Eihwaz Rune Amulet: Crafting Norse Yew & Death-Rebirth Talismans

By Nicole Lau
Eihwaz (ᛇ) — the thirteenth rune of the Elder Futhark — is the rune of the yew tree, of the axis that connects the worlds, of the endurance that passes through death and emerges transformed. Its name means "yew," and the yew is one of the most extraordinary trees in the Norse world: simultaneously the most poisonous and the most long-lived of European trees, capable of living for thousands of years, dying and rerooting from its own fallen branches, its red berries beautiful and deadly. The yew is the tree of death and rebirth, of the threshold between worlds, of the endurance that outlasts everything.
Eihwaz is unique among the Elder Futhark runes — it is the central rune of the system, the axis around which the other runes turn, just as Yggdrasil is the axis around which the nine worlds turn. Crafting an Eihwaz amulet is an act of connecting to this central axis — of calling in the energy of the World Tree's endurance, of the protection that comes from being rooted in the deepest reality, and of the transformation that passes through death to reach new life.
Understanding Eihwaz's Amulet Energy
Eihwaz (ᛇ) operates at the level of the axis mundi — the central pillar that connects all worlds, that provides the stable center around which all change occurs. Its energy is the energy of the yew tree: ancient, enduring, simultaneously alive and dead, rooted in the earth and reaching into the sky, its roots in Hel and its branches in Asgard.
Eihwaz is one of the most powerful protection runes in the Elder Futhark — not the active protection of Algiz or the aggressive protection of Thurisaz, but the deep, imperturbable protection of something so ancient and so rooted that nothing can truly threaten it. An Eihwaz amulet protects by connecting you to this deep rootedness, by anchoring you to the axis of reality itself.
Eihwaz amulets are particularly effective for: deep protection during periods of significant transformation or danger, navigating the threshold between life and death (literal or metaphorical), connecting to the ancestors and the wisdom of the deep past, endurance through the most extreme challenges, shamanic and underworld journeying, and any situation requiring the stability of the axis that holds all worlds in place.
Choosing Your Materials
Wood
Yew (Taxus baccata) is the only appropriate wood for an Eihwaz amulet — there is no substitute. The yew is Eihwaz's sacred tree, its living embodiment, the physical expression of everything the rune represents. Work only with naturally fallen yew wood or yew prunings — never cut a living yew branch for magical work. The yew's wood is extraordinarily dense and hard, resistant to decay, and carries a quality of ancient, imperturbable presence that is immediately palpable when you hold it.
Important note: All parts of the yew tree except the red flesh of the berry are highly toxic. Work with yew wood carefully, wash your hands after handling it, and never ingest any part of the tree.
Stone
The best stones for Eihwaz amulets are those that carry the energy of deep protection, transformation, and connection to the underworld: black obsidian (volcanic glass, formed in the earth's deepest fires, cuts through illusion and connects to the underworld), jet (fossilized wood, the stone of mourning and the ancestors, deeply connected to the threshold between life and death), labradorite (the stone of transformation and the magic that emerges from the threshold), and dark garnet (deep protection and the endurance of the life force through extreme challenge).
Bone
Bone is Eihwaz's most characteristic material — the substance that endures after death, that carries the memory of the living being long after the flesh has returned to earth. A small piece of ethically sourced bone (from an animal that died naturally) carved with Eihwaz is one of the most powerful forms of this amulet. Bone connects the amulet directly to Eihwaz's energy of death-and-endurance.
The Eihwaz Amulet Crafting Ritual
Timing
Craft your Eihwaz amulet at Samhain (October 31st – November 1st) — the Norse festival of the dead, when the veil between worlds is thinnest and the energy of the threshold is most accessible. The winter solstice is also appropriate — the longest night, the deepest point of the year's descent toward death before the return of light. Midnight, the hour of the threshold, is ideal.
Sacred Space Preparation
Set up your workspace with Eihwaz's energy: ancient, deep, connected to the threshold. Place a black or dark green candle. Have representations of your ancestors present if possible — photographs, objects that belonged to them, or simply their names written on paper. Eihwaz's energy is amplified by conscious connection to the ancestral line. Work in near-darkness; Eihwaz does not work in bright light.
