How do we know what we know? For millennia, epistemology has been divided: rationalists claim reason, empiricists claim experience, constructivists claim social agreement. Each partial, each incomplete. Here I propose a unified theory: Convergence Epistemology - we know through multi-system convergence on invariant fixed points. This isn't synthesis of old theories but fundamental reconstruction of how knowledge works.
Traditional Epistemology: The Fragmented Landscape
Rationalism: Knowledge comes from reason, innate ideas, logical deduction. Truth is what reason proves. Problem: How does reason connect to reality? Rationalism alone leads to detached abstraction.
Empiricism: Knowledge comes from sensory experience, observation, induction. Truth is what observation confirms. Problem: How do we generalize from particular observations? Empiricism alone leads to radical skepticism.
Constructivism: Knowledge is constructed by mind/society, shaped by categories/paradigms/power. Truth is what our frameworks allow us to see. Problem: How do we distinguish better from worse constructions? Constructivism alone leads to relativism.
Convergence Epistemology: The Core Principles
Principle 1: Truth = Multi-System Convergence Point. A claim is true if and only if multiple independent knowledge systems converge on it. Truth is what survives multi-system interrogation.
Principle 2: Knowledge = Stable Internal Model. Knowledge is active construction of internal models that remain stable across contexts. Stability across contexts = knowledge.
Principle 3: Verification = Cross-System Consistency. We verify claims by checking if they're consistent across independent systems. If systems disagree, something is wrong.
Principle 4: Understanding = Alignment of Internal/External Topology. You understand when your internal model's structure matches reality's structure. Understanding is isomorphism between mental map and reality map.
Conclusion: A New Foundation for Knowing
Convergence Epistemology redefines truth, knowledge, verification, and understanding. It resolves ancient problems and unifies fragmented traditions. Most importantly: it's testable and converges with reality.
