Freya Altar: How to Build a Sacred Space for Love, War, Magic, and the Dead

Freya is the most powerful goddess of the Norse pantheon and one of the most complex divine feminine figures in any tradition: she is simultaneously the goddess of love and desire, the goddess of war and death, the mistress of the most potent form of Norse magic (seiðr), and the one who receives half of all warriors slain in battle into her hall Sessrúmnir in Fólkvangr, before Odin receives the other half into Valhalla. This combination — love, death, magic, war — which to modern sensibility seems contradictory is to the Norse understanding a natural unity: all of these domains involve the most extreme intensities of human experience, the places where ordinary life gives way to something larger, more raw, and more real.
Freya travels in a chariot drawn by two cats; her cloak is made of falcon feathers that allow her to fly between worlds; her necklace Brísingamen is the most beautiful jewel in existence, won through four nights of union with the dwarves who made it, at a cost that caused the other gods to judge her and that she paid without apology, because beauty and desire and the willingness to pay their price are among the things she will not compromise. She weeps tears of red gold when she mourns — and she mourns for Óðr, her wandering husband, whose absence she is always searching to end. She is at once fiercely sovereign and genuinely vulnerable; completely powerful and genuinely subject to love. She is, in this way, one of the most fully human of the goddesses.
When to Build a Freya Altar
Call on Freya when you need the strength that comes from genuine feminine sovereignty: the capacity to hold power without apology, to desire without shame, to love fiercely without losing the self that loves. When magical work — especially seiðr-style visionary or divinatory work —oo needs her protection and teaching. When grief over a genuine love loss needs the presence of the goddess who knows what it is to weep gold tears for the one who wanders. When courage is needed for a battle — literal or metaphorical. When the warrior energy of the divine feminine is the specific quality the moment requires.
Altar Elements
Colors: Gold, red, and forest green. The gold of Freya's tears, the red of battle and desire, the green of the Norse landscape.
Crystals: Amber — the fossilized golden resin that resonates with Freya's gold tears and has been sacred in the Norse tradition since the Bronze Age. Carnelian for the fierce life force and the passionate nature of Freya's love and war domains. Rose quartz for the heart that loves completely. Clear quartz for the clarity of the seiðr vision.
Candle: Gold or red. Both can burn simultaneously.
Offerings: Mead — the sacred drink of the Norse tradition. Amber jewelry or amber resin. Red berries. Apples (sacred in the Norse tradition). Cat imagery or a small cat figure — Freya's sacred animals. Flowers, especially those with a wild, forest quality. Furs or any natural animal material (ethically sourced).
