those drawn to the shamanic journeying inherent in Ehwaz, the Shadow Work Tarot becomes a companion map for the territories the horse reveals, and the The 52-Week Tarot Journey provides a full year of dialogue with the deeper self — a sustained ride that deepens the bond with each turn of the card. And when the soul needs stillness before the next gallop, the Void of Course Moon Audio offers that sacred pause, the rest that makes the forward motion possible.
