Ein Soph Aur: Working with Infinite Light in Kabbalistic Meditation
Share
At the summit of the Kabbalistic system — beyond the ten Sephiroth, beyond the Tree of Life itself, beyond all structure, all form, and all conceptual understanding — lies the most profound concept in all of Kabbalistic thought: Ein Soph Aur, the Infinite Light. To work with Ein Soph Aur in meditation is to approach the absolute limit of what human consciousness can experience and still return to ordinary awareness — to touch, however briefly, the infinite divine reality from which all existence emerges and to which all existence ultimately returns.
Understanding Ein Soph: The Limitless
The Kabbalistic tradition begins not with the Tree of Life but with what lies beyond it — the infinite divine reality that the Tree of Life maps but cannot contain. This infinite divine reality is described through three progressive concepts:
Ein (Nothing / No-Thing) — The divine reality before it has taken any form whatsoever — pure being without any specific quality of being. It is the divine reality that cannot be named, described, or conceived, because any name, description, or concept would limit it, and the infinite cannot be limited.
Ein Soph (The Limitless) — The infinite divine reality understood in terms of its boundlessness and absolute freedom from any limitation. Ein Soph is not merely very large or very powerful; it is literally without limit, without boundary, without end — the infinite ocean from which the finite world emerges without diminishing the ocean in any way.
Ein Soph Aur (The Infinite Light) — The infinite divine reality understood in terms of its luminous, radiant, self-revealing quality. Ein Soph Aur is the divine light that illuminates all existence, the source of all consciousness, all awareness, and all perception — the primordial divine light that preceded all physical creation and is the source of all subsequent light, physical and spiritual.
These three concepts are not three separate realities but three ways of approaching the single infinite divine reality: as pure being (Ein), as infinite boundlessness (Ein Soph), and as infinite luminous awareness (Ein Soph Aur).
The Relationship Between Ein Soph Aur and the Tree of Life
The Tree of Life is not Ein Soph Aur itself; it is the structure through which Ein Soph Aur becomes accessible to finite consciousness. The ten Sephiroth are the ten primary ways in which the infinite divine light differentiates itself into specific qualities that finite consciousness can perceive, understand, and work with.
The process by which Ein Soph Aur becomes the Tree of Life is described in the Lurianic concept of Tzimtzum — the divine contraction or withdrawal. According to Luria, the infinite divine light originally filled all space. In order to create a finite world, the divine contracted — withdrew its infinite light from a specific region, creating a primordial void (the Chalal) within which creation could occur. Into this void, the divine sent a single ray of its infinite light — the Kav — which became the source of the Tree of Life and all subsequent creation.
Meditation on Ein Soph Aur is therefore a practice of reversing the Tzimtzum within one's own consciousness — of allowing the contracted, finite consciousness to expand back toward the infinite divine light from which it emerged.
The Three Veils of Negative Existence
In the Hermetic Kabbalistic tradition, Ein, Ein Soph, and Ein Soph Aur are called the Three Veils of Negative Existence — the three successive layers of divine reality that lie beyond the Tree of Life. They are called "veils" because they conceal the absolute divine reality from ordinary consciousness, and "negative" because they are defined by what they are not rather than what they are.
The Three Veils are arranged above Kether: Ein Soph Aur immediately above Kether, Ein Soph above Ein Soph Aur, and Ein above Ein Soph. The practitioner who reaches Kether — the crown of the Tree, the point of divine unity — has not yet reached Ein Soph Aur. Kether is still a differentiation, still a specific quality of divine energy, still within the realm of the conceivable. Ein Soph Aur lies beyond even Kether — beyond all differentiation, all description, and all conception.
Meditation on Ein Soph Aur: The Complete Practice
Preparation
Perform the LBRP and the Middle Pillar Exercise to purify and align consciousness before beginning. Establish deep meditative calm through sustained breath work. The body should be completely relaxed, the mind completely still, and consciousness completely present before attempting to approach Ein Soph Aur.
Ascending the Tree
Begin by meditating on Malkuth — the physical world, the body, the earth. Then gradually ascend the Middle Pillar, moving through Yesod, Tiphareth, Daath, and finally Kether. At each Sephirah, spend time fully experiencing its specific quality of divine consciousness before moving to the next. The ascent should be gradual and organic — not rushed, not forced.
Resting in Kether
When you reach Kether, rest in the quality of divine unity it represents — the brilliant white light of the crown, the point of absolute oneness from which all the Sephiroth emerge. Allow consciousness to settle fully into this quality before attempting to move beyond it.
Approaching the Veils
From Kether, turn attention upward — not toward another Sephirah, but toward the infinite space above the crown, beyond all structure and form. Visualize the brilliant white light of Kether gradually expanding and intensifying, becoming brighter and more radiant until it fills all of consciousness. This is the approach to Ein Soph Aur — the expansion of divine light beyond all boundaries and limitations.
