Frankincense and the Sun: The Resin of Divine Light
Frankincense's planetary and elemental correspondences are among the most unambiguous in the entire magical tradition. Its solar rulership is confirmed by virtually every magical system that has worked with it — from ancient Egyptian temple practice to Western ceremonial magic to modern witchcraft. Frankincense is the Sun's resin, the substance of divine light made tangible, the aromatic bridge between the human and the divine.
Primary Planetary Correspondence: The Sun
Frankincense's planetary ruler is unambiguously the Sun, the great luminary that governs consciousness, divinity, healing, vitality, and the connection between the human and the sacred. Every aspect of frankincense's magical character reflects this solar nature:
- Spiritual elevation — The Sun is the source of light and consciousness; frankincense elevates consciousness toward the solar divine
- Purification through light — The Sun's light dispels all darkness; frankincense purifies by flooding spaces with divine solar light
- Healing and vitality — The Sun governs life force and healing; frankincense's healing properties are quintessentially solar
- Divine connection — The Sun is the visible face of the divine in the physical world; frankincense creates a direct channel to this divine presence

Elemental Correspondence: Fire
Frankincense's primary elemental correspondence is Fire — specifically the highest, most refined expression of Fire: the divine light that is Fire's ultimate nature. Frankincense embodies Fire's qualities of:
- Purification — Fire burns away all impurity; frankincense purifies through the highest expression of this fiery cleansing
- Transformation — Fire transforms; frankincense transforms ordinary space into sacred space, ordinary consciousness into elevated consciousness
- Illumination — Fire illuminates; frankincense illuminates the path between the human and the divine
- Ascent — Fire and smoke rise; frankincense smoke carries prayers and intentions upward to the divine realm
Directional correspondence: South — the direction of Fire and the Sun at its peak.
Secondary Elemental Correspondence: Air
Frankincense's secondary elemental correspondence is Air, reflecting the nature of its primary magical form: smoke. Smoke is the marriage of Fire and Air — it is created by Fire and carried by Air. Frankincense smoke as a vehicle for prayer and intention reflects Air's qualities of communication, transmission, and the carrying of messages between realms.
