Fire Signs and the Wands Suit — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius as Expressions of Willpower

BY NICOLE LAU

The Astrology Series: Elements × Minor Arcana

Welcome to the Minor Arcana × Astrology series, where we map the four suits not as random categories, but as precise calculations of the same psychological patterns astrology identifies as elemental energies.

This isn't symbolic correspondence. This is recognizing that the same psychological constants astrology calls "elements" are what the Tarot suits calculate.

Each suit embodies a fundamental elemental pattern: Wands = Fire (willpower, action, vision), Cups = Water (emotion, intuition, flow), Swords = Air (thought, clarity, analysis), Pentacles = Earth (manifestation, building, grounding).

This series will reveal how each suit calculates the complete psychology of its element, and how the three signs of each element express different modalities of the same core energy.

We begin with Fire Signs and the Wands Suit—Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius as three expressions of willpower, action, and transformative energy.

Fire Element Psychology: The Core Pattern

In astrological psychology, Fire element represents the principle of action, willpower, vision, and self-expression through doing. This is not "being energetic" in a vague sense. This is a specific psychological pattern: initiating action from internal drive, expressing self through creative will, transforming through challenge and conquest, radiating energy outward.

The Wands suit calculates this exact pattern—every card from Ace to Ten maps a stage of fire consciousness, from initial spark to sustained radiance to spreading flame.

The Three Fire Signs: Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable Fire

Astrology divides each element into three modalities—Cardinal (initiating), Fixed (sustaining), Mutable (adapting). The three fire signs express fire in these three ways:

Aries (Cardinal Fire): The Initiating Spark - First ignition, raw impulse, pioneering action. Aries is fire as beginning, as breakthrough, as "I AM." Psychologically: pure willpower without refinement, courage without strategy, action without hesitation. Maps to: Ace/Two/Three of Wands (initial spark, planning, launching).

Leo (Fixed Fire): The Sustained Radiance - Steady burning, creative expression, confident presence. Leo is fire as sustained power, as radiant self, as "I CREATE." Psychologically: willpower channeled into creative expression, courage with confidence, action with style. Maps to: Four/Five/Six of Wands (celebration, competition, victory).

Sagittarius (Mutable Fire): The Spreading Flame - Expansive vision, philosophical seeking, adventurous exploration. Sagittarius is fire as expansion, as quest for meaning, as "I SEEK." Psychologically: willpower directed toward growth, courage to explore unknown, action as adventure. Maps to: Seven/Eight/Nine of Wands (defense, acceleration, persistence).

These three signs calculate the complete fire cycle: ignition (Aries), sustained burning (Leo), spreading and seeking (Sagittarius).

Aries and Early Wands: The Initiating Spark

Aries energy—cardinal fire—maps precisely to the early Wands cards (Ace, Two, Three). This is fire as pure initiation: Ace of Wands (the spark of will, raw potential, "I can do this"), Two of Wands (planning the conquest, vision of what's possible), Three of Wands (launching into action, ships leaving harbor).

Psychologically, Aries/Early Wands calculates: Prefrontal cortex goal-setting without overthinking, Dopamine reward anticipation driving action, Amygdala courage overriding fear, Testosterone/adrenaline creating action impulse.

The Aries pattern is action before perfection, courage before certainty, beginning before knowing the end. This is why Aries energy feels so fresh, impulsive, and pioneering—it's calculating the initiation phase of fire.

Leo and Middle Wands: The Sustained Radiance

Leo energy—fixed fire—maps precisely to the middle Wands cards (Four, Five, Six). This is fire as sustained power and creative expression: Four of Wands (celebration of achievement, stable fire), Five of Wands (competitive fire, testing strength), Six of Wands (victorious fire, recognition and radiance).

Psychologically, Leo/Middle Wands calculates: Sustained dopamine through creative expression, Confidence from established identity, Social recognition activating reward centers, Charisma as sustained energetic presence.

The Leo pattern is fire that doesn't just ignite but burns steadily, creating warmth and light for others. This is why Leo energy feels so radiant, confident, and performative—it's calculating the sustained expression phase of fire.

Sagittarius and Late Wands: The Spreading Flame

Sagittarius energy—mutable fire—maps precisely to the late Wands cards (Seven, Eight, Nine). This is fire as expansion and seeking: Seven of Wands (defending territory to expand further), Eight of Wands (rapid movement, fire spreading), Nine of Wands (persistent fire, refusing to be extinguished).

Psychologically, Sagittarius/Late Wands calculates: Prefrontal cortex seeking meaning and growth, Dopamine from exploration and learning, Resilience through philosophical perspective, Expansion drive overriding exhaustion.

The Sagittarius pattern is fire that seeks to spread, to explore, to find meaning beyond the immediate. This is why Sagittarius energy feels so adventurous, philosophical, and restless—it's calculating the expansion phase of fire.