Step 1: Connecting to the Axis
Before carving, spend a few minutes in the following visualization: feel yourself as a tree — your roots going deep into the earth, into the underworld, into the realm of the ancestors and the dead. Your trunk is your body, solid and present in the middle world. Your branches reach upward into the sky, into the realm of the gods and the cosmic. Feel the axis of your being — the vertical line that connects all three worlds through your body. This is Eihwaz's energy: you are the World Tree in miniature.
Step 2: Carving the Rune
The Eihwaz rune (ᛇ) consists of a vertical line with diagonal branches pointing in opposite directions — one slanting upward to the left, the other slanting downward to the right — like a tree whose branches reach both upward and downward, connecting the worlds above and below. Carve it with the slow, deliberate patience of the yew tree itself — which grows almost imperceptibly slowly but endures for millennia. As you carve, chant the Eihwaz Galdr: "Eihwaz, Eihwaz, Eihwaz" — let the sound be deep, resonant, ancient. Feel it vibrating in your chest and belly, in the roots of your being.
Step 3: Coloring the Rune
Color Eihwaz with dark green (for the yew's evergreen endurance, the life that persists through winter and death) or black (for the underworld, the threshold, the deep protection of the axis). As you apply the color, say: "I color this rune with [dark green/black], the color of the yew and the deep earth. Let it be a pillar of the axis, a root in the underworld, a branch in the sky, a protection that endures through all transformation."
Step 4: Activation with Earth
Press the amulet into a handful of earth — ideally earth from near a yew tree, or from a place that feels ancient and deeply rooted. Say: "Eihwaz, I call your ancient endurance into this amulet. Let it be rooted in the deepest earth, reaching to the highest sky, standing firm at the axis of all worlds. By the yew that lives for a thousand years, this amulet is alive with your protection. So it is."
Step 5: Ancestral Blessing
Hold the amulet and speak the names of your ancestors — as many generations back as you know. Ask them to bless the amulet with their endurance, their wisdom, their protection from the other side of the threshold. Eihwaz connects the living to the dead; this ancestral blessing activates that connection in the amulet.
Wearing and Caring for Your Eihwaz Amulet
Wear your Eihwaz amulet during periods of significant transformation, danger, or threshold-crossing — when you need the deep protection of the axis and the endurance of the yew. It is particularly powerful during shamanic journeying, ancestor work, and any practice that involves conscious engagement with the threshold between worlds.
Store your Eihwaz amulet wrapped in dark cloth when not in use. Recharge it at Samhain each year by leaving it overnight at the base of a yew tree if possible, or by holding it during ancestor meditation.
Eihwaz Amulet Variations
Ancestor Eihwaz: Carve Eihwaz on a piece of jet or bone and place it on your ancestor altar. This creates a permanent energetic connection between your living practice and the wisdom of your ancestral line.
Protection Eihwaz: Carve Eihwaz on a piece of yew wood and place it at the threshold of your home — the doorway between the outer world and your inner sanctuary. Eihwaz's deep protection guards the threshold.
Bind Rune Endurance: Combine Eihwaz (ᛇ) with Algiz (ᛉ) for the protection of the World Tree combined with divine guardianship, or with Berkano (ᛒ) for the death-and-rebirth cycle in its most complete expression — the yew that dies and reroots, the seed that passes through the earth to become new life.
Activate your Eihwaz amulet with Galdr chanting — the ancient Norse vocal practice that amplifies runic energy through sound. Galdr Chanting: Rune Activation Audio guides you through the complete Galdr practice for all 24 Elder Futhark runes, including Eihwaz's deep, resonant vocal frequencies of ancient endurance. For the full consecration ceremony, Rune Consecration: Blessing Your Set Audio provides a complete guided ritual for activating your Eihwaz amulet with the full power of the World Tree's axis. There is something profoundly grounding about anchoring runic practice in the enduring axis—the same ancient threshold that the yew embodies—and the Void Whisper Audio can help attune you to that deep, subterranean stillness, while Inner Sunlight Audio supports the gentle radiance that arises from such rootedness. For those drawn to the protective and transformative qualities of the rune itself, the Shadow Work Tarot offers a way to meet the thresholds within, and Jung and the Archetype deepens the understanding of how these symbols bridge the conscious and unconscious. Carrying the yew's endurance into daily practice, the Emotional Filter Ritual Kit provides a tangible way to clear what no longer serves the axis.
