Hagalaz Rune Meditation: Working with Disruption & Transformative Change

Hagalaz Rune Meditation: Working with Disruption & Transformative Change

By Nicole Lau

Hagalaz (ᚺ) is the rune of hail — of the sudden, disruptive force that falls from the sky without warning and transforms everything it touches. To meditate with Hagalaz is to work consciously with disruption: to find the pattern within the chaos, the gift within the crisis, the new growth that becomes possible only after the hailstorm has cleared away what was stagnant. This is not a comfortable meditation. Hagalaz asks you to face what is being disrupted in your life and to find, within that disruption, the seeds of transformation.

This meditation is particularly powerful for: working consciously with a crisis or unexpected disruption, releasing patterns or situations that have been resistant to gentler approaches, finding the transformative gift within a painful experience, breaking through long-standing stagnation, and developing the resilience to work with change rather than against it.

Before You Begin

Light a grey or black candle. Place a small bowl of cold water before you — Hagalaz's sacred element, the substance that hail becomes when its disruptive work is done. If you are working with a specific disruption or crisis in your life, write it on a small piece of paper and place it beside the bowl. Sit upright and alert — Hagalaz does not work in a state of relaxed passivity. This meditation requires your full, clear-eyed presence.

Take three sharp, clarifying breaths — inhale fully, exhale completely, releasing any tendency to soften or avoid what needs to be faced. You are entering Hagalaz's territory: the honest, unsparing clarity of the storm.

Part One: The Hailstorm

Close your eyes. In your mind's eye, find yourself standing in an open field under a darkening sky. The air has the electric quality of an approaching storm — that particular stillness before the weather breaks, when everything seems to hold its breath.

The storm breaks. Hail falls — sudden, hard, relentless. Feel it striking the ground around you, hear the sharp percussion of ice on earth. This is Hagalaz: impersonal, powerful, indifferent to your preferences or plans. The hail does not fall because you deserve it; it falls because this is what storms do.

Now bring to mind the disruption in your life — the crisis, the unexpected change, the thing that has been broken or ended or forced open. See it as part of this hailstorm: not a punishment, not a mistake, but a force of nature doing what forces of nature do. Can you find, even briefly, a quality of acceptance? Not resignation — acceptance. This is happening. This is real. This is Hagalaz.

Part Two: The Pattern in the Storm

As the hailstorm continues, look more carefully at the hailstones. Each one is not random — each one is a perfect crystal, a precise geometric form. The chaos of the storm contains, within each individual hailstone, a perfect pattern.

This is Hagalaz's deeper teaching: disruption is not random. It follows the pattern of wyrd — of the deep fate that the Norns weave, that operates according to a logic larger than individual human understanding. The disruption in your life is not meaningless chaos; it is the expression of a pattern that you may not yet be able to see fully.

Ask Hagalaz: "What pattern is this disruption expressing? What is being cleared away, and why? What can only grow in the space that this storm is creating?" Do not force an answer. Simply hold the question in the storm and let the hailstones carry whatever wisdom they carry.

Part Three: The Melting

The storm passes. The hail stops. And now — the hailstones begin to melt. Watch them dissolve into water, soaking into the earth, becoming the nourishment that the disruption was always carrying within it. The field that was struck by hail is now watered. The ground that was hard is now soft and receptive. What was destroyed has become the medium for new growth.

Feel this melting in your own body. Where have you been holding the tension of the disruption — the resistance, the grief, the anger, the fear? Let it begin to melt, like hail becoming water. Not disappearing — transforming. The energy of the disruption does not go away; it changes form, from the hard impact of hail to the soft nourishment of water.

What new growth is possible in the space that this disruption has created? What could not have grown in the old, pre-storm landscape that can now grow in this newly watered, newly opened ground? Let images, feelings, or knowings arise — the seeds of what comes next.

Part Four: The Hagalaz Galdr

With the storm passed and the melting complete, begin the Galdr. Take a sharp inhale. On the exhale, chant: "Haaaa-ga-laz" — sharp and percussive at the start, then opening into resonance. The “Ha” should be forceful, like the first hailstone striking; the “ga-laz” should open and sustain, like the storm moving through and past.

Chant nine times. With each repetition, feel the transformative energy of Hagalaz moving through you — breaking up what is frozen, clearing what is stagnant, opening what has been closed. By the ninth chant, you may feel a quality of clarity and spaciousness — the feeling of the air after a storm has passed.

Part Five: The Gift of the Storm

After the Galdr, sit in the post-storm stillness. The air is clear. The ground is watered. Something has been cleared away; something new is possible. Ask Hagalaz one final question: "What is the gift of this disruption?"

The gift may not be immediately apparent. Hagalaz's gifts often take time to reveal themselves — the new growth that becomes possible after the storm does not appear overnight. But the seed of the gift is always present in the disruption itself. Trust what arises, even if it is only a faint sense of possibility rather than a clear vision.

Part Six: Closing

Touch the bowl of water before you — feel its coolness, its fluidity, its capacity to nourish. This is what Hagalaz becomes: the disruption that transforms into sustenance. Take three grounding breaths. Open your eyes.

If you wrote the disruption on a piece of paper before the meditation, burn it now — a physical act of releasing the old form so the new can emerge. Then drink a small amount of the water from the bowl, integrating Hagalaz's transformative energy into your body.

Hagalaz Meditation for Specific Situations

During active crisis: A brief Hagalaz meditation — just Parts One and Three — during an active crisis helps shift your relationship to the disruption from resistance to conscious engagement. You cannot stop the hailstorm, but you can choose how you stand in it.

For releasing stubborn patterns: If a pattern has been resistant to gentler approaches, perform the full Hagalaz meditation with that specific pattern held in mind during Part One. Hagalaz's energy is one of the most powerful pattern-breakers in the runic system.

After a significant loss or ending: Hagalaz meditation helps process the grief of endings by placing them in the larger context of transformation — by finding the water within the hail, the nourishment within the disruption.

Deepen your Hagalaz meditation with the Elder Futhark Meditation: 24 Runes Journey Audio — a complete guided journey through all 24 runes that places Hagalaz's disruption in its full runic context, showing how it relates to the runes that follow it in Hagal's Ætt. For the shamanic dimension of Norse transformation work, Seidr Trance: Norse Shamanic Journey Audio guides you into the deep trance states where Hagalaz's transformative power operates at its most fundamental level. When working with runes that break patterns and clear stagnation, I find that having a dedicated space for these practices makes all the difference — the Sacred Space Cleanse helps prepare the energetic field for the kind of deep clearing Hagalaz demands, while the Void Whisper Audio allows the subconscious to drift into the receptive stillness that follows the storm. For those whose disruptions carry a karmic or relationship undertone, the Emotional Filter Ritual Kit offers a way to sift through the emotional debris the hail leaves behind. I also keep the Void of Course Moon Audio close for the necessary pause between destruction and new growth, and the Jung and the Archetype exploration deepens the understanding of the archetypal patterns Hagalaz reveals.

The Way to Deepen Your Practice: 6 Grounded Anchors

When a practice feels restless or distracted, it is rarely a lack of discipline. More often, your nervous system is simply waiting for a physical cue that it is safe to arrive.

Insight remains abstract until it touches your physical world. Reflecting As Above, So Below, a sacred practice begins wherever you set an intentional boundary—draping a woven cloth where noise stops, attuning to an acoustic frequency, or taking up raw materials to forge an implement with your own hands.

You do not need an entire sanctuary built at once. A single deliberate anchor is enough to call you back home to yourself.
