Gematria & Hebrew Letter Mysticism: Numerical Kabbalah

Introduction to Gematria
Gematria is the Kabbalistic practice of calculating the numerical value of Hebrew words and finding connections between words with equal or related values. Based on the principle that Hebrew letters are not just sounds but numbers and cosmic forces, gematria reveals hidden relationships, deeper meanings, and mystical connections within sacred texts. This ancient system of numerical mysticism provides a key to unlocking the secrets encoded in the Torah and understanding the mathematical structure of creation itself.
This comprehensive guide explores gematria methods, Hebrew letter values, significant calculations, and how to apply numerical Kabbalah in spiritual practice.
The Hebrew Alphabet as Numbers
The 22 Letters and Their Values
Each Hebrew letter has a numerical value:

| ב | Beth | 2 | House |
| ג | Gimel | 3 | Camel |
| ד | Daleth | 4 | Door |
| ה | Heh | 5 | Window |
| ו | Vav | 6 | Nail, hook |
| ז | Zain | 7 | Sword |

| י | Yod | 10 | Hand |
| כ/ך | Kaph | 20/500 | Palm |
| ל | Lamed | 30 | Ox goad |
| מ/ם | Mem | 40/600 | Water |
| נ/ן | Nun | 50/700 | Fish |
| ס | Samekh | 60 | Prop |
| ע | Ayin | 70 | Eye |
| פ/ף | Peh | 80/800 | Mouth |
| צ/ץ | Tzaddi | 90/900 | Fish hook |
| ק | Qoph | 100 | Back of head |
| ר | Resh | 200 | Head |
| ש | Shin | 300 | Tooth |
| ת | Tau | 400 | Cross, mark |
Final Forms
Five letters have special final forms (when appearing at the end of a word) with higher values: Kaph (500), Mem (600), Nun (700), Peh (800), Tzaddi (900).
Methods of Gematria
1. Standard Gematria (Mispar Hechrachi)
The basic method: add up the numerical values of all letters in a word.
Example: AHBH (אהבה) - Love
א (1) + ה (5) + ב (2) + ה (5) = 13
Example: ACHD (אחד) - One/Unity
א (1) + ח (8) + ד (4) = 13
Meaning: Love (AHBH) and Unity (ACHD) both equal 13, revealing that love and oneness are mystically connected.
2. Small Number (Mispar Katan)
Reduce all numbers to single digits (1-9).
Example: 10 = 1+0 = 1, 20 = 2+0 = 2, etc.
3. Ordinal Value (Mispar Siduri)
Use the position of the letter in the alphabet (Aleph=1, Beth=2... Tau=22).
4. Squared Gematria (Mispar Kidmi)
Square each letter's value before adding.
5. Full Spelling (Milui)
Spell out the name of each letter and calculate the value of the spelled-out names.
Example: Aleph (אלף)
א (1) + ל (30) + פ (80) = 111
Famous Gematria Examples
The Shema
Shema Yisrael (שמע ישראל) - 'Hear, O Israel'
The final letters of Shema (ע) and Yisrael (ל) spell ED (עד) = 'witness' (70+4=74)
YHVH and Adonai
YHVH (יהוה) - The Tetragrammaton
י (10) + ה (5) + ו (6) + ה (5) = 26
Adonai (אדני) - Lord
א (1) + ד (4) + נ (50) + י (10) = 65
YHVH + Adonai = 26 + 65 = 91
This equals AMN (אמן) - 'Amen' (1+40+50=91)
Echad (One) = Ahavah (Love)
ACHD (אחד) - One = 13
AHBH (אהבה) - Love = 13
This reveals the mystical truth: God is One, and God is Love.
Chai (Life)
ChI (חי) - Life
ח (8) + י (10) = 18
This is why 18 is a lucky number in Jewish tradition and why gifts are often given in multiples of 18.
The Number 26
YHVH = 26, which is also:
- The number of generations from Adam to Moses
- The gematria of the Tetragrammaton
- 2+6 = 8 (infinity, new beginning)
666 and the Beast
In Hebrew gematria, various interpretations exist for Revelation's 'number of the beast,' including connections to Roman emperors' names.
The Three Mother Letters
Aleph, Mem, Shin (אמש)
The Sefer Yetzirah identifies three 'mother letters':
- Aleph (א): Air, balance, the middle path
- Mem (מ): Water, cold, passive principle
- Shin (ש): Fire, heat, active principle
Together they spell EMESH (אמש) = 'yesterday' or 'truth,' and contain the three elements from which all creation emerges.
The Seven Double Letters
Seven letters have two pronunciations (hard and soft): Beth, Gimel, Daleth, Kaph, Peh, Resh, Tau (בגדכפרת).
These correspond to:
- The seven planets
- The seven days of creation
- The seven openings in the head
- Pairs of opposites (life/death, wisdom/folly, etc.)
The Twelve Simple Letters
The remaining twelve letters correspond to:
- The twelve zodiac signs
- The twelve months
- The twelve tribes of Israel
- Twelve human faculties
Practical Applications
Biblical Interpretation
Gematria reveals hidden meanings in scripture:
- Words with equal values are mystically connected
- Numerical patterns reveal divine design
- Hidden names and concepts are encoded
Name Analysis
Calculate the gematria of names to understand their essence and destiny.
Magical Practice
Use gematria to:
- Create sigils and talismans
- Choose auspicious numbers
- Understand divine names
- Construct magical formulas
Meditation
Contemplate words of equal value to understand their mystical unity.
Warnings and Cautions
Avoid Over-Interpretation
- Not every numerical correspondence is meaningful
- Context and tradition matter
- Gematria supplements, not replaces, traditional interpretation
Multiple Methods
- Different gematria methods yield different results
- Choose the method appropriate to your question
- Traditional Jewish practice is conservative in gematria use
The Mystical Significance
Letters as Creative Forces
In Kabbalah, Hebrew letters are not mere symbols but the actual forces through which God created the universe. Gematria reveals the mathematical structure underlying creation.
The Language of Creation
Hebrew is considered the 'language of creation'—the language God used to speak the world into being. Gematria unlocks the numerical code of this divine language.
