Feng Shui Altar Placement: Where to Put Your Altar in Every Room
Share
The placement of an altar within a space is as important as the objects on it. Where the altar is positioned determines the quality of energy it receives from the room, the direction it faces, and the relationship between the altar's intention and the energetic qualities of the space it occupies. Feng shui — the ancient Chinese art of spatial arrangement — provides one of the most sophisticated and most practically useful frameworks for understanding altar placement, offering specific guidance for where to place each type of altar to maximize its power and alignment with the practitioner's intentions.
The Bagua Map and Altar Placement
The bagua map divides any space into nine areas, each governing a specific life domain: the north governs career and life path; the northeast governs knowledge and self-cultivation; the east governs family and health; the southeast governs abundance and prosperity; the south governs fame and reputation; the southwest governs love and relationships; the west governs creativity and children; the northwest governs helpful people and travel; and the center governs overall health and wellbeing. Placing an altar in the bagua area that corresponds to its intention amplifies the altar's power significantly.
Altar Placement by Type
Abundance altar: southeast corner of the home or the main living space — the wealth and prosperity area of the bagua. Love altar: southwest corner — the love and relationships area. Career altar: north area — the career and life path area. Healing altar: east area — the family and health area. Spiritual development altar: northeast area — the knowledge and self-cultivation area, or a dedicated meditation room. Ancestor altar: north area (traditional direction of the ancestors) or a quiet, private area of the home. Protection altar: near the main entrance of the home, facing the door.
General Placement Principles
Regardless of bagua placement, all altars benefit from: being placed at eye level or above (altars placed on the floor receive less energetic attention and accumulate less power); being placed against a solid wall (which provides energetic backing and support); being kept away from high-traffic areas where they will be frequently disturbed; and being placed where they will receive regular attention and engagement from the practitioner. An altar that is seen and engaged with daily accumulates power far more quickly than one that is tucked away and rarely visited.