The Ten of Wands: Fire's Burden and Completion

The Ten of Wands represents fire's completion—the burden of carrying all that fire has created. This maps to the shadow of all three fire signs: Aries exhausted from constant initiation, Leo burdened by need to maintain radiance, Sagittarius overwhelmed by endless seeking. The Ten shows that fire, unchecked, leads to burnout. This is why fire signs need the other elements—water to cool, earth to ground, air to give perspective.

Fire Sign Psychology: The Shared Core

All three fire signs (and all Wands cards) share core psychological patterns: Action-oriented (doing over being), Self-expressive (radiating identity outward), Vision-driven (seeing possibilities), Challenge-seeking (growth through conquest), Optimistic (believing in success).

Neurologically, fire consciousness activates: Prefrontal goal-setting and planning, Dopamine reward anticipation, Testosterone/adrenaline action hormones, Amygdala courage circuits.

This is why fire signs feel so similar despite their differences—they're calculating the same core pattern in three modalities.

Fire Signs Need Other Elements

Astrology emphasizes elemental balance. Fire alone creates: Burnout (no water to cool), Lack of grounding (no earth to stabilize), Impulsiveness (no air to think), Exhaustion (no rest).

Fire signs need: Water (Cups) for emotional depth and intuition, Earth (Pentacles) for grounding and practical manifestation, Air (Swords) for strategic thinking and clarity.

This is why a chart with all fire (or a reading with all Wands) indicates imbalance—fire needs the other elements to remain sustainable.

Fire Signs and Wands Is Not Metaphor

This is the core insight: Fire signs don't symbolize Wands. Fire signs and Wands calculate the same psychological pattern—the principle of action, willpower, vision, and transformation through challenge. This is the same constant, observed through different lenses: Astrology calls it Fire element (Aries/Leo/Sagittarius), Psychology calls it action-orientation and goal-directed behavior, Neuroscience calls it dopamine reward and prefrontal planning, Tarot calls it Wands. Not symbols. The same psychological constant.

Next: Water Signs and the Cups Suit

We've mapped Fire signs to Wands. Next, we'll calculate Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) and the Cups suit: emotion, intuition, and transformation through feeling. We'll map it next. For those who want to go deeper into the tarot journey itself, I have found that working with a structured practice brings these patterns into daily life—whether through the The 52-Week Tarot Journey for sustained reflection, the 30-Day Tarot Practice Workbook for immersive study of each card, or the Tarot Journaling Prompts to uncover the deeper conversations the cards hold within us.

More Ways to Deepen Your Practice

If you've ever felt like your practice isn't going deep enough —
like your mind stays busy, your body never fully settles, or the space around you feels distracting —
it's often not about discipline.

It's about environment.

The right environment doesn't just support your practice — it becomes part of it.
When space, scent, sound, and intention align, the shift in awareness happens more naturally and more deeply.

Imagine this:
sacred symbols on the walls, soft fabric against your skin, a steady place to sit.
A match is struck. Smoke rises — bergamot, frankincense — something ancient and grounding.
Sound moves quietly in the background, and time begins to slow.

You don't force the state.
You arrive in it.

This is what a ritual feels like when every element is aligned.

If you want to make your practice feel like this, start simple:

You don't need everything.
Just one element can change the entire experience.

The tools that help create this space — and how to use them in your own practice:

Tapestries

Sacred symbols woven into fabric become silent guardians of the space — helping the mind cross the threshold from the ordinary into the sacred. Designed to anchor your ritual environment and hold energetic intention throughout your practice.

Yoga Mats

A dedicated surface signals to body and spirit alike: this is where the work begins. Everything else falls away. Built for comfort and stability, so your body can settle fully while your awareness expands.

Audio Meditations

Let sound do what the mind cannot do alone. In the stillness it creates, intuition finds its voice. Guided sessions crafted to deepen receptivity, clear mental noise, and prepare you for meaningful spiritual work.

Ritual Kits

When the tools are already gathered, the only thing left is intention. Light something. Begin. Thoughtfully assembled sets that bring together everything needed for a complete, intentional ceremony.

Personal Practice Journals

Every reading, every vision, every quiet knowing — written down before the ordinary world reclaims it. Structured to support reflection, pattern recognition, and the long-term deepening of your practice.

Apparel

What you wear into a ritual becomes part of it. Soft, intentional, yours. Designed for ease of movement and energetic comfort, from morning meditation to evening ceremony.

Aromatherapy Candles

A flame changes a room. Let the scent that rises with it mark the beginning of something set apart from the rest of the day. Formulated with sacred botanicals to cleanse energy, anchor intention, and deepen meditative states.

Books

Some knowledge can only be absorbed slowly, over many readings. Let the right book become a companion to your practice. Curated titles spanning mysticism, ritual, and esoteric wisdom — to take your understanding further.