Dissolution into the Infinite Light
As the light expands beyond all boundaries, allow the sense of individual self to gradually dissolve into it — not through effort or force, but through a gentle, willing release of the boundaries that define individual consciousness. The practitioner does not disappear; rather, the boundaries between individual consciousness and infinite divine consciousness become transparent, allowing the practitioner to experience, however briefly, the quality of infinite divine awareness that is Ein Soph Aur.
This experience — when it occurs — is beyond description. The Kabbalistic tradition uses the language of light, silence, infinite expansion, and absolute peace to gesture toward it, while acknowledging that no language can capture it. It is the experience the tradition calls Devekut — cleaving to God — the direct, unmediated experience of divine reality that is the ultimate goal of all Kabbalistic practice.
The Return
After the experience of Ein Soph Aur, the practitioner must return to ordinary consciousness through the same path by which they ascended: descending through Kether, Daath, Tiphareth, Yesod, and Malkuth, grounding the experience in the physical body and the material world. This return is as important as the ascent — the experience must be integrated into ordinary consciousness rather than remaining as a dissociated peak experience.
The Fruits of Ein Soph Aur Meditation
Practitioners who work regularly with Ein Soph Aur meditation report transformative effects that develop progressively over time: profound and unshakeable peace rooted in direct experience of the infinite divine reality; expanded perspective that holds life's challenges against the background of the infinite; increased compassion arising from the recognition that all beings are expressions of the same infinite light; enhanced magical power from touching the source beyond all individual Sephiroth; and genuine humility — not self-deprecation, but the natural humility of one who has seen the infinite and knows their place within it.
Ein Soph Aur and the Kabbalistic Tradition of Devekut
The concept of Devekut — cleaving to God, adhesion to the divine — is the highest ideal of Jewish mysticism and the ultimate goal of all Kabbalistic practice. Devekut is not a momentary peak experience but a sustained quality of consciousness in which the practitioner maintains continuous awareness of the divine presence underlying all experience. The Baal Shem Tov, the founder of Hasidic Judaism, taught that Devekut is available in every moment and every activity — that the infinite divine light of Ein Soph Aur is not only accessible in deep meditation but is the ever-present ground of all experience, waiting to be recognized in every breath, every thought, and every action.
Ein Soph Aur meditation is the formal practice that cultivates this recognition — that trains the consciousness to perceive the infinite divine light that is always already present, beneath and within all finite appearances. The practitioner who works consistently with this meditation gradually develops the capacity for Devekut in ordinary life — the ability to perceive the infinite in the finite, the eternal in the temporal, and the divine in the human.
Tzimtzum and the Paradox of Creation
The Lurianic concept of Tzimtzum presents one of the most profound paradoxes in all of religious thought: if Ein Soph Aur is truly infinite and fills all space, how can a finite world exist? Luria's answer — that the infinite contracted to make room for the finite — is not merely a cosmological theory but a description of the fundamental structure of all existence. The finite world exists within a space created by the withdrawal of the infinite; it is, in a sense, a bubble of finitude within the infinite ocean of Ein Soph Aur.
This understanding has profound implications for magical practice. It means that the material world is not separate from the divine but is a specific mode of the divine — a region in which the infinite has temporarily withdrawn to allow finite consciousness to exist and develop. Kabbalistic magic is, in this understanding, the art of working within this contracted space in ways that gradually expand the practitioner's consciousness back toward the infinite — of using the finite tools of ritual, visualization, and divine name vibration to touch the infinite light that surrounds and permeates the finite world.

Ein Soph Aur and the Purpose of Kabbalistic Practice
The concept of Ein Soph Aur reveals the ultimate purpose of all Kabbalistic practice — not the acquisition of magical power, not the development of psychic abilities, not even the cultivation of virtue and wisdom, but the direct experience of the infinite divine reality from which all existence emerges and to which all existence ultimately returns. Every practice in the Kabbalistic tradition — the LBRP, the Middle Pillar Exercise, pathworking, divine name vibration, talisman creation, archangelic invocation — is, at its deepest level, a preparation for this ultimate experience: the moment in which finite human consciousness touches the infinite divine light of Ein Soph Aur and recognizes, in that touch, its own deepest nature.
The human soul is, in the Kabbalistic understanding, a spark of the divine light of Ein Soph Aur — a fragment of the infinite that has taken on finite form for the purpose of experiencing, knowing, and ultimately returning to the infinite source from which it came. Ein Soph Aur meditation is the practice of that return — the most direct and most profound expression of the Kabbalistic path of return to the divine source.
