Eihwaz Rune Meditation: Journeying the World Tree & Death-Rebirth Threshold

Eihwaz (ᛇ) is the rune of the yew tree — of the axis that connects all worlds, of the endurance that passes through death and emerges transformed, of the ancient, imperturbable presence that stands at the center of all things. To meditate with Eihwaz is to journey the World Tree: to feel yourself as the axis that connects the underworld of the ancestors, the middle world of the living, and the upper world of the gods. This is one of the most profound meditations in the runic system — and one of the most demanding. Eihwaz does not offer comfort; it offers depth.

This meditation is particularly powerful for: connecting with the ancestors and receiving their wisdom, navigating significant life transitions that involve a form of death and rebirth, developing the deep rootedness that provides stability through extreme change, shamanic journeying through the nine worlds, and working with the threshold between life and death in any of its forms.

Before You Begin

Light a black or dark green candle. Place representations of your ancestors before you if you have them. Have a piece of yew wood or a dark stone to hold if possible. Lower the temperature of your space if you can — Eihwaz works in cool, dark conditions. Sit upright with your spine straight — you are the World Tree; your spine is the axis.

Take nine slow, deep breaths — one for each of the nine worlds that Yggdrasil connects. With each breath, feel your spine lengthening slightly, your roots going deeper, your crown reaching higher. By the ninth breath, you should feel a quality of vertical alignment — of being the axis between worlds.

Part One: Becoming the World Tree

Close your eyes. Feel your body as a tree — specifically, as the yew tree Yggdrasil. Your feet and legs are the roots, going deep into the earth, into the underworld, into the realm of Hel and the ancestors. Your torso is the trunk, solid and present in the middle world of Midgard. Your arms and head are the branches, reaching upward into the sky, into the realm of the gods in Asgard.

Feel the three worlds simultaneously: the cool darkness of the roots in the underworld, the solid warmth of the trunk in the middle world, the bright openness of the branches in the upper world. You are the axis that connects them all. Nothing can move you from this center; you are the World Tree, and the World Tree stands at the center of all things.

Feel the energy moving through you: from the roots upward, carrying the wisdom of the ancestors and the deep earth; from the branches downward, carrying the light of the gods and the cosmic intelligence. You are the channel through which these energies meet and exchange. This is Eihwaz's fundamental gift: the experience of being the axis, the center, the stable point around which all change occurs.

Part Two: The Descent

From your position as the World Tree, allow your awareness to travel downward — down through the roots, into the underworld. This is not a frightening journey; it is a homecoming. The underworld is not a place of punishment in Norse cosmology; it is the realm of the ancestors, of the wisdom that has been accumulated through all the generations of your lineage.

As you descend, you may become aware of presences — the ancestors who have gone before you, who are waiting in the roots of the World Tree. They are not lost; they are simply on the other side of the threshold. Ask them: "What wisdom do you carry for me? What do I need to know from the deep past?"

Receive whatever comes — images, feelings, words, a quality of presence. The ancestors do not always speak in words; they may communicate through sensation, through sudden knowing, through the quality of the darkness itself. Trust what you receive.

Part Three: The Threshold

At the deepest point of your descent, you encounter the threshold — the boundary between the living and the dead, between what has been and what will be, between the old form and the new. This threshold is Eihwaz's central mystery: the place where the yew tree is simultaneously alive and dead, where the old form must die for the new form to emerge.

Bring to mind whatever in your life is at this threshold — whatever is dying so that something new can be born, whatever old form must be released for the new form to emerge. Hold it at the threshold and ask Eihwaz: "What must die here? And what will be born from this death?"

The answer may be immediate or it may come slowly, like the yew tree's growth. Trust the timing. Eihwaz does not rush.

Part Four: The Ascent

Having received the wisdom of the underworld and the threshold, allow your awareness to travel upward — up through the trunk, into the branches, toward the upper world. Feel the quality of the upper world: vast, luminous, the realm of the cosmic intelligence that governs the larger patterns of existence.

From this height, look down at your life — at the full arc of your journey from the perspective of the World Tree's crown. What patterns do you see that are invisible from the middle world? What is the larger shape of your life's story? What is the cosmic intelligence trying to accomplish through the specific circumstances of your existence?

Receive whatever perspective comes. Then begin the descent back to the middle world — carrying the wisdom of both the underworld and the upper world back into the realm of the living.

Part Five: The Eihwaz Galdr

Back in the middle world, fully present in your body as the World Tree, begin the Galdr. Take a deep breath that fills your entire body from roots to crown. On the exhale, chant: "Eiiiih-waz" — deep, resonant, ancient. The “Ei” should vibrate in your chest; the “waz” should resonate in your belly and roots. Feel the sound moving through your entire body like the sap of the World Tree.

Chant nine times — one for each of the nine worlds. With each repetition, feel your connection to the axis deepening, your roots going deeper, your branches reaching higher, your trunk becoming more solid and imperturbable. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of ancient, settled presence — the feeling of being the World Tree, of being the axis that cannot be moved.

Part Six: Closing

After the Galdr, spend a few minutes simply being the World Tree — rooted, present, connected to all worlds simultaneously. Feel the protection of this position: nothing can truly threaten the axis of all worlds. You are safe not because nothing can touch you, but because you are rooted in something deeper than anything that might threaten you.

When you are ready, feel yourself returning to your ordinary human form — still carrying the memory of the World Tree within you, still connected to the axis, but present in your specific human body and life. Take three grounding breaths. Open your eyes slowly.

Eihwaz Meditation for Specific Situations

For ancestor connection: Focus the meditation on Part Two, spending extended time in the underworld with the ancestors. This is one of the most direct methods of ancestral communication available in the Norse tradition.
